orienteering race 2:57:00 [3] ***

PTOC 3-hour score O' at Lake Jacomo.

I felt ok at the start. Matt B. was going at a pace that I didn't think I could keep up (I didn't know that he was only going to be out for an hour).

At the 90 minute point I was on track and figured I'd get all of the controls. But then at about 2:10-2:15, I slowed down a lot. Actually, I think I slowed down at about 1:55, but didn't really notice how much until 2:15.

The last 40 minutes or so was rough. I walked a lot and felt worn out. In the end, I skipped two controls (both high point controls).

I had two gels and some sport drink. I thought that'd be enough. The weather was warm (probably mid 70s) and sunny, but not too hot. I'm not in shape to run for 3 hours, but I thought I was in shape to move steadily for three hours. Maybe if it had been cooler.

Afterwards, I felt bad. I started to change and felt worse. I just sat in the car, trying to rest. It seemed like things were getting worse (i.e. feeling cruddy and sweating even though I wasn't moving) for about 30 minutes. Then I began to feel not-too-terrible. A Coke on the way home helped.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The students will be back next week. It takes about a day to get used to the town without the students, but it takes a month to get used to them being back.

Another rainy work commute.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging around on west campus - a bit muddy. The rain fell throughout the run, but it was light.

I enjoyed the run, but I barely got myself out the door.

Met Nadim and Mary at SMP after work. Nadim and I jogged around in the terrain looking at some of the areas of the map that I'd looked at before. I wanted to get another set of eyes on some of the areas and see what Nadim thought.

It was raining and cool, but not cold.

Since we'd have a bunch of rain throughout the day, I thought it'd be worth taking a look at the little waterfall I visited yesterday. Here's the waterfall with more water and Nadim for scale:

Checking stuff at SMP. I kept the pace low, but I was still pretty tired after 90 minutes. It was warm, but when the sun was behind clouds it wasn't too terrible.

I discovered some blazed horse trails. At this point, they aren't mappable, but if the horses start using them, we'll need to map the trails.

The controls were feature Paul C. asked me to check out.

I did a fair bit of climbing and spent a fair amount of time in the forest rather than in clearings or on trails. Maybe that's why I got so tired? The leaves are starting to come out, the ticks are active, and we won't have many more chances to enjoy running in the forest for the next 6 months or so.

I came across a nice little waterfall that I'd never seen before:
