orienteering 45:00 [2]

Easy running at Wyandotte. I carried a contours only map and read it a lot - enough to log some of the time as orienteering training.

running 45:00 [2]

This is the part of the run that wasn't O' training. I just carried the map and looked at it now and then.

The trails were muddy. I ran a bit on the trails, a bit in the forest (which really felt fun) and a little bit on the roads.

We've had interesting weather the last couple of days. Christmas was just above freezing and an inch or so of snow on the ground. Yesterday we had record warm temps - 65 when we went for a hike. It rained all night last night. When I got up this a.m. it was raining heavily and the temp was just above freezing. The temp dropped and ice started building up on the trees but the rain stopped and we didn't get enough ice to cause any damage or make the streets dangerous.

A very relaxed day. Spent a half hour on the rower.

orienteering 1:30:00 [2]

Jogging on the trails around Rockcrusher. I stopped every now and then to sketch the trails on a basemap I was carrying. Before we went out, I prepared a little basemap (2.5 meter Lidar contours) and I ran with a GPS. I'm curious to see how well the track matches the contours. I hope the match is good enough that the result will be a reasonably useful basemap.

On one hill top I came across a guy sitting under a cedar tree. That was unexpected. I stopped and chatted with him a bit. I showed him my map. As best I can tell he was just out to enjoy the day. And it was a nice day - mid 30s and some snow on the ground, but not terribly wet or slushy.

running 15:00 [2]

A bit of extra running when I got back to the car and Mary was still out in the woods.

other 30:00 [2]

After a very productive day at work (I'm not kidding), I got home and did a bit of time on the rower.

Soon after I finished, the phone rang. We've got a new niece!

running 15:00 [2]

Easy jogging to warm up and a few minutes to get back to the car.

A night O' session at Wyandotte. I ran a bit harder than planned. I ran Pasi-style, which makes night O' a good bit trickier. It also means you tend to go through some junkier forest than I would if I had a compass.

FUN FUN FUN.

The temp was right around freezing and a "wintery mix" was falling. The road at the park was slippery. I'm sure Eric and Tom - in their all wheel drive cars - would have driven through the park much faster than I did. They also, being tough guys, would probably have run in shorts. I'm a wimp. I wore O' pants (and gloves!).

A bit of time on the rowing machine. It felt ok.

My legs were surprisingly tired first thing in the morning.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Running on trails and in the terrain at Wyandotte. Cold out there - temp around 8 F and plenty of wind. When I got back to the car, Mary was still out. So I jogged over to the end of her course and found her.

I did 3 short courses during the run (5+, 7+ and 9+ minutes). I focused on precise rough orienteering.
