cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Today was the last day of field work for the external quality review of my office. Nice to be done.

1

running 35:00 [2]

Jogging around on West Campus. Felt ok, probably because the temps weren't too terrible.

My right calf is a bit sore. I thought I just bruised it when I crashed my MTB on the river trail on Sunday. But maybe I strained the muscle a bit, too.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. In the morning the temp was 70F and a light, cool rain was falling. It felt wonderful.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

I probably should have taken advantage of relatively comfortable weather (mid 80s) and gone for a run.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Hot and humid for the trip home. I mowed when I got home and was dripping sweat.

This is going to be a low week. I've got bunches of stuff going on at work and Mary and I are heading up to Lincoln, NE, on Friday afternoon for her next race.

Checking that the controls were still standing for Gene's course at the Sunflower State Games in Gage Park. Also some time for picking up some controls.

Super sweaty even at 7:30 a.m. But, cloudy and not so hot. Rain threatened but only fell for a few minutes. Late starters got wet from the sprinklers in the rose garden which must be on some sort of timer.

Fun. We should try to do a bit more to get attendance next year.

running 25:00 [2]

I managed to get myself out early (6:30) and shuffled around on West Campus. Dew point 70, temp 76.

MTB cycling 2:05:00 [1]

Watched the liv coverage of TDF and then went for a bike ride on roads/gravel/single track. It was hot (dew point 79 and temp in mid 80s). I kept the pace easy.

On the river trails I stopped a couple of times to make a few notes on the map. Then I lost my pen and didn't make any more notes.

The return trail from the Mud Creek cutoff and back has a few fallen trees. I rounded a corner and saw a tree over the trail and started to break.I didn't notice the little fallen tree beside the trail that my right pedal hit. I went down, not hard, but I hit my calf on something. It might have been the branch or maybe the pedal. It is a little sore, but seems to be ok.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I'd planned to go for an easy 20 minute jog when I got home. But when I got home the temp was 97F with a 80F dewpoint (for a "heat index" of 118F).

Instead of a run, I sat in front of a fan and then took a cool shower.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp was 67F when I left this morning. It felt wonderful.

running 30:00 [2]

Another jog on West Campus. Felt pretty good (but moving slowly).

Yesterday I was chased by an aggressive Red-winged Blackbird. I decided to return to the same area and show that bird that I wasn't afraid of him. But, he didn't seem to be around tonight.

Easy jog on West Campus. Not especially hot out. That was nice.

Monday Jul 20, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Lots of rain last night and the streets were wet, but no rain during the commute.

When I got home I mowed and did some weeding. It was humid and hot, but not as humid and hot as on the weekend.

MTB on the roads - some paved, some gravel.

I printed out a 1:40,000 open orienteering map and drew a course. It wasn't really MTBO practice, more just something to sketch out a general route and to have a few points to find along the way.

The weather was similar to yesterday, but it must have been a couple of degrees cooler and that made a big difference. Just like yesterday, the sun came out the last 15 minutes or so and that made things uncomfortable. Early in the ride it sprinkled for a few minutes.

Longish MTB ride on the roads.

I watched the live TDF coverage and hoped that the temp wouldn't be too terrible by the time I got out on the roads. That worked pretty well. It was really muggy, but cloudy until the last 15 minutes of the ride. When the sun came out, the level of discomfort shot up. But I was nearly home, so it was no problem.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

River trails after work. The far end is still closed from all of the rain. The return from the Mud Creek cutoff was fine. There was one very short muddy area and there were a number of new downed trees. On the way out I stopped and made some mapping notes. That kept the pace gentle.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Today was the annual downtown sidewalk sale. That meant lots of traffic downtown early in the morning. Not just lots of traffic, but lots of people driving and paying attention to parking spaces instead of driving.

running 20:00 [2]

Planned to do 35 minutes. After 10 minutes the heat was getting to me. I turned around and slogged home.

When I got home today I mowed.

Work commute.

The trip home was interesting. I checked the temp when I left work - 98F. Within two blocks it began to rain. The rain picked up as I went but it didn't really cool things off much. When I got home the temp was 92F. Usually when a storm pops up like that the temp drops a bunch and it is very refreshing. Today it was just wet and hot.

The rain was enough to keep me from mowing the lawn when I got home.

running 30:00 [1]

Jogging around at the Arbo putting out controls for today's event. At 7 a.m. it was already uncomfortable. Temp was ok (uppers 70s) but it was warming up quickly and the humidity was not pleasant (dew point was 70).

We had a decent turnout (23 starts) with a good bunch of first timers (I think 12). As best I can tell, everyone went home with a good experience.

The biggest surprise was that Grafton Potter was there! He has retired and is moving to NTOA land. Not quite as big a surprise was that Fritz was there.

Big thanks to the early helpers - Marv, Gene and Sandy. Marv especially had to get up early and drive an hour to help (and I think Marv had to sacrifice Sunday Pancake Day at his house).

Also, thanks to everyone who helped pick up markers. I know Paul and Matt did a lot of the marker pickup . I think Dick, Reta and Gene also picked up some markers and/or helped take things down.

Note

As an aside...I don't understand how the NFL can't just get its act together and behave decently.

"Though the Washington team president, Bruce Allen, told the media the organization is prepared to appeal the ruling all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court."

I did 4 short MTBO courses on a map of the arboretum. I tweaked the existing map to make it roughly MTBO standard, including changing the scale to 1:10,000. The courses were short, taking about 7-8 minutes per course. I rested for a minute between courses.

There were a few wet spots on the mowed paths.

This was a blast. I got a bit tired and overheated (summer is back). I pushed the effort a little more on the last little course and felt really strange when I finished. I moved into the shade and rested a little bit, then felt better.

I don't know if we could get permission to use the Arbo for a MTBO event. It is an interesting, but very small, area. With map changes it would be a good venue for a small event and it'd be a lot more interesting orienteering than the river trails.

This very light week has been a success. My left knee which had been feeling strange, feels normal.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute in wonderfully cool temps.

On the way home a red tailed hawk swooped right above me and grabbed something in the deep grass next to the road (mouse? bunny?).

Rain started to fall on me on West Campus but then stopped soon after I got home and I was able to get the lawn mowed.

I also did some stuff to get ready for Sunday's park orienteering at the arboretum.

Note

I planned a MTB ride after work. So I put my bike in my car and drove to work. The forecast didn't look great, but I kept an eye on the sky and the radar and things looked possible. But I got out of a meeting at 4:45 and the rain was starting to fall. So I skipped the after work MTB ride.

At 5:15 a tornado warning was issued for the river trails, so it was probably a good idea not to be out there (not just to avoid the muddy trails):

running 1:05:00 [2]

On the trails at Clnton State Park.

I watched the live coverage of the TDF and got out a bit later than would be smart. I felt good for about 30 minutes, then the heat and humidity started to be a pain. I slowed down a bit and walked any steep bit of uphill (and probably some not steep bits of uphill).

I carred the karttapullautin map and looked at it occassionally. I wonder when the 2015 lidar will be available.

Did some yard work when I got home. After a bit I started feeling really cruddy. I think I was just dehydrated/hungry. I drank some sport drink and sat in the A.C. for a while and then felt fine.

MTB on roads, levee and some single track.

I watched the live coverage of the TDF before I went and I was worried it'd be hot. But, it wasn't.

A course on the new and improved (but not yet finished) MTBO map of the river trails. I had a couple of booms when I lost track of exactly where I was and went past the control location. If there had been actual controls, it wouldn't have mattered, but without controls I had to read some of the trail bends and other features to make sure I was in the right spot.

Fun.

Checking some legs and points and the map at the arboretum for the July 12 event. I managed to get a ~2.5 km course in an area of the map that is a little less than 500m x 500m.

The mowed paths through the deep grass are nice. Here's a little preview of the terrain: https://instagram.com/p/4rmpFOQ0wp/?taken-by=okans...

I biked on the river trails after work. The trails were in great condition. The weather was hot and humid to start, but when a big storm popped up to the east the humidity dropped. I guess the storm brought a tornado to Lees Summit. See: https://twitter.com/NWSKansasCity/status/616570225...

The Mud Creek end of the trail is still closed. The dip just past the cutoff was still filled with water.

I had the karttapullautin + GPS trails with me and looked at a few things.

My left knee felt a little strange during the day, but was fine biking and afterwards.
