orienteering 45:00 [2]

I planned to take a day off running and ride my MTB, but when Mary mentioned Rockcrusher, I changed my mind. I designed a little corridor course for Mary and decided it looked about right. So, I shuffled around the corridor. I took it easy - my left calf felt mostly normal today and my right Achilles is still a little sore. The Archilles is just annoying. It isn't a tendon injury, just a spot that got scraped by a thorny branch a few days ago. The skin is irritated (even once I pulled the thorrn) and it rubs on the shoe when I go downhill.

The course was fun, but I went through some junky forest.

Around 8, I stepped on a thorn that went through the sole of my shoe and into my foot. It only went a little bit into my foot and I was able to remove the shoe and then pull the thorn out of the sole of the shoe.

Warm out there - warm enough that it was comfortable standing around and waiting for Mary to finish in short sleeves.

running 1:15:00 [2]

Jogging around on trails at Skyline Park/Burnett Mound in Topeka. This is the area Shawnee County Parks wants to use for a permanent orienteering course. The trail network is nice - around 5 miles squeezed in a small area. The forest is thick - like dark green for all of the forest. The open areas are rough open with vertical green (so also thick).

I guess it'll be ok as a place to have a simple permanent course. We can use the trail marker signs as control locations. I think that'll work.

Mary remarked on how good the karttapullautin map was. It really is good. I think the combination of recent data and higher density of points helped.

My right Achilles felt uncomfortable I got a thorn right on top of the tendon yesterday. I could remove the thorn, but there's still some irritation and it rubs on the shoe occasionally. Also, my left calf was tight. No idea where that came from.

Including checking the 4 points that I put out for practice a few weeks ago. I was glad to see that the markers were all still in place. All 4 are very visible to trail users, so I wasn't sure if they'd still be there. I'm not sure anyone has used the the course. Hopefully, the course will get some use before I got out and take down the controls.

Trails at Rockhaven, including 2 x HU/HE/ML.

Nice day to be out at Rockhaven. I saw more deer than usual (including a dead buck next to a trail). I only saw 2 horse riders.

I ran in my new shoes. They felt ok, but it probably would have been easier to run the trails around Rockhaven in orienteering shoes instead of trail shoes.

Work commute. Some wet roads, but I managed to avoid any rain.

running 20:00 [2]

Easy headlamp run on West Campus. My legs still feel a bit tired from Sunday.

I got some new shoes today. A short, easy jog was good for a first run in the new shoes.

Work commute. My legs were tired, but felt better as the day went on. My left foot is a bit sore. I twisted the foot near the 5th control yesterday. It is a little swollen and sore, but nothing too bad.

I might just take another rest day tomorrow.

Possum Trot at Longview.

Mostly satisfied with my run. I lost a little bit at a few controls and probably should have skipped 21 instead of 22.

At the mass start I managed to pick my route to the first control quickly and lead the race (briefly). I think I've spent at least a few steps in the lead of most, if not all, of the Possum Trots (including when I walked the entire course with my bum leg).

I finished 3rd, but really I should have been 4th. Tom Carr skipped 2 consecutive controls when the rule was to skip any 2 non-consecutive. If he'd have done that, I'm sure he'd have been ahead of me.

Joe Barrett was at the race and finished a couple of minutes behind me. I saw him out in the forest a few times, but didn't recognize it was Joe. He's studying at OU and I haven't seen him in several years.

The terrain was not very pleasant. Longview has gotten rougher than it was just a few years ago. Some of the fields that used to be reasonable are now deep vegetation mixed with thorns. The woods are a bit thicker, too. All in all, a great Possum Trot venue, but not really a very pleasant place to orienteer.

The weekend seemed to be a success. We had a decent turnout both Saturday and Sunday. It is always fun to have Tom and Lisa visiting. The Trot also drew a good crowd from MNOC and a few from SLOC and Sharon from RMOC.

We had two from NW Arkansas. Ted Holland, who I'd never met but had done a bunch of orienteering in OCIN and is now working at the University of Arkansas. I think that part of Arkansas could be an interesting area for O' to develop. Maybe with Tom H. and Ted H. we are getting closer to a NW Arkansas orienteering group becoming viable.
