orienteering race 1:30:00 [2] ***
24c

Score O' event at Camp Geiger near St. Joe. The area and map were new for me.

I'm quite sore and didn't run hard. But, I'm very happy with how I felt. I was afraid I'd have to walk.

Camp G. is a nice area. The terrain is typical Missouri loess. Some really nice and steep stuff. One area was an old quarry, filled with junk and broken bottles. That wasn't so nice.

I climbed 1280 feet.

Assuming I feel slightly better tomorrow, I'll do a long-ish trail run.

cycling 30:00 [1]

More improvements. My knee felt better. My ribs are still sore. The biggest improvement is in my guts (i.e. below the ribs). I think the swelling is down quite a bit. That's good. The knee is the most worrying, but least uncomfortable. The guts is the least worrying, but most uncomfortable. The ribs is just annoying.

Getting on and off the trainer was uncomfortable but not too bad. Compared to getting on a Yak, it was easier but more uncomfortable.

I'll try to jog tomorrow.

cycling 30:00 [1]

All of the various swelling was down a bit today. I managed to get on my bike and spent 30 minutes on it. Some discomfort, but not nearly as bad as when I tried to jog.

running 10:00 [2]

Left knee felt better. Ribs/guts felt a little bit better.

I decided to run for 20-30 minutes at an easy pace to see how it felt. I stopped after ten minutes when I realized it felt uncomfortable (the ribs, not the knee).

I was going to try the bike, but lifting my leg to get on the saddle was quite unpleasant (ribs again).

If I improve, I'll try again tomorrow.

Note

My knee feels better, less swelling than yesterday. My ribs feel about the same. No training.

If I feel a bit better tomorrow, I think I'll try to do some jogging and/or cycling.

Note

Sore ribs. Sore knee.

running 10:00 [2]

Warming up before the race. I should have done a bit longer warm up.

Flying Pig -- M21 classic day. I had a reasonable run going when I hurt myself on the way to the 13th control.

I tweaked my left knee pretty well and landed quite hard on my right side/ribs. I'll be sore for a few days (or more) and my knee is fairly swollen right now (4/3). Bummer.

Thanks to Dan and Mike W. who stopped to check on me (maybe someone else, too?).

Note

Flying home was high stress. Our plane was hit by lightning as we left Cincinnatti (and was already delayed due to bad weather), we landed in a storm in Indianapolis and had to wait for a new plane. The lightning had damaged our plane. Lots of waiting in airports, feeling sore (knee and ribs).

I'm not usually scared of flying, but this was a bit scary. I just reminded myself that as nervous as I was, Peter would have been much worse. Also, I figured that if Big Nick could fly around without radar and decent weather forecasts, we'd have no trouble.
