PTOC 10-hour rogaine at Indian Cave.
I went to all 42 circles but I didn't find two of the controls. There's some debate about the location of two of the controls. I'm comfortable that I was correct, but I didn't bother to go back out and double check. In both cases, I attacked the circle twice (or more). I probably spent a total of 15 minutes looking, double checking, and looking in nearby parallel features. Certainly, all 42 flags were out there as people found the flags I never found.
The map was a 1:10,000 modified USGS. For the most part it was fine. The contours are a bit rough. Once you get used to it, it isn't a problem. The trails were mixed. Some of them are mapped strangely. I often struggle with rough maps, but I did fine with the map.
I was able to jog more than I'd expected. Even at the end I was jogging on the trails and the downhills in the forest (where it was junky). After about 6 hours, I started struggling when I was in the forest. I changed a couple of route choices to stick with trails and avoid the forest. I also had some trouble in the last hour with my foot cramping on steep downhills or sidehills.
I think I managed to do well with eating/drinking. I ate some gels, drank some sport drink, and had a granola bar. I probably should have had a little bit more sport drink in the first 4 hours. I had scheduled my gel and sport drink consumption and stuck to that schedule. I wrote the schedule on a sheet of paper and checked it each hour to make sure I stayed on schedule.
Lots of fun.
