MTB cycling 2:00:00 [1]

MTB on trails north of Moab. We (Mary, BIL William, nephew Nick, and I) signed up for a tour with one of the biking shops in Moab. Two leaders and four other customers were also on the tour. It worked out really well and was a blast.

The rental bike I had was a Specialized Stumpjumper full suspension 29er. I'd never been on a full suspension bike before. I like it. I was able to ride things that would have been very difficult for me on a hardtail (maybe impossible). The full suspension also seemed to reduce the stress on the body more than I'd have guessed.

This was Mary's first MTB ride. It was really fun to see how get better and better (and have more and more fun) as she learned. The leaders were really good at showing and telling us how to handle various difficult spots.

This is one of those experiences that I'll remember for a long time.

running 15:00 [2]

In addition to a good bit of hiking around at Arches National Park, I ran a bit - basically from Delicate Arch back down to the parking area. I had a map that I'd made (USGS contours + OSM trails, roads and washes). Super fun.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

Easy MTB riding with Mary for the first 15 minutes. Then exploring a bit on my own.

I had my July mapping project on my map board and made a few notes. The first version of the map is done. That's pretty quick compoared to the June map.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Jogging easily. Temp was even cooler than yesterday. Amazing for July.

4 x short courses on the Spooner Hall map.

I started one course and turned my ankle within about a minute. I stopped, rested a while, tested standing on one foot to see if my ankle was ok, decided it was, and then ran all four course. The ankle felt a little sore but by the end of the first course I wasn't noticing it.

The courses were fun. I worked on having a clear path all the way to each control. This is an area where you had to be careful with route choices because there are a lot of uncrossable walls. The map is a little hard to read in spots, partially because of my eyesight and my magnifier fogging. But also I can make a few tweaks to the drafting to make things a bit clearer.

This is also the sort of terrain where you have to think about running because there are a lot of stairways. It'd be easy to fall down a set of stairs if you were trying to read the map. It'd also be a lot harder to run here during the school year when you had people and cars around.
