OK hosted a free O' session on the KU campus as part of Geography Awareness Week. It was very low effort (e.g. we reused the course from our NOD event) and we didn't do much to get the word out. I didn't have any idea what to expect. We got 7 people - all first timers and all made it around the course without any trouble. All but 2 were motivated by extra-credit from their geography professors. I was surprised that none of them were McCleary's students. Pleasantly surprised that other profs would give extra credit for orienteering.
One of the participants had an interesting route choice on the longest leg. She was on the sidewalk and passing a bus stop when a bus arrived. She hopped on the bus and got off at the next stop (just east of the last control).
I think our participation in Geography Awareness Week may have some potential as a way to introduce the sport to more KU students. We will plan a bit more for next time.
After the event, we had dinner at Esquina (while Mary ran at Clinton). Fritz had an El Jeffe burrito. I'm pretty sure the El Jeffe is the best deal in town (measured in calories per dollar):
