orienteering 15:00 [2] ***
23c

A short sprint course that Mary designed for me last night (after drinking a gin and tonic). It was a lot of fun and with so many controls there was a lot of map reading, even if the legs were simple. My mind was working well and aside from one leg where I spent a few seconds running in the right direction without actually looking for something, I was orienteering well.

The course was at JCCC. I ran there because I spent the day at the KU Edwards campus as a guest lecturer for a KU course in peerformance audit. Except that it doesn't feel like a weekend, the class is fun and we're doing a much better job of teaching it than we did two years ago. The class is taught by 4 of us: a KU public administration prof, the director of internal audit at KU, the state auditor and me.

A short night sprint course at West Campus. I had my little Petzl lamp so I could read the map. Fun. Sometimes it is amazing how an area that I not only mapped (though Ulrik made the latest map) but also have run on many times, can still feel like real orienteering. Its also fun to remember that West Campus was the first place I ever orienteered.

Also, this seems to be interesting:

running 45:00 [2]

A mostly headlamp run with kartlek at Clinton State Park.

It is fun to see how 31 days in a row changes how I see things and look at the map. It won't last long, but it is interesting.

Note

No running or biking, but I walked to/from work. That's 2 hours of walking. That's enough to feel like I trained.

Work commute. First day of 2016 without any orienteering technique training.

Note

Orienteering technique training for 31 days in a row.

That's the 4th time I did the 31 day challenge and the second time I finished without any off days. It is actually pretty difficult to make it work without any breaks. I think one year I turned an ankle and one year I got sick. This year I managed to stay healthy enough and didn't have any injuries. The mild weather this year helped.

orienteering 50:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (25:00 @4) ***

Five short courses as intervals, with easy jogging between. During the easy jogging (and occasionally stopping) I looked at the map and checked out some things for future fieldchecking.

running 25:00 [2]

Some of the time I was just mindlessly jogging. This was that time.
