cycling 30:00 [1]

I over did it Thursday. So, I did almost nothing Friday (though I went to Dad's retirement reception in Lawrence). Today I spent a lot of time resting and icing my knee. I rode the trainer during the first half of KU versus South Carolina State.

orienteering 35:00 [3]

I jogged around a night O' course at SMP (thanks to Keith L. for setting it up). I jogged all but the steep downhills. After about 20 minutes, my calf started bothering me and I slowed even more. I think the calf is suffering because the leg still gets swollen and the muscle itself has become quite weak. Hopefully, not overdoing it any more and working on strength will clear it up.

running 7:00 [1]

Ran at PHHS. I began with 1 K on the track, then I did 3x100 meters on grass. The running feels good, but I'm going really slowly. I timed a couple of laps and am doing over 10 minutes/mile. I don't feel like I can go any faster. On the other hand, it wasn't all that long ago that it took me over 10 minutes to cover one lap.

I rode the trainer in the basement while watching the first half of KU v. Princeton. When I watch b-ball, I usually ride hard when KU is on defense, then ease off when they've got the ball. That is what I did tonight.

running 7:00 [1]

I jogged for 1 Km (with no breaks!) at the PHHS track. Then I did 2x100 meters on the grass. My plan is to add a bit of grass running to get my legs used to slightly rougher terrain.

Ho hum...25 minutes on the trainer in the basement.

Note

I paid a visit to my orthopedic surgeon today. After bending my leg in various ways and trying to get it to move in strange ways (or hurt), he said it seemed to be doing well. He said the chances of needing surgery are now "1 in a thousand" (last time it was 1 in ten). He said the tibia was fractured. Ouch. It seems like everytime I've seen him the diagnosis sounds worse. He wants me to stick with biking, strength excercises and stretching. He isn't thrilled about running, but said "running is like smoking, it is hard to stop." I told him how I'd been slowly increasing my jogging. He said that sounded ok, but not to replace biking or leg excercises with running. Overall, I was quite happy with the visit. I left feeling good.

Rode on the trainer in the basement. I felt like running, but thought it was better not to. Plenty of time icing the knee tonight.

orienteering 50:00 [3]

I did the green leg on OK/PTOC's 8-point relay team. It was tough to be a spectator for the 4-point team. I pushed myself physically -- jogging almost all of the trails (even a couple of downhill sections) and jogging a bit when I was off trail but in very mild terrain. My knee stiffened a lot by the time I got home. The flight home combined with no ice was largely to blame (I think).
