Jogging to/from the start and finish on the west campus map.

I ran the course that Mary did on Wednesday. It was a course I'd designed that used four maps that she'd taped together to create one big sprint map (West Campus, Daisy Hill, Robinson Gym and Mount Oread). Fun. The orienteering was pretty simple.

As I was crossing the bridge over Iowa I thought I spotted Mean Gene at the Lied parking lot. Checking his log for today leads me to believe it was him.

cycling 55:00 [1] 13.47 km (4:05 / km)

Mountain biking on the river trails. I felt like doing something outdoors and figured mountain biking in the woods would be bearable in the heat of the day. It wasn't too bad. The shade helps a lot. It is also nice to have a camelbak full of ice cold water.

I hadn't been on a mtb in a long time. I felt like a complete klutz the first 15-30 minutes. Glad I didn't crash. After the turn around, I started feeling a bit more comfortable on the bike and trails.

I stopped at the far end to take a look at the river (as per tradition).

cycling 55:00 [1]

Work commute including a bit extra to work on my project a bit.

I climbed the 14th Street hill after work. The heat off the pavement (not to mention the 100+ F heat) was uncomfortable.

running 1:00:00 [2]

I figured I'd wake up by 6:30 and get out the door and on the trail by about 7:30. Instead, I didn't even wake up until almost 8. That meant I got started a little later than planned and the temps were a bit hotter than I'd hoped for. I shuffled around on the trails from the overlook for a bit over an hour.

I met a former Mayor who was out for a hike. That was a surprise.

cycling 1:10:00 [1]

Work commute including some work on my biking project on the way home. I added a few streets in OWL and then got some hilly stuff around campus. I was a bit overheated when I got home. A popsicle helped!

Here's a bit of iPhone video from yesterday's bike racing spectating:

Trail run at Clinton overlook before it got too hot. I felt blah. I walked a bunch, cut the planned run short, and stopped early. Oh well, one of those days.

Note

Chest mount GoPro + GPS track + QR map from yesterday's local sprint orienteering race.

I used two YouTube features to improve the video a bit. I stabilized it and increased the saturation.

I kind of like the chest mount. It looks a little weird to see the map in the view, but weird isn't bad.

I make a strange little hesitation just before I took the first control. I don't really know what was up.

Note

And something interesting I just learned....one of our local course setters/mappers shared a headcam video I'd shot of a local race with the park facility manager. The manager really liked the video and the course setter notes, "it was very easy to get permission" for the next event there.
