running 40:00 [2] ***
14c

I began with a couple of hours of field checking at the Riverfront. I'm using OOM on the Kindle tablet. I'm still not quite used to it. I think it's the way to go, but it'll take me some more practice to feel comfortable with it.

The running was a course I designed on the base map to get me to see a few things I was curious about. I ended up cutting the course short due to giant piles of river ice pushed up along one area I'd planned to run.

I was tired by the end.

Went out for a 40-minute headlamp jog on West Campus. But I got home sooner (39 minutes).

Nice evening - cool and clear.

I was thinking of going for a bit of a run, but I didn't sleep well last night and my motivation was suffering.

Work commute. Kind of a bummer to have to go back to work after having 4 days off. Oh well.

Dinner at Hank Charcuterie with Summer and Silas was good.

Jogged through a course at the Riverfront on a KP map.

We parked at the corner of N 1900 and E 1300. I'd never parked there because I didn't realise you had good access to the levee and park from there.

We ran in the area that was further south than where we ran yesterday and it is terrain I'm less familiar with. That was fun.

I have lots of memories of running in this area from the 1980s. Back then there was a hiking trails parallel the river. At some point, people stopped using it and it wasn't maintained. That's too bad as the area is nice. I remember running along the trails with Egil Iversen and Mikael Stern back in 1984. I like to think it was important training for Iversen for the coming year. I wonder what Iversen and Stern are up to.

I think I may do a little more work on the map and set up some sort of training. It is a neat area and very different than our typical terrain.

Easy jog around a 4.5 km course at the Riverfront. The riverfront is a map I made a few years ago. I also carried a KP map based on the 2015 lidar.

The temp was crazy. 67F (18C) while running. But, there was also a lot of ice in the forest. At one point, we had a 50 meter stretch of ice across the route. the ice was less than an inch thick, so you broke through with each step and were up to knee deep in ice cold water.

The lidar-based vegetation from the 2015 data was very good.

Fun.

At Rockcrusher. I designed a set of short courses mainly on trails. At each control, I also marked a nearby feature with an X. The idea was that you'd stop at the control circle and try to spot the feature marked with the X. I figured about half of the features would be visible and about half wouldn't be visible, but you'd be able to see something that would lead you to the feature.

It turned out you could only see 2 of the Xs. You could see a feature that would have lead you to the X in all (or maybe all but 1) case.

In retrospect, I underestimated how dense underbrush and trees would cut down on visibility. I'd been thinking more about how far you can see when you are running, but when you are at a specific location, the visibility is much more variable and typically shorter than I'd guessed. I think that's a useful thing to know.

The same training would be interesting in some different types of terrain. I'll have to experiment some.

running 15:00 [2]

Some slow jogging on trails before Mary finished.

I jogged (very slowly) up the Rockcrusher Road hill. My legs were tired and I wasn't super-motivated. But, I managed to keep the pace (slow jog, but not a walk) to the top by imaging Jenny B. yelling at me.

running 35:00 [2]

Headlamp run on West Campus. Clear sky and bright stars - really nice.

In a few spots the ground was slippery. Even though the temp was above freezing, there were still icy spots. I think I'll drive to work again tomorrow. I dislike biking on ice.

Last summer I was playing with the 2015 lidar and made a 1:10000 KP + OSM map that covered our house and West Campus. Today, I dug that map out and ran a course on it.

On two legs I cut through some of the forest. That was slow. I started on little deer trails, but lost them and ended up just marching slowly through some crappy terrain.

It was cold today. -10F when I woke up. I waited until the temp reach 1F before I left for my run (around noon). It was not uncomfortable at all. I guess I got the layers just right. The wind was very light and the sun shone. That helped.

Note

I looked at some of MeanGene's old orienteering maps. Highlights included:

Maps of Clinton State Park before the lake was filled
The classic George McCleary map of Shawnee Mission Park
Maps from old, long gone, clubs - The Kansas State University Orienteering Club and the Oklahoma State University Orienteering Club

I'll probably post a few of these old maps on twitter.

Mary had planned an OK training session at Rockhaven. But the roads were icy and snow was forecast. She cancelled the training (which is good, I'd have cancelled it Friday night based on the forecast). Instead, I did a run from the house. Sidewalks and side streets were icy. I wore spikes.

The temp was chilly and falling, with some north wind.

I quickly drew 6 mini-courses on the Pioneer Cemetery map. The courses had lots of direction changes. I ran them back to back with short rests (maybe 30 seconds).

I was focusing pretty well. The navigation isn't difficult. The wind was cold when you ran north or along the north edge of the cemetery.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Misty, drizzle all afternoon. The temp was slowly rising from about 29F to 33F. I was a bit concerned about slick spots. I biked home very carefully. I didn't have any problems.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Temp just above 20F and a bit of wind. Not bad at all.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Mary used my head lamp for a run on West Campus. Her lamp stopped working. Maybe Santa will bring her a new lamp.

Row, row.

After a bit of time on the Concept 2 rower, it was time to cook dinner. I made pea soup. It was very good. I don't remember when we got the immersion blender, but I'm glad we did.

running 40:00 [2]

I jogged around with my headlamp on West Campus. When I was on the trails I was thinking - I hope I don't run into a mountain lion without my mountain lion repelling pants. I didn't.

My hands were cold at the start and took a good 10+ minutes to warm up. That was strange.

PTOC 2 hour score O' at Heartland.

Fun event. The woods were a little more thorny than I'd remembered. Fortunately, my mountain-lion repelling pants provide some added protection against thorns. Marv noticed the odd purple color.

I was running a bit head-to-head with Jason E. from about 17 to the finish. When he was leading, I'd watch and take a slightly different route hoping to get ahead. On the leg from 11-8 I'd thought about following the stream. But I saw how junky that looked as I was approaching 11. I'd noticed the trail option and when Jason went on the stream, I took the trail. That got me ahead for good.

Cool and a bit damp, but not really raining and I had minimal problems with glasses fogging. I wore my old-man rain shield. I think that helped during the periods when there was some drizzle.

My feet got cold between finishing and heading out to pick up controls.

Went to the event with Gene and Sandy. Gene ran pretty well, but Sandy ran off the map a bit.

At Rockcrusher. I designed a nearly-entirely-on-trails orienteering course with a bunch of controls. It made the time pass quickly. I took a couple of little detours to take a look at something that needs to be added or changed on the map.

I didn't see any bow hunters.

This was the second test of my new custom-made orienteering pants. So far, so good. I'll give them another test tomorrow. If all seems well, I'll probably start on a pair that isn't purple.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Some snow fell during the day. It wasn't much, but it was enough that my lunch hour walk had a few slick spots. So the biking home was extra cautious. It worked out fine, but I'm not super comfortable with the potential for black ice. And when it is dark, it is really hard to tell the condition of the pavement in the beam of an LED lamp.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Then, we went out to dinner at Pie Five. Not bad.

Some KP mapping in NW Arkansas that I added to RG ad hoc:

Checking a few control locations for an upcoming event + collecting mini-makers + setting mini-markers.

This was the first test of my new orienteering pants. Mary helped me, but I did a bunch of cutting and sewing. Mary made and adjusted the pattern and told me what to do and how to sew things. We made the pants with supplex. Supplex is pretty good for O' pants around here. They provide a little bit more protection than regular O' pants. The difficult thing with supplex is to get pants that are not super-baggy. Mary made a pattern that wasn't super-baggy.

The only downside to the pants, based on my first test run, is that they are purple. Mary had a bunch of purple supplex. The next pair will be in a better color, probably black.

Left calf felt almost normal.

Also, I didn't see the area mountain lion: http://cjonline.com/news/2016-12-03/marc-murrell-m...

Jogging around the Ft Leavenworth "Tinsel 20" score orienteering. Felt slow.

I stopped at a few places to add some notes for map updates. The maps is lidar + some additions from air photos + some GPS tracks for trails. It isn't bad, but it isn't field checked. Every time I do a course, I find a few changes and add them.

They had chili at the finish. That was a pleasant surprise on a chilly day.

Fritz ran the long version (Forsty 40). Sandy did something, but she started after I was out and wasn't back when I left.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. It seemed really hot in the house. Then I realized I forgot to turn on the fan that points at the rowing machine.

Note

Two days of no running. That should be good for the left calf that was feeling off.

I didn't ride my bike the last two days either. That's because I was an a conference in O.P. and had to drive. That was ok. This morning I stopped and bought gas on the way to O.P. I'm pretty sure the last time I bought gas was in early September.
