cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute and nothing more. It was hot out.

I saw lots of OKers today. I saw Dee biking to work. I saw Blair, who was hanging out at Wheatfields while I was biking to work. And I saw Gene at lunch.

Note

I've read some of the discussion about the S.D. rogaine. It reminded me of when I decided not to go to the event. There was a discussion about the qualifying requirements. I didn't know there was such a thing, but I read through the thread. Up until that point, I'd be thinking it might be fun to try the S.D. event. I'd been thinking about possible partners.

After reading the thread, I thought, it really sounds like the event doesn't want me, and if it does, like the people attending don't want me. So, I just gave up on the idea. I was fairly sure that the event wouldn't fill up and that it would be possible to enter even if I didn't meet the qualifying requirements. But, the idea of going to an event where it seemed like I wouldn't be welcome wasn't appealing.

I'd probably feel the same way about orienteering if I didn't know that I already liked the sport and instead read some discussions to see what it was like.

This interview with Thierry Gueorgiou is worth a listen:

MTB Orienteering 1:00:00 [1]

MTB on the river trail with the map. I stopped often to mark potential control locations. I have the beginning of a plan to host a fall MTBO series on the river trails. It isn't very challenging, but I'm hoping to aim at new recruits and figure the advantages of the river trails outweigh the disadvantages.

Also, I met one guy riding the wrong way. I stopped and explained the system to him and told him to move to the other trail. A good reminder that when students come back to town it doesn't just mean scary driving on streets, it also means scary riding on the trails.

I did some fieldchecking on the Water Tower Park map. I'm getting more and more comfortable with OOM on the Kindle as a way of taking field notes.

I used the course from the MTBO that we did last summer on West Campus. I did two laps - first getting the odd controls and then the even controls. It made the course less interesting, but meant that I had to read the map instead of just remember the legs. I pushed the effort a bit.
