Note

Tired.

It took me a long time to get to Texas on Thursday night/Friday morning. The snow shut down KCI for a bit. I stayed up a little too late on Friday and then had to get up a bit after 5 a.m. this morning to get to the airport.

Now, I'm home and tired. My plan for tonight is to just take it easy and see how I feel.
7 PM

orienteering race 43:32 intensity: (10:00 @2) + (18:32 @3) + (15:00 @4) *** 6.81 km (6:23 / km) +72m 6:04 / km
24c

PTOC night score event at Bonner Park. I didn't do a warm up, opting to start a bit easy and gradually increase the effort. I was tired from the recent lack of sleep and travel, so I decided to try to cut it short at 45 minutes (we had an hour) if I wasn't able to get all the controls by then.

Fun conditions - a bit of crusty snow with fog/mist.

I had a good run and got to the finish 10 seconds back of Jason E. In my last two local events I've been 23 and 10 seconds back of the best time.

Post-race meal at Arthur Bryant's with appearances by Pete, Raymond, Nathan, Paul, Dick and Dan.

5 points = an orienteering competition.

Note

Drove to work so I'd have my car to drive to the airport. If the weather cooperates I'll be in Texas in a few hours. Texas?!?

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton with the Trailhawks (including Raymond). I read the map a bit on the way out, but didn't look at it on the way back. I felt so-so. Gary got me thinking about trying the trail marathon in May. I'd have to do a few long runs and couldn't run it very hard, but I could probably get around the course. May could be warm. I'll give it some thought.

Work commute. It was a bit chilly this a.m. (16F).

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

1 point for today = either an earned rest or some x-training.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on trails and in the terrain at Rockcrusher. When I ran yesterday the temp was in the 70s. Today it was low 30s.

2 points = run + terrain.

I also put in 2+ hours of fieldchecking. One area I checked had been a field several decades ago. It has since turned into a mix of grass, head high saplings, young cedars and large older cedars. I should probably just map it as green. But, I spent some time poking around and finding some of the little open areas (rough open and rough open with vertical green). The laser scan data is so good that it was pretty straightforward to map - though some of the decisions were still tricky. We'll never use any of the little yellow areas, but it was kind of fun to put them on the map.

running 1:30:00 [2]

I put together a base map of the Longview area at Perry Lake. We have an old map (one of the white contour maps), so the area has been used for orienteering. I don't think it has been used since the early 1980s.

I jogged around exploring the area. I stopped a few times to take a close look at the map. I walked most of the hills. My legs are tired from yesterday.

Some of the terrain and Longview is very pleasant - open Oak forest. Here's a 30 second clip on one of the nicer bits:

2 points = run + terrain. I carried the base map and read it quite a bit, but it doesn't earn a point for that.

Yesterday was worth 5 points (an orienteering race).
