orienteering 42:00 [2] ***
24c

PTOC night orienteering at Hodge Park.

My plan was to jog for up to 30 minutes. But at about 25 minutes, I realized I could probably clear the course and finish around 40 minutes. So, I changed my plan to jog for 30 minutes and then alternate jogging 100m/walking 100m until I was done.

I don't think I made my cold any worse.

I like the event - it made good use of the terrain and was a lot of fun.

I had two mistakes. On one leg I was reading the map for control 19-13 when I was actually running from 21. The leg is basically the same either way (along a trail a bit and then bump into the control). But I was surprised when I bumped into 19 instead of 13. It didn't actually cost me any time, but it doesn't feel good to be surprised by a control.

The other error was a brief lapse in concentration and then some confusion about a trail bend.

Work commute.

A slight setback on the cold. I had been feeling better and better everyday, but today I don't feel any better than yesterday.

Work commute.

I've been taking it easy all week. Sunday night my throat got sore and I felt a 7-10 day cold coming on. But, I seem to have fought it off by resting a lot and sucking on lots of zinc tablets. I'm not 100 percent, but I don't seem to have the cold that I feared.

Note

I read this on AP:

JWOC is a set of races under pressure. That is what is being tested. Not only performing the skill of orienteering, but performing it under pressure. Therefore, the qualification process should test the same. It should not be a test of who can blog the best, petition the best, or race the best in non pressure situations, but actually race the best under pressure.

I think almost everyone disagrees with me about this, but I think that it is unnecessary and actually not beneficial to view JWOC (or WOC for that matter) as races under pressure. It is better to view those races as "no different from a local race."

If you tell people something is pressure packed, you stress them. If you tell them that it isn't actually different than a local race, you can help them develop the tools to come to a race calm and prepared.

The way to get people to perform best when it matters is to help them learn that "when it matters" isn't actually different than when it doesn't matter.

That's just my way of viewing the world. I think most people disagree with me.

Note

I woke up in the middle of the night Saturday night with a bit of scratchy throat. It got worse yesterday. It got a little better today. I'm going to give it some rest and take things very easy and hope this little illness goes by quickly.
