This caught my eye on a discussion:
the qualification standards should be raised for juniors to compete at JWOC and WUOC. There is of course the counter argument that we need to expose as many juniors as possible to the higher level of competition but with that philosophy we water down the juniors we send by not holding them to a higher standard. Low qualification standards reward ineptitude and cost OUSA money.
I hadn't ever thought of JWOC and WUOC as opportunities to expose people to a higher level of competition. I'd always thought of both events as chance to inspire someone.
If it were my money that went to funding JWOC, WUOC and WOC teams, I think the ones I'd be least likely to want to spend money on would be the older WOC team members - except for those who'd demonstrated an especially high level. I'd be perfectly happy spending on younger orienteers who weren't putting in much training effort on the chance that they'd get inspired.
