cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Woke up and got out the door on my bike. I did the bike trail that follows K-10. I turned around after I'd been out a bit over 30 minutes. Most of the trail was new to me.

I'm not in very good condition, but I'm really not in good condition for biking. I figure a few rides a week will make it feel a bit better.

I made it home in time to watch the last 30 minutes or so of the online coverage of Giro. That 2 km hill at the end in Bologna looked tough.

Note

Looking at some topos and I'm pretty sure that our current apartment is within a few hundred meters of the highest point in Lawrence - right about 1070 feet above sea level.

Jogging around to warm up. Warm out there. My left Achilles felt a bit odd (ever since I got up this a.m.).

PTOC sprint on a newly finished section of the JCCC map.

The main difficulty was dealing with the warm conditions (I'm guessing mid 80s and lots of sun + still air). I began a bit easy but then pushed a little too hard in the middle and had to slow down. It'll be interesting to take a careful look at the Quickroute tracks.

I beat Joe and Matt B. by a minute or so (and Matt was 1 second ahead of Joe). Clearly the most impressive performance was by Reta. She did the course 2 weeks after having half of a lung removed. Even Chopper would be impressed.

running 20:00 [2]

No bike commute today, but I did a little trail run after work. It felt good.

Note

Did a bit of house shopping.

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work (2 x 30 minutes). I was on my road bike. Riding a road bike on the road is like driving an SUV off road.

Note

Presented the street light report to the City Commission. I think it went ok. Feels good to be done. In other news, I picked up my road bike from Sunflower - plan to commute on it tomorrow.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Biked to work!

My route was to use Harvard as much as possible, paralleling 6th. I then worked my way over to Old West Lawrence and came downtown on 8th. Low traffic the whole way. Lawrence seems to get going a bit later in the morning than KC did.

My road bike should be ready tomorrow. Today, I was on the MTB.

I have a few things to learn as a bike commuter. There must, for example, be a good way to carry a pack without having it make your back sweaty.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Commute home. I pushed the pace a bit because I wanted to get home and take a 15 minute nap.

I knew that the commute was more downhill in the morning and more uphill in the evening...and it felt like it. The climb up 11th Street was surprisingly draining.

MTB on the pavement to/from Clinton. I parked at the trail head at the top of the hill just east of Lake Henry. My theory was that the trail might be a bit less muddy from this trail head.

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. I stuck to the white trail. Conditions were not as muddy as yesterday, but still plenty muddy. The mud seemed stickier today, so my shoes picked it up and made running a bit more of a chore. Still, it was nice to be out. I feels strange to run at Clinton without a map in my hands.

Just after I turned around I met a guy with an unusual hobby. He was doing a long trail run, but carrying a fishing pole. He explained that he was going fishing/running. He had a camelback and Ipod, too. He pointed out that a fishing pole was good for knocking down spider webs later in the year (the spider webs aren't out yet).
