running 30:00 [2]

Giving my self some time to represent running around to put out and pick up some controls.
10 AM

orienteering race 16:54 [4] *** 3.29 km (5:09 / km)
8c

I ran Gene's short course at Fort Leavenworth after running the start. I started wtihout any actual warm up and just tried to gradually raise the pace to a near-race effort.

This is the second year that we've co-hosted an event with Fort Leavenworth Adventures. It seemed like a good success. A good turnout (~30 starts) with lots of those starts being family groups with kids.

The map is an "adventure race" map that I made for Ft. Lev Adventures. That means it is better than a USGS but not a true orienteering map.

Gene got the difficulty level just right (thanks also to Mary's testing of the course a week or two before the event).

The VCC process was a little different than last time, but not much different and generally quick. Marv didn't have as much luck and had a longish wait to get through.

Lessons for next time:

1. Difficulty was just right.
2. Tell people to wear long pants and/or high socks if they do the long course that goes into the terrain.
3. Bring a headlamp for putting out controls (it is dark at 7 a.m.).

Work commute. Another warm day, but it felt like rain might be coming and I'm hoping the temp will drop a bit.

running 1:05:00 intensity: (40:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) + (15:00 @4)

Wednesday night hills with the Trailhawks. I did a bit on my own before joining the group.

I did 4 x the hill loop. It is really an out-and-back but I think I'll call it a loop.

I ran with my headlamp and needed it for the last couple of loops.

I felt pretty good (the first two loops were at a more reasonable effort for me).

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was kind of hot out there today. Hot is not good.

I thought about a jog after work, but ended up sitting in front of the TV and watching the Royal's game. It was kind of crazy.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Easy run with several stops to look at things or wait for horse riders to pass. I was actually out for 1:50, but I'll call it 1:30 of a run.

I went to the Rockcrusher area on the south side of Clinton for the first time this season. The trails were overgrown (but not so bad as you went further west). I wore O' pants and that was a very good choice. Shorts would have left me torn up.

I thought I had the karttapullautin map with me. I was confused because I started seeing things in the terrain - like form lines and cliffs - that KP would normally pick up. After a while, I realized I had KP contours (without form lines) and KP vegetation image. So, no form lines and no cliffs on the map.

I didn't see any runners or hikers or bow hunters. I did see a couple of groups of horse riders.

I also saw an interesting bird. My first thought was Osprey? But, I didn't get a great look at it. Then I remembered I had my phone with a bird app that'd probably have audio of an Osprey. I didn't see the bird closely, but I heard it's alarm call. Sure enough the app had an Osprey warning call and no doubt about it, the bird was an Osprey.

Also, at the end of the run I opened the Clif pizza flavored gu. It is actually worse than it sounds.
