MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

Rolled around on the bike paths - enough to break a good sweat and feel like I moved a bit.

This morning my legs felt tired from yesterday, but they felt fine on the bike.

running 15:00 [1]

Jogging around to warm up a bit.

running race 25:19 [4] 4.99 km (5:04 / km)
ahr:166 max:178

NoLaw 5K hosted by Ad Astra.

The temp was ok. It was humid as some rain came through earlier. The sun was out and felt hot. The first 2 miles of the course has a lot of sun.

My pacing was off - too fast in the beginning, then slowed in the last mile or so. I should probably do something to improve on that.

It is kind of depressing that I run so slowly. On the other hand, this was a PR for the course for me (I ran it three times last year).

Fun.

Note

In St Louis. We didn't make it home last night. Debris closed the KC Airport. Today's flights were basically all full. So we're renting a car to drive home. It's kind of frustrating. But, were also lucky the tornado missed our house by a couple of miles, so all is well.

Street orienteering on the OSM + OOM map that I made of the area around Kathleen's home.

Part of the course took me around the Google campus. The area might have made for an interesting sprint map. I also wondered about how busy it would be on a non-holiday. On the holiday the place was empty.

Two observations from my jog : there are a lot of Tesla's and a lot of people seemed way overdressed. I was more than comfortable in shorts and a t-shirt, even just walking, but I saw lots of people in jackets, including insulated jackets (like those Patagonia puff jackets).

My feet were feeling a little sore at the end.

Short morning jog around the neighborhood with a map I made (OSM based with symbols from OOM). Fun.

Biking on West Campus.

running 30:00 [2]

Running on West Campus including 4 x Half Ulrik's Hill. Weather was interesting - sun when I started, then clouds popped up, and then rain. All in just about 15-20 minutes.

running 15:00 [2]

Cool (50F) and a cold rain falling. I'd checked the lightning map and it looked like I had time to get in a 30 minute run before any lightning would arrive. As I left the house I saw a flash and counted to 13 Mississippis before hearing thunder. I figured I'd keep track and turn back as the thunder got closer. But after less than 10 minutes I saw a flash and counted to less than 1 Mississippi. I turned around and got home.

The cold water felt good. And it is kind of fun to run so little.

MTB cycling 2:15:00 [1]

MTB on paved bike paths (plus a little bit on streets and gravel). Most of this was the Lawrence Loop. I went clockwise. The wind was a little bit of a chore, but no complaints about the temp (low 60s F at the start).

I felt pretty good.

I saw a scissor tailed flycatcher near Rock Chalk Park.

The weather today wasn't the best for training - storms expected to pop up throughout the day with decent chances of lightning and hail. The mid morning looked like the best time to get out. But, I wanted to do something where I'd be able to get out of the weather if lightning or hail popped up.

I biked to three different maps and ran some short courses.

First, I was on the Spooner Hall map. This is one of my favorite areas on campus when the students aren't around. This is commencement weekend, so there are still a few students left, but the map was mostly student-free. I did 4 mini courses.

Then I ran a street O' on the map of the neighborhood around my Mom's house and the Water Tower Park. I got soaked on the course and on the next bike stretch. I heard some thunder, but it sounded pretty far away.

I finished up with a little course on the 1:1000 map around Lindley Hall. Mostly I wanted to check to see if the map needed updating.

While I got completely soaked, this was much more fun than any time I've mowed the lawn.

Rolling around on the bike paths. Hot out there. Windy, too. Much more fun than mowing.

running 35:00 [2]

Jogged around on West Campus. Temp was ~90F and that wasn't very nice.

I wore my new shoes - NB 880v7. I can't remember the last time I ran in regular running shoes. I usually run in O' shoes or "trail shoes." The new shoes are very comfortable and cushioned. I think I like them. They don't have much grip - noticeable going up a hill on grass.

running 30:00 [2]

On West Campus and including 4 x Half Ulrik's Hill. I jogged easily on the first and third time up the hill. I worked a bit harder on the second and fourth time. Still kind of hot out there.

Felt, so-so.

MTB cycling 2:15:00 [1]

MTB on the bike paths - the Lawrence Loop + a bit extra. The paved path in Burcham is closed. The river had receded a bit, but the trail looked to still be covered in a mix of mud and puddles of river water.

When I started the sun was shining. After about 30 minutes, it was cloudy. Then when I was passing Martin Park rain began falling. More rain the last 15 minutes or so. Kind of fun. But, I need a bit of sun to dry out the lawn before I mow.

orienteering 1:25:00 [3]

Ft Leavenworth Adventure Series race. Connie set a course that was shorter than I'd expected, but still a blast.

I started out with street orienteering. Near the end of the street orienteering I did the paint ball control. You had to hit 5 targets. I pictured myself as Dorothea Wierer and planned to pick through the targets quickly. I hit the first three quickly, but then my paint ball rifle was out of paint balls. I switched rifles, but was then a bit off and didn't get the last two nearly as quickly.

The end of the street orienteering was a little compass exercise. You had a couple of compass bearings and distances that brought you to a monument. You had to answer a question based on the monument. The monument is new. I didn't read the information, but it was about the all-female African American postal unit. Here's more info:

https://www.army.mil/article/216907/new_monument_h...

Next up was bike orienteering. The course had a couple of interesting route choice options. It went though a section of the map where the roads and bike paths are mapped, but the individual buildings aren't show on the map. The next version of the map will show all of the buildings.

After the bike, I did the puzzle - you went around the corner to a table that had groups of farm animals in rows. You had to memorize a specific row and the go back to another table and recreate the order. My row was a red barn, rabbit, three pigs, a goat, a horse and a sheep. Easy.

Next, I shuffled over to the edge of the lake and got in a kayak and paddled around the lake. We had canoe paddles rather than kayak paddles (i.e. that long stick with a paddle at each end). It was a little awkward to keep shifting sides. After a short loop around the lake...I was done.

Fun. Nice conditions - temp in the low 50s F and a few sprinkles.

Connie had Turkey hotdogs at the finish.

orienteering 35:00 [2]

Blair set up a street orienteering co-hosted by Ad Astra and as part of the weekly Mass Street Milers' run. The course visited each of the studio 804 houses in east Lawrence. See https://studio804.com/ for info on the projects.

Early in the run a guy ran by with a Stockholm Marathon t-shirt. I caught up to him (though he is a bit younger and thinner than me) and chatted with him. It turns our he was an undergrad exchange student at Stockholm University in the 1988-89 academic year. So we overlapped a bit. If I remember right, I was in Linkoping in 1988 and then Lund/Linkoping/Stockholm in 1989.

Fun event and it exposed a few more people to orienteering. I'm guessing there were 12-15 non-orienteers who did the course.

Easy jogging on West Campus. I felt kind of drained. I think the ALGA conference is great, but it is a bit draining.

Next up...I'm going to watch a bit of the video series about the Norwegian team's prep for the WOC (with English subtitles): https://youtu.be/F1DTGZs6Wqs

MTB cycling 1:55:00 [1]

MTB on road, levee and river trail single track. Fun, but I got more tired than I expected.

On the way home I saw someone biking toward me and said hello...then realized it was Damon. I stopped and chatted a little. He was biking with a friend and introduced me as the guy who was either the first or second owner of the yellow Giant Iguana. I told him I was the first owner. Funny to be known that way.

ALGA is underway. I did a 8-noon session this morning in Kansas City.

PTOC park sprint at Sar-Ko-Par.

I worked hard and had a good run. I lost a few seconds when I mistook a little bit of trail for frisbee golf for a real trail (partly after some stress of dogs barking at me). I pushed a bit too hard around 10 and 11 and then had to slow on the way to 12. I made it through two crowds without much trouble, but probably making those crowds think I was crazy.

I beat Dean by about 20 seconds. That was unexpected. He made a few mistakes.

MTB cycling 30:00 [1]

After mowing, I did a short bike ride on West Campus.

Before mowing I went to the KU Art History awards presentation. Pam invited me a few weeks ago and it turned out that it fit my schedule. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was cool. Most of the awards were for undergraduates in various art history classes. Teaching assistants and professors nominated outstanding students. The students were called up one by one and the nomination/justification was read. Then each student got an art book. The books seemed to be selected specifically for each student. It was cool to see the kids - most looked a bit uncomfortable, but also proud and happy.

They also gave out the scholarship in my Dad's name. It is for undergrads studying art history who are going to study abroad. One of the three students was in attendance (the other two are doing spring semester in Italy). Pam and I got to meet Emma. She's going to study in Angers, France.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

My body feels a bit beat up from the weekend. My shin is still a bit sore and my left foot feels like it was pounded. Otherwise, I was feeling good today. I went on the MTB on the bike trail a bit past Baker Wetlands. I was pleasantly surprised that the water had receded from the morning and the bike path was no longer underwater.
