orienteering race 1:15:00 [4] ***
16c

US champs day 1 M45. Steady and reasonably clean run.

I tested a few new ideas about technique when I haven't done much recent orienteering (i.e. other than some sprints in mostly urban terrain). I was pretty happy with my test.

The terrain was really fun and not really like any other area in the US that I can think of.

I lost plenty of time to generally low fitness and a lack of terrain training. But I'm mostly satisfied with my race.

Note

Another Dallas Cowboys magazine arrived. Mary revealed part of her scheme for revenge. I have to say I'm surprised at how devious she can be.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The trip to the office included a detour to get a haircut and a stop at the bakery for office treats. The trip home featured lots of traffic - cars and pedestrians - related to tonight's football game (KU v KSU).

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. Most of the evening will go to laundry and packing.

Note

Wow....just wow...

47' for 5 km - don't think I would have been faster... on Twitpic

That's a night course.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I had a nice tail wind for the home trip.

running 55:00 [2]

On the trails at Clinton. I carried maps - the overlook sprint map and a laser scan (I've decided I don't like the word "lidar") contours + lutning image. The lutning image is impressive. I can pick out individual trees in the forest.

I looked at the laser scan map in detail and I did a few technique exercises on the sprint map.

I also tested out the new Inov 8 Oroc 280s. Nice.

The highlight of the day was when I was sitting at work and the building shook. It turned out to be an earthquake in northern Oklahoma that gently shook the building. I'd never felt an earthquake before.

Just the work commute. I had to stay a bit late for the CC meeting.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The trip to the office was in some light rain.

I went to work a few minutes early because I was supposed to be at a meeting first thing in the morning. I was a bit puzzled that nobody else was there. Turns out they canceled the meeting Friday afternoon and nobody told me.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. Actually more like ROW, ROW. I worked a bit harder than usual and my arms felt a bit tired afterwards. I must have been inspired by my pitiful weakness as I was struggling to open a jar of artichoke hearts last night.

Note

Cool article on fieldchecking. I was interested to see that they're using lidar for the first time for the Fem Dagars.

Biking to/from the Clinton overlook. On the trip home I took a little detour by the outlet park. I'm thinking it might be a nice little sprint map - not especially interesting, but convenient and a little bit different terrain.

running 55:00 [2]

Jogging on the trails from the overlook. I carried the map and a section of basemap (contours + lidar all-returns with "lutning" marked). I'm thinking it might be worth adding the hillside just west of the overlook map. It would be pretty easy to add and would increase the size of the mapped area substantially. The lidar data seem good.
