Note

Orienteering technique training for 31 days in a row.

That's the 4th time I did the 31 day challenge and the second time I finished without any off days. It is actually pretty difficult to make it work without any breaks. I think one year I turned an ankle and one year I got sick. This year I managed to stay healthy enough and didn't have any injuries. The mild weather this year helped.
1 PM

orienteering 50:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (25:00 @4) ***

Five short courses as intervals, with easy jogging between. During the easy jogging (and occasionally stopping) I looked at the map and checked out some things for future fieldchecking.

4

running 25:00 [2]

Some of the time I was just mindlessly jogging. This was that time.

At Rockcrusher hanging some tapes for the March event.

The terrain seems rough. I think the courses will be short, but the times will be ok. I also think that an orienteer who looks carefully at some route choice options will be rewarded.

Also running on the rails and in the terrain.

orienteering 10:05 [3] 1.59 km (6:20 / km)

Mary set a nice short night sprint course on West Campus. I wanted something short with plenty of controls. I felt a bit tired and short and lots of controls would make it easy to concentrate.

running 15:00 [2]

A bit of a warm up and the return trip home.

orienteering 54:07 [2] 5.87 km (9:13 / km)

Night orienteering at Clinton. I ran with a strange map - KP vegetation, 2.5 meter contours from lidar that I made a long time ago. Some of the open areas were deep and rough grass.

I stopped for 1 minute on a hill top, turned off my headlamp, looked at the stars, and listened to the coyotes. That was nice.

Another commuter bike orienteering course on the way home from work.

I stopped for a few minutes when I went by Mom and Ron's house to say hello.

I also made a mistake at 12. I was stressed by some crazy drivers and I think that made me mis-remember the route.

Night orienteering on the Clinton Overlook map. I drew a course that kept me largely on trails (with just enough off trails to get covered in stick tights and a few thorn scratches).

Lots of controls.

orienteering 10:00 intensity: (2:30 @2) + (7:30 @4) 1.4 km (7:09 / km)

I did some sprint legs on the West Campus map. The course had 3 legs where I tested two options. Before I tested, I looked at the legs, picked the best route, and estimated the difference in time between the two routes. I got decisions right, but I was off in my estimates of the time difference (e.g. I expected a 10 second difference on a leg with a 17 second difference).

This is a sort of training I experimented with a bit years ago. The idea is to test routes, but not to find the best route but to develop a good estimate for the difference in time between two routes (or three if there are enough options). It is a fun way to train. With practice, I got much better and estimating time differences, which helps with making route choices.

My legs felt better than I expected (but some of that is because the entire session was so short).

I set a course with a lot of controls at Woodridge. The controls included all of the permanent course. Two of the permanent controls were missing. I replaced one with a control, but I didn't have a second control with me. So I replaced the other one with three bits of orange tape.

I went slowly and didn't really push at all. I walked when the hills got to me or when the vegetation was junky.

Nice day to be out.

orienteering 51:52 [4] 6.66 km (7:47 / km) +237m 6:37 / km

PTOC local event at WyCo. There was a little bit of snow on the ground. The map has a few areas that could use some work (Fritz and I went out to pick up controls and couldn't navigate to one of the controls on the white course!).

I started a few minutes after Matt Q and ran with him a bit. He seemed to be orienteering pretty well. But, then he disappeared. I don't know where he went. I looked at my map a couple of times and when I looked up he was gone. I guess he made a mistake but I don't know where he went.

Matt S was there. He only orienteers a few times a year, but he's not too terrible and he runs well. It was satisfying to beat him (if only by a little bit).

I ran in red O' pants, the pink checked O' top, and a safety-orange buff. I think Mary approved of the color combination.

orienteering 18:40 [2] 1.66 mi (11:15 / mi)

Night line O' on the West Campus sprint map. This was fun and my legs felt good. I was worried they'd feel dead. A flat course at a slow pace probably explains why my legs felt good.

There was enough snow/ice on the pavement that I had to be a bit careful to avoid slipping.

I made one mistake near the end of the course - a small parallel error in an area without many features. If I ran with a compass, I probably wouldn't have made that mistake. But, I don't run with a compass.

orienteering 15:47 [2] 2.2 km (7:09 / km) +2m 7:07 / km
10c

2 night sprint courses - rerunning sprint courses that we used over the last two years.

My legs are feeling a little bit seg. I might take tomorrow off or find some way to make it especially light on my legs.

This was the 20th day in a row with some technique training.

I had one bad mistake. I made a parallel error on the 8th control of the second course. The feature was some sort of rock wall-like feature. I ran to a parallel one and didn't realize I was wrong until I downloaded my track. That's not good. It wasn't off by much, but I should have noticed it. If not when I ran to the wrong feature, I should have noticed something was wrong when I left the control.

This is cool - something like an alternative to corn maze orienteering.

orienteering 12:15 [2] 1.8 km (6:48 / km)

This was the same course that I ran last week, but I ran it in reverse order (i.e. started at the finish circle and finished at the start triangle).

Some snow was falling and the paved areas were icy.

I made it a short day because I needed to be home in time to shovel the driveway before the KU game was on TV. I missed the first couple of minutes of the basketball game. But I saw the rest (I'd say KU played a bit like I orienteered on the first day in Georgia).

2

running 20:00 [2]

Warming up and running home. It took a while for my hands and face to feel warm. The temp wasn't so bad, but there was a bit of wind and some stinging snow.

orienteering 27:00 [2] 2.88 km (9:22 / km)

I set a course at Clinton S.P. that focused on lidar derived vegetation features. It was short and I ran slowly. My legs are tired from the weekend.

The orienteering was ok and fun. But, the lidar is 10 years old and a lot of areas that were rough open are now dense packs of cedar trees.

GAOC green. This wasn't a very good run. I was orienteering roughly - no flyt. I struggled to understand things. One of those days? I'll try again tomorrow.

I lost my magnifier near control 9. On the way home, we stopped and I tried to recreate my route leaving 9 to the spot I guessed I lost the magnifier. And I found it! Highlight of the day for me.

Also I learned about Don Ds injury from Kissy. She seemed disappointed I don't read her log daily. I'll have to read it more often, I guess.

orienteering 20:00 [1] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

A map walk on a KP map near Buford Dam. Walked 2 km with plenty of stops to look at contours and other features. It was a nice open forest. Steep hills.

I consider thus the bare minimum to keep my orienteering technique training streak going.

MTB Orienteering 24:23 [1] 3.38 mi (7:13 / mi)

Another commuter-bike street orienteering session. My legs felt a little shot after yesterday and I wanted an easy day today (and tomorrow) to get them feeling fresh again.

I left work close to 5 and it was light enough that I could read the map without extra light. It was also warm enough that I biked in gloves instead of lobster-mitts. So I carried the map and read it on the ride. Last time I did commuter-bike O' I kept the map in my pocket and only read it when I stopped.

MTB Orienteering 27:38 [1] 4.09 mi (6:45 / mi)

This was really "commuter bike orienteering" rather than MTBO.

I crew a course on an O Obrien OOM map and biked it on my way home. I carried the map in my pocket and studied it (and memorized turns) at each control. I was careful to memorize the map rather than just say "oh, that's behind the old bowling alley."

I also tried to keep an eye out for ice. There are a few places around town with some ice on the streets.

The Garmin Connect sync didn't work.I get this message:

500 Internal Error
Oops! Something went wrong, please try again later.
Feel free to contact us for help.

I was able to use the GC sync for the SMP event yesterday. I wonder if it has anything to do with using different Garmins. I haven't gotten the FR10 to work yet.

UPDATE: And today (Tuesday) the GC sync worked, so I added the track.

That's 10 days in a row with some orienteering technique. 20 more to reach 30. Since it is a "lite" version of the challenge, I can miss a day or two for a good reason if I have to.
12 PM

orienteering 49:55 [3] 4.32 mi (11:33 / mi) +180m 10:14 / mi

PTOC one hour score event at SMP. It was pretty cold (the thermometer in the car said 13F), but with just a light wind and sun it was nice for running. After running wasn't as nice.

I ran ok but never noticed control 1 on the map and so I never went there.

We had a pretty good turnout of Lawrence people.

Fun.

A training course at Rockcrusher.

Before we left Mary asked if I thought it'd be wet. I said "no" because I figured it was cold enough that everything would be frozen. I didn't really think about the fact that it was cold, but it hadn't been cold for very long. So, it was wet.

The course was ok but I went through some really junky stuff. Some of that was a choice to run in junky stuff when I'd have run a different route if it were a race.

A bit of extra jogging.

I did a night sprint course on the Burcham Park map. I didn't go to all of the controls becuase doing so would have required a bit of more-than-ankle-deep water and mud.

I also ran the new paved bike path. I'll add use the GPS track to update OSM.

I used my little Petzl headlamp. It is pretty good, but I think the batteries are a bit old and the light wasn't very bright. It was hard to read detail with the dim light.

running 15:00 [2]

A bit of a warm up and then running home.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

A night sprint line O' course on West Campus.

The biggest challenge was that a couple of minutes after I left the house the rain picked up. With temps around 40F and rain, my glasses fogged up a few times. It was kind of fun to try to figure out how best to deal with foggy glasses - a mix of strategic stops to lift up the glasses and take a very close look at the map and navigating by ignoring the details and just trying to use the buildings (which I could see pretty well despite the foggy glasses). I also had a couple of near falls when I couldn't really see what I was running on.

I drew a line O' course on a flat and mostly featureless section of the West Campus sprint map and then ran it at an easy pace.

I'll download the GPS track tomorrow to see how well I followed the line.

UPDATE: check out the track. It looks like I did a pretty good job of following the line.

My cold is not really getting worse, but not really getting better either. If I wasn't working on my 30 day challenge, I'd have taken today off. Instead, I just did a little bit.

A short training course that Mary designed for me at Clinton State Park. Fun.

I felt pretty good despite having a light cold. I was moving slowly but steadily until the last climb when I walked a bunch.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Some easy jogging, mainly on trails, after the orienteering.

I tested some bluetooth headphones and listened to 1.5 podcasts from Radio Oringen. Good stuff. I listened to the full Martin Johansson podcast and the first bit of Helena Jansson. I thought it was interesting that Helena J has done a lot of technique training at a walk (and if I remember right she said both Peter Oberg and David Andersson have done a lot of that, too).

I ended up being out and moving for over 90 minutes and climbing over 200 meters. That's good.

6 short courses at Rockcrusher.

The idea was to try to be smooth through the terrain and not thrash. That was hard because the forest is really junky in some places.

Day 2 of the challenge, but I'm feeling like I may have a cold coming on. That'd be a bummer. If it is light and I can minimize it, I'll be fine. But, if it gets heavy, then I'll need to take some days off.

running 30:00 [2]

I ended up with 157 meters of climb. That's pretty good for being out just an hour.

Note

Today was the first day of a 30 Day Challenge.

But, I'm doing a "lite" version. I'm going to try to orienteer almost every day of the next 30 days, but if I miss a day, I'm not going to stress (that's what makes it "lite"). The goal is still to get 30 days of orienteering, but it might take more than 30 days.

orienteering race 32:37 [4] *** 4.67 km (6:59 / km)

OK's annual New Year's event at Rockhaven.

Gene set the course - mass start where you had to get any 3 of the first 5 marker.

Some snow, ice, mud still left on the trails and in the terrain, but it wasn't too slippery.

We had a good turnout (25-ish), including Fletcher who was in town for the holidays. I started a little slow but caught people - Matt at control 6, then past Scott N. on the way to 7, and then got ahead of Fletcher on the way to 9. I saw a small pack heading to 9 as I headed to 10. I didn't see anyone else until I saw Tom coming from the wrong direction to 14.

Fun.
