Note

I've taken two days off with no more exercise than a couple of walks. I've been feeling a bit hectic - kind of a mix of work, making dinner, and mentally prepping for a couple of trips. So a couple of days with nothing felt right.

MTB cycling 40:00 [1]

I rolled around on West Campus. It was enough to break a good sweat and feel like I'd done something outdoors. But it wasn't much more.

running 40:00 [2]

I shuffled around on West Campus. In the beginning I did not feel very good - legs were heavy feeling. But things improved after about 10 minutes and all was good.

I get a daily news release email from KU. Today a story caught my eye. Don Sloan is a nice guy and it was cool to see that he recognized my Dad:

MTB cycling 1:55:00 [1]

I biked over to the river trail, did a loop and biked home. It was fun, but I got tired already at the turn-around and my legs felt really worn out climbing over Mt Oread at the end.

I haven't ridden the LRT in a while. As Sandy had told me, they've done some work on the trail and made a few spots easier. That's good, but even before the work the trail was pretty easy technically. Even though it is technically easy, I'm still improving with my technique almost every time I ride the LRT.

PTOC event at Bluff Woods.

I had a rough run. I wasn't strong in the terrain and didn't have the mental sharpness to push hard. I also wasn't really making sense of the map and had lots of small misses (and one big one) and kept being surprised by things. Maybe just one of those days.

The terrain is interesting with some nice and open forest. The hills are big. I quickly counted my climb at 360 meters on a 5.1 km course.

We stopped at a tacqueria in a gas station in Atchison on the way home. Good food.

running 40:00 [2]

Jogged around on West Campus. It was warm (69F), sunny and very light wind. The trees are starting to bud and the grass is getting green. I miss cold and winter.

I shuffled slowly around on West Campus. I can't say my legs felt good. But it felt good to get out and move around.

I had an errand, so I took care of it on my commuter bike.

My legs still feel a little tired.

An easy ride on the bike paths on my commuter bike. I pumped up the tires when Jenny was here and wanted a bike to get around town. So I figured I'd take advantage of that and do a little ride while my legs recover from yesterday.

PTOC 3-hour rogaine at Crowder State Park. Crowder has some fantastic open forest. But it also has some junky open areas and some junky woods. My arms and legs got a bit scratched up by some sort of strange thorny trees that I'm not familiar with.

I got tired at the end. When I finished and went inside my legs started feeling uncomfortable. Then they started hurting a little bit. I sat down, but that didn't help. My legs hurt sitting down. After about 30 minutes (and a sport drink and a bowl of chili) my legs started feeling ok - tired but not hurting. I haven't had that happen in years.

A fun day of orienteering - big thanks to PTOC. Mike S set the courses. I'm not entirely sure of who did what, but I think Mike, Dick N, and Paul spent a bunch of time in the cold rain yesterday putting out controls. Nick handled the food and chili.

Nearly 3 hours of exercise should help keep Cristina-bot quiet for a while.

orienteering 15:00 [3] ***
18c

Short and intense sprint O' course on West Campus (a course from 2011).

Mary, Frtiz, Gene and Jenny ran. Mary set us off a minute apart and that worked out well with everyone finishing close together. Jenny just edged out Mary.

I did a bunch of stupid orienteering. I skipped two controls. One I realized and corrected, costing me probably a minute. The other I didn't know I'd skipped unti after finishing when Jenny pointed it out.

Nice dinner at El Portro afterwards. When Jenny lived in Lawrence we did several sessions where we'd do sprint O' followed by Mexican food. So we did that again.

Orienteering practice at Dad Perry Park. We re-ran a 3.9 km course that someone (Mary?) set a few years ago. It was a blast. The park is interesting with lots of trails and trail junctions. The map is in pretty good shape. A few areas need some updates.

Jenny is in town. After the O', we went downtown for a late-ish dinner at the Free State Brewery.

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run with a few off trails detours at Lexington Lake. I checked out a few features on the map. I also stopped and chatted with a guy walking his dogs. He is involved in building the trails.

When I got home, Jenny B. was here. Fun. She's in town for a couple of days during her visit to the US to go to a conference in New Orleans. We will set up some casual O' training (plus eating Mexican food) the next few days.

running 1:45:00 [2]

I ran at an easy pace on the trails on the south shore of Clinton. Fun. The weather was nice for running - cloudy, about 40F and some wind. I didn't see anyone else out there.

When I woke up this morning my legs felt tired. I guess it was the 45 minute bike ride yesterday. That's kind of discouraging, but a good reminder that I should try to get out on the bike a little more consistently. That'll be easier now that DST has started.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

MTB around West Campus with a couple of trips up Ulrik's Hill.

Today was the last in-class session of the KU class. This was the first time I'd been largely on my own. Three of us lead the class and we have a teaching assistant. But one of the three was only here the first session and then left for a new job running the Washington State performance audit office. John missed class today because his mom died a couple of days ago. Cassandra (the teaching assistant) had traveled to/from Chicago to take care of her Mom (who was sick) twice. That's a lot of driving and it meant she was behind on her studying. She was a big help to have in class, but it was also my day to carry the load. Fortunately, we had some guest speakers come in and the students are really good. They are engaged and easy to work with. So it went pretty well. But it is also tiring.

I cut the MTB ride short so I could watch the KU basketball game.It was a good game, mostly exciting and KU won.

running 50:00 [2]

I checked my email in the middle of the afternoon and Cristina-bot reminded me that I better get training.

The weather was interesting today. Lawrence had wind gusts up to 51 mph. We had snow falling, but not sticking.

Nice jog around on trails and grass and pavement on West Campus.

OK at Clinton Overlook. Sandy B set the course. Fun. Rough woods and it felt hilly.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Long-ish and slow trail run at Clinton State Park. I parked at the beach and headed west. I wanted to get a set of GPS tracks for those trails. I'm working (very slowly) on a map of the state park and having tracks for those trails will be useful. I stopped and made a few notes for the map.

It was warm - upper 50s at the start and mid 60s at the finish. Sunny, too.

running 10:00 [2]

Very short run at Lexington Lake on the way home. I'd told Paul about a well I'd found in the woods that should be added to the map he's working on. But I must have pointed to the wrong spot or Paul mis-remembered, becuase he looked and never found the well. So, on the way home from work I stopped and found the well. It was right where I'd remembered, but I might not have pointed it out to Paul correctly. In any case, I found the well and I've sent a clip of the map with the well added to Paul.

The run was very short because Mary and I went to dinner at Mom and Ron's. I didn't have time for more.
