cycling 1:00:00 [1]

To/from Clinton. Nice temps and clouds, with some light rain for a few minutes on the way home.

running 30:00 [2]

On the trails at Clinton.

Trailhawks didn't run there this morning (probably due to the rain?) so there were plenty of spiderwebs for me to find. The trail was in good shape. We had some rain last night, but no enough to create any mud on the trails.

I probably should have run more like an hour, but I kind of wanted to get home and watch the last stage of the Tour. 15 years ago we were in Paris for the last stage. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago.

I felt mostly ok.

A pre-breakfast jog on West Campus.

An easy bike ride on the bike path with Mary. We headed out to Baker Wetlands.

Ad Astra's NoLaw 5K. The weather was about as good as you can get for a early evening race in July - temp around 81-82 and sunny.

I felt ok for the first mile or so, then I started feeling over heated. The first 2 miles is in the sun. In the last mile, I took two quick breaks to dump some water on my head and shoulders to try to cool off a bit. It helped.

Kept ahead of Meangene, but just barely.

running 10:00 [2]

Some jogging and walking to warm up.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Rolled around to see how I was feeling and break a good sweat.

Normal? Not quite. But I felt not too terrible.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

Still not normal, but better than I've felt for several days. I put out the markers for today's Sunflower Games Orienteering on the Washburn University Campus. I'd have preferred to run the courses, but some easy jogging to put out the markers was a much wiser decision. I'm hopeful that I'll be close to normal by Tuesday or Wednesday.

orienteering 10:00 [2]

We had a OK training on the Water Tower Park map. I set a score course with questions to answer at each location. We advertised it on the OK FB page a few days ago (inspired largely by Fletcher being in town for a few days and looking for some opportunities to do some training). It was a PYOM (print your own map) event. I was happy with the turnout (Laura, Mary, Fletcher, Gene, Fritz, Blair, and Mom/Ron visited since the start is across from their house).

I have a light cold or something. I figured a slow easy 20 minute jog would be ok. But, after about 5-6 minutes I felt out of it. I jogged back and called it a day.

Roger is visiting. He knows Mary and I orienteer, but he didn't really know what orienteering is. So, I set a course on West Campus and ran through it with him. He did all of the navigation, but I gave him some tips (like explaining the basic rules of the game and map symbols). He picked it up very quickly. We stopped at each control and he'd plan the next leg.

He made two small errors. We ran past an area with sprinklers watering grass at the Endowment building. Running through the sprinklers was enough of a distraction that Roger went about 40 meters too far. He also made a parallel error at a sidewalk junction among the buildings. I told him both were good examples of the sort of error that is common - getting distracted or mistaking a parallel feature.

Roger lives at altitude (~7500) and does some trail running (and is 10+ years younger than me). When we hit any uphill he pulled away even though he wasn't really pushing the pace.

Lots of fun and we got out before it was very hot (mid 70s), but it sure was humid.

running 40:00 [2]

Shuffled around on West Campus before breakfast. Muggy, but only mid/upper 70s.

After the run, Mary, Roger and I went out for breakfast where I ate a bunch of biscuits and gravy.

Call it 35 minutes of biking. It was actually more, but slower than usual. On the bike paths.

Some storms and plenty of clouds during the day, so the temp was relatively comfortable.

cycling 35:00 [1]

Planned to run on West Campus, but when I was driving home I heard the weather - currently 103F at Lawence Airport. That's too hot. So I rolled around on my bike for about the same amount of time I'd planned to jog.

cycling 25:00 [1]

Biking to/from Ulrik's Hill with a little detour.

I wore my homemade ice-vest with just the back ice in place. I figured it might help keep me cooler on such a hot day. I think it helped, but it isn't the most comfortable thing to wear when you are moving.

running 25:00 [2]

With 3x very slow/easy Ulrik's Hill. I felt ok and the hill is mostly shaded. That helped. I also moved slowly. That helped.

I'm ready for winter.

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

To/from Clinton.

Got out the door and on the road by 7:30 and it was wonderful. We had a nice cool evening and the temp was about 62 when I left the house.

On the way home, I saw Damon M, Susy S, and Craig W, all on the bike path between the dam and the arboretum.

running 30:00 [2]

Easy jogging on the trails.

Jogging to pick up a few controls. Climbing the last hill in the sun was tough. I walked it all.

Gene set a course at Clinton Overlook. We got going before it was terribly hot, but it was still warmer than I'd like for running. I felt like I ran ok. Maybe I just went too slowly or maybe I did a better job of managing the effort in the warm weather.

I was way behind Dean and a bit behind John G.

I'm having trouble uploading the QR to DOMA. I get a message that is something about being too large. I'm not sure if that's the file size. If it is, that seems strange because I had no trouble with files that are larger. I finally got it to work by scanning the map at lower resolution 100 dpi instead of 150 (and the reducing the size and image quality before uploading).

Note

I don't know how I missed this before....I found a bunch of 2014 air photos on kansasgis.org. I think there cover the entire state and are in the early spring, so no leaves. The photos are from 2014 and newer would be better, but they will be useful.
8 AM

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Biking to/from Clinton.

running 35:00 [2]

Running on the trails. I saw a lot of other runners - maybe 12 others - and 5 or 6 MTB riders.

I felt pretty good, but my h.r. was higher than I expected given the effort. I wonder if I slept badly or was a bit dehydrated or something.

Fun.

Shuffled slowly around in the heat on West Campus. It was hot. The "feels like" is hotter in Lawrence than Dallas.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Jogging around West Campus and the main campus. Fun. I took it easy. I checked out the new building next to Lindley Hall. They've put out a bunch of different boulders with plaques explaining the type of rock, age and source. It is kind of like a little geology museum. It reminded me of the visitor center near Rio Serrano in Torres Del Paine, except the KU version is more impressive (though the view wasn't).

4 short bits of courses on West Campus and Lindley Hall. I jogged through them. Fun.
