cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. On the way home I was nearly cut off by a goof ball driving along Jayhawk Blvd while using a smart phone.

Coincidentally, the NTSB had a day long conference on distracted driving today.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogging around on West Campus a bit. It felt uncomfortably hot.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Travel day from Summer and Sila's house to Lawrence. Then, row, row.

orienteering race 43:49 [4] ***

Middle green course at Carter Caves. This was kind of a strange run. I had a few swings but no control misses. I also just wasn't working very hard. I'm not sure why, just lazy I guess. But it was a lot of fun.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up. Kind of chilly.

orienteering race 1:15:00 [4] ***

Long M50 green course. Fun. I didn't move well, but I was steady. I walked the hills. I will need more analysis but my initial guess is I did 2 bad route choices. The controls were all clean.

My right leg wasn't normal, but didn't get worse.

My course didn't go through the cave/natural bridge. That was a bit disappointing.

Warm up jog.

orienteering race 23:06 [4] ***

Sprint orienteering at Moorehead State campus. Fun course with lots of controls. I almost got trapped by an uncrossable wall under the line between two controls but a quick second look saved me from that.

Near the end I did something to my right leg - hope it'll be ok for the rest of the weekend.

cycling 55:00 [1]

Work commute plus a bit (related to the cleaner locking us out of our house).

Busy evening with laundry, cooking dinner and packing.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I listened to a strange podcast at my desk today:

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/sound...

I've been listening to a few sound-art recordings/podcasts. They can be really interesting. They can also be kind of strange.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Note

I also discovered that yesterday was the 30th anniversary of one of my all time favorite movies:

running 20:00 [2]

Putting out the last few markers at Woodridge.

orienteering race 51:39 [4] *** 5.5 km (9:23 / km)

Red course that Gene set at Woodridge. This was physically pretty tough (my watch showed 183 meters of climb). It didn't help that I slept poorly last night and the weather was warm and sunny. It also didn't help that I didn't seem to have motivation to push.

running 40:00 [2]

Picking up controls. I was tired. I was slow.

I made it back in time to get home soon after the basketball game (KU-WSU) started. Not shocked (pun intentional) that KU lost, but shocked that they were so far out of it.

running 50:00 [2]

Putting out controls for tomorrow's event at Woodridge. Mary, Kevin/Steph, and Grace helped. It wasn't much work.

As we were getting ready to head out, one of the campers dropped by and asked if we were orienteering. She'd orienteered once - at the PTOC event at Hodge Park a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, she wouldn't be around for tomorrow's event, but I gave her a couple of Woodridge maps. Maybe she'll walk around an look at the map a bit.

I ran through an area that had been recently burned. Fortunately, my new shoes didn't get ash-coated.

Work commute.

I think some new O' shoes arrived in the mail today. I'd better go open the box.

running 25:00 [2]

A short jog in a light rain on West Campus. I met Kevin as he was leaving work and I jogged along with him (he was on his bike) for a ways. We were chatting about various ideas for MTBO in the area.

I have more ideas than energy. But, I'm definitely thinking of a few more MTBO events/experiments this year.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Light rain began just as I left the house. The rain was still light when I started to come home, but it picked up after about half the trip. The temp was also a bit chilly (40F) for the trip home and one of my hands got cold.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

I have this idea that I'm going to get back to doing this once or twice a week.

Tuesday Mar 17, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Much more comfortable temps today.

running 30:00 [2]

An easy jog on the trails on West Campus. Felt ok, but I was really moving slowly.

1

Monday Mar 16, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp was in the 80s this afternoon. Not fun.

Sunday Mar 15, 2015 #

running 2:00:00 [2]

I did a long, slow trail run with a map in my hand. I started on the Rockcrusher map, headed on to Rockhaven, and then returned to Rockcrusher. The trails were a bit lumpy, but nothing like last weekend.

The temp was warm (upper 60s) and the sun felt hot.

Note

Mary and I walked around the Fitch area (a KU biology study area east of where Mom used to live). I've been aware of the area for a long time, but never actually visited before. It is a nice place for a hike.

I prepared a quick lidar base map, so we had something to look at as we hiked.

I mean to bring my recorder, but left it in the car. That's too bad as there were some interesting sounds out there.

Jogging on the trails.

An O' training course at the Perry Bike trails. I drifted off line once. I had a few lapses of concentration. I need to work on catching those lapses quickly.

Warm and sunny. I miss cold weather.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

The plan was to leave work a bit early today, get in a 30 minute jog, and then watch KU basketball. But, I didn't leave work early. I decided to pick basketball over a jog. Lazy.

cycling 50:00 [1]

Work commute. Warm - above 70, I'd say - for the trip home. I'm probably one of the few people around who would prefer colder weather.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. My legs felt tired in the morning.

1

Sunday Mar 8, 2015 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

Jogging around at Rockhaven looking at the map occasionally ad running off trail occasionally.

I explored the big flat and dark green area on the map (dense cedars) and discovered even more clearing work done recently. I don't know who would do that. I also don't know why. But, it opens up some terrain and that's a good think.

My legs were tired.

Ft Leavenworth Adventure Outdoor Adventures urban course at Ft Lev. I did the medium course rather than the long or the score course because Mary and I planned to do both the Ft Lev and PTOC orienteering events today.

I need to do some more remote mapping to improve the map.

One fun stretch of the course was on the way to 5. There was one of those mobile signs with radar that shows cars as they go by how fast they are moving. It also works on runners. It was fun to push the pace a bit and watch the speed tick up (I hit 11 mph according to the sign).

This was also our first visit to the post with the new security. You first go to a different gate and they run an NCIC criminal check. If you're a felon I don't think they let you on the post. If you've got a warrant, they arrest you on the spot. We made it through. I wonder what they'd have done if we had Ulrik with us?

orienteering race 1:13:40 [3] *** 8.22 km (8:58 / km) +110m 8:24 / km

PTOC event at Hodge Park. I'd never orienteered there before. The woods are thick. Thick like we don't have much of around here. But, the woods aren't especially thorny, so that was ok.

The trails were soft, stick-to-your-shoes mud on a layer of frozen mud. The trails were not much fun to run on.

I got tired out there and didn't have much motivation/energy to push.

The course was advertised as 5.9 km. My GPS shows 8.2. I don't think I ran that far out of the way. My km time would be slow (mud + super thick + warm + tired), but I'm wondering if the course was really a little bit longer than 5.9.

Work commute.

Another strange, crazy, interesting day at the office. One thing I've learned is that I see the world completely differently than most of the people I work around.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Crazy, strange day at work. I got home a bit later than I'd planned and decided not to go out for a jog.

The highlight of the trip home was looking up and seeing a Red Tailed Hawk about 40 meters ahead of me and flying straight towards me. The hawk ended up swerving about 2-3 meters before it would have flown right into my face. Strange and cool.

Wednesday Mar 4, 2015 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was snowing for the trip to work. The were just starting to get slick by the time I arrived at the office. Things were fine for the trip home (and the steady north wind was blowing me home).

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on West Campus. I stepped on a thorn that went through the bottom of my shoe and a little bit into my heal. As far as Kansas thorns go it was nothing. But it was enough to stop me and pull the thorn out of the sole of the shoe while my fingers got cold.

Work commute. I had a long and strange day at work.

Sunday Mar 1, 2015 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

I jogged at Rockcrusher. I put out some mini markers for a training course. A lot of the snow had melted by the time I got out to run.

I also watch a lot of xc skiing on TV. I got up early and watched the entire 50K live and then watched the entire 30K on replay from yesterday (I'd seen the last 8K or so of that race).

Also, this Swedish sport news feature on Rune Haraldsson is cool:
