A training course at Rockcrusher.

Before we left Mary asked if I thought it'd be wet. I said "no" because I figured it was cold enough that everything would be frozen. I didn't really think about the fact that it was cold, but it hadn't been cold for very long. So, it was wet.

The course was ok but I went through some really junky stuff. Some of that was a choice to run in junky stuff when I'd have run a different route if it were a race.

I did a night sprint course on the Burcham Park map. I didn't go to all of the controls becuase doing so would have required a bit of more-than-ankle-deep water and mud.

I also ran the new paved bike path. I'll add use the GPS track to update OSM.

I used my little Petzl headlamp. It is pretty good, but I think the batteries are a bit old and the light wasn't very bright. It was hard to read detail with the dim light.

Note

A work in progress. Karttapullautin and OSM to create a 1:10000 map of downtown.

running 15:00 [2]

A bit of a warm up and then running home.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

A night sprint line O' course on West Campus.

The biggest challenge was that a couple of minutes after I left the house the rain picked up. With temps around 40F and rain, my glasses fogged up a few times. It was kind of fun to try to figure out how best to deal with foggy glasses - a mix of strategic stops to lift up the glasses and take a very close look at the map and navigating by ignoring the details and just trying to use the buildings (which I could see pretty well despite the foggy glasses). I also had a couple of near falls when I couldn't really see what I was running on.

A short night O' course at the Clinton Overlook. The trails were either slippery from ice or soft and muddy. The forest was thick and crappy. I had one leg where I started following deer trails to avoid some crappy forest when I should have just held my line.

Short, downhill, control picking night sprint orienteering training on West Campus. I started by the north east corner of the cemetery and ran a course that took me towards home.

There were a couple of slick spots.

Fun.

running 15:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up a bit and then to get home.

orienteering 16:53 [2] 1.37 mi (12:19 / mi)

I drew a line O' course on a flat and mostly featureless section of the West Campus sprint map and then ran it at an easy pace.

I'll download the GPS track tomorrow to see how well I followed the line.

UPDATE: check out the track. It looks like I did a pretty good job of following the line.

My cold is not really getting worse, but not really getting better either. If I wasn't working on my 30 day challenge, I'd have taken today off. Instead, I just did a little bit.

A short training course that Mary designed for me at Clinton State Park. Fun.

I felt pretty good despite having a light cold. I was moving slowly but steadily until the last climb when I walked a bunch.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Some easy jogging, mainly on trails, after the orienteering.

I tested some bluetooth headphones and listened to 1.5 podcasts from Radio Oringen. Good stuff. I listened to the full Martin Johansson podcast and the first bit of Helena Jansson. I thought it was interesting that Helena J has done a lot of technique training at a walk (and if I remember right she said both Peter Oberg and David Andersson have done a lot of that, too).

I ended up being out and moving for over 90 minutes and climbing over 200 meters. That's good.
