Row, row.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogging on West Campus. It was slippery in places, even with metal spikes on the shoes. I went slowly where it was icy.

Planned to do an easy run on West Campus. But, I ended up spending a load of time shoveling snow. Not really snow but a mix of freezing rain, sleet and a bit of snow. I like shoveling snow. I don't like shoveling the junk that was on the driveway.

Note

Nice hike at Point Reyes. I met a bunch of Mary's cousins. Apparently I'd met some of them before, but I have no memory of that. I think we covered around 7 miles. Fun.

running 1:10:00 [2]

Kartlek with a karttapullautin map of Tomales Bay State Park. I wasn't sure how KP would handle the vegetation. It did very well. The trails, from OSM, were good.

The high tide meant the trail was under water at a few parts.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Warm (50+ in the morning) and with a wind from the east. Chilly (low 40s) and with a wind from the west for the trip home.

Tuesday Dec 22, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I'm getting tired of not having real winter weather. The temp for the trip home today was above 50F. That's crazy.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogging on West Campus. I felt ok after about the first 10 minutes.

PTOC red course at Blue and Grey Park. Tom Hanley set a good course - made use of the park without making it too miserable. B&G is a park where it is really easy to set a very miserable course.

I had an ok run. I had a couple of times on the middle of the leg where I got confused/uncertain. It felt like something was off with my mind when I was trying to make sense of trails. I also wasn't pushing very hard. Bill Self would probably have criticized my toughness.

We had a decent OK turnout - me, Sandy. Eric S., and Fritz.

running 40:00 [2]

Jogging on trails at Rockcrusher with the map in my hand but not really looking at it much.

I did a little training course and gradually increased the effort as I went. It was fun, except for falling down once.

I wanted to do a little bit of harder running to see how I felt and to help decide how to run tomorrow's PTOC event. I felt pretty good.

Day off. I'm tired because I didn't sleep well last night. Mary went up to NY this morning to see her Dad

Thursday Dec 17, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Even more winter-like this morning with a temp in the low 20s.

running 25:00 [2]

Jog on West Campus. Felt pretty good.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Just the work commute. Finally a little bit more like winter (around 31F in the morning and a chilly-feeling 40F on the trip home).

Tuesday Dec 15, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Warm-ish today.

running 25:00 [2]

I did an easy jog on West Campus. Still warm-ish. Jogging in shorts and a light jacket + no hat or gloves. I don't like that. It should be cold.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I slept really well last night (but I'm pretty sure I took some night-time cold medicine).

Felt better and better as the day went on.

I did a bit of a map walk at lunch. I'm working on a project to create a 1:10,000 ISOM-ish map of downtown.

Sunday Dec 13, 2015 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

Easy jog on the Rockcrusher map in a steady rain. I took plenty of walking breaks.

I didn't feel especially good physically. But getting outside and moving felt really good.

I was really tired after about 45 minutes.

PTOC night orienteering at Hodge Park.

My plan was to jog for up to 30 minutes. But at about 25 minutes, I realized I could probably clear the course and finish around 40 minutes. So, I changed my plan to jog for 30 minutes and then alternate jogging 100m/walking 100m until I was done.

I don't think I made my cold any worse.

I like the event - it made good use of the terrain and was a lot of fun.

I had two mistakes. On one leg I was reading the map for control 19-13 when I was actually running from 21. The leg is basically the same either way (along a trail a bit and then bump into the control). But I was surprised when I bumped into 19 instead of 13. It didn't actually cost me any time, but it doesn't feel good to be surprised by a control.

The other error was a brief lapse in concentration and then some confusion about a trail bend.

Work commute.

A slight setback on the cold. I had been feeling better and better everyday, but today I don't feel any better than yesterday.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I've been taking it easy all week. Sunday night my throat got sore and I felt a 7-10 day cold coming on. But, I seem to have fought it off by resting a lot and sucking on lots of zinc tablets. I'm not 100 percent, but I don't seem to have the cold that I feared.

Note

I read this on AP:

JWOC is a set of races under pressure. That is what is being tested. Not only performing the skill of orienteering, but performing it under pressure. Therefore, the qualification process should test the same. It should not be a test of who can blog the best, petition the best, or race the best in non pressure situations, but actually race the best under pressure.

I think almost everyone disagrees with me about this, but I think that it is unnecessary and actually not beneficial to view JWOC (or WOC for that matter) as races under pressure. It is better to view those races as "no different from a local race."

If you tell people something is pressure packed, you stress them. If you tell them that it isn't actually different than a local race, you can help them develop the tools to come to a race calm and prepared.

The way to get people to perform best when it matters is to help them learn that "when it matters" isn't actually different than when it doesn't matter.

That's just my way of viewing the world. I think most people disagree with me.

Note

I woke up in the middle of the night Saturday night with a bit of scratchy throat. It got worse yesterday. It got a little better today. I'm going to give it some rest and take things very easy and hope this little illness goes by quickly.

Some orienteering practice at the arboretum in Lexington. The map was OSM and KP using the Lidar data that Cedarcreek got the State of KY to make available.

Fun and the map was enough to make it interesting.

Work commute. I skipped the Trailhawks hill workout. Partly I'm lazy and partly I need to do some laundry and organizing for upcoming travel to Summer and Sila's wedding.

I drove to work. I was planning to bike, but Mary called just after she left for work and warned me that there was some ice. She was right. I don't bike when there is ice on the streets.

After work I did a short O' course (running with a headlamp) on my new map of the neighborhood and Holcom Park. Fun. I found a couple of things to tweak on the map.

I was thinking I might start 2016 with a 30-day challenge. If I do that, I'll probably use the map once a week or so.
