On the Rockcrusher map (about half way between the dam and Rockhaven). I'd drawn a course to check out some of the OL Laser-generated cliffs.

running 15:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

Some mindless running. I put in ten at an honest effort to get back to the car in time to get home, get a shower, and drive over to Dad's house to watch the KU basketball game.

I was in a hurry after stopping to chat with a guy in the forest. He was scouting out areas for next season's bow hunting and wondered what I was doing. I showed him the map and explained what I was doing, talked about orienteering a bit. He was interested enough that I gave him the OK web page address and he pulled out his Blackberry and made a note about the date of the next local event.

Today's orienteering training was fairly bogus.

I had to take a look at some houses as part of an audit project (rental houses owned by a landlord who hasn't registered the properties as required by the City Code). A number of the properties were in east Lawrence. I printed a Google map of the area, drew a course to connect the 6 properties, and biked through the resulting course.

This was bogus enough that I'll only give it one point. But, it was legit enough that I'll count it toward the 31 day challenge.

Work commute. It was cold this morning. The temp was 8F when I left. Fortunately the wind was gentle.

Note

Some interesting stuff in the Annika Billstam interview linked from Samantha's log today:

running 30:00 [2]

Easy headlamp jogging on west campus. I'd planned to get out a bit earlier, but spent time playing around with the lidar/laser scan data I got from Johnson County. They use one square mile tiles rather than the one square kilometer tiles that I'm used to. The big files are a chore for my PC to deal with.

I did a short (6 minute) mini-sprint (18 controls) on west campus that Mary set for me. Fun and surprisingly technically intense.

Work commute. The weather changed - instead of a warm south wind, we had a cold north wind.

I wanted to take a day off from running, but I also want to make some progress on the 31 day challenge. I set a point to point course on the downtown and Mt Oread sprint maps and biked the course. I actually made a mistake - skipped a control and had to go back and get it. It is tricky to keep track on the map when you also have to watch for traffic and the wind is blowing the map around in your hand. I guess what happened is that my thumb slipped and I navigated to the wrong control. It must be technique training if you boom.

orienteering 15:00 [2]

I arrived a bit earlier than I expected. So, I jogged around and checked out a few things that I thought would be worth a look at SMP.

Once Dick, Nancy, and Paul arrived, I handed out the maps and then ran the course. The course was designed to explore some areas of the map and features that I'd guessed might be sketchy. Some were. Some weren't.

Warm weather - must have been mid 50s - with sun and a bit of a breeze. Felt more like spring than winter.

Kartlek training today.

I used OL Laser to generate potential cliffs, then set a course to see if the OL Laser generated cliffs were really cliffs (or earth banks). I was out about 2 hours, but did a bit of standing and looking at stuff, so I'll record 80 minutes.
