Checking some control locations for the Rockhaven event. I noticed that a few of the tapes I put out before have disappeared. That surprised me.

It was cool and wet with the temp 38F at the start and 36F at the end. Rain fell steadily, but lightly. The wind was light. I was nice for running.

running 50:00 [2]

Jogging around and looking at a few things on the map. Also checking to see that some of the mini makers were still in place. I checked four of the 5 mini marker and they were all still in place.

Work commute. The weather changed and it was chilly and windy.

running 25:00 [2]

A short jog on West Campus. I took it a little easy to rest the left calf. It felt ok.

Work commute. The same as yesterday weather-wise.

running 25:00 [2]

My calf felt almost normal during the day, so I decided an easy jog would be ok. It was. I took it easy - shuffling along and avoiding any hills. It felt ok. I could tell I wasn't quite running normally, but after running the calf feels good.

Work commute. 20sF for the trip to work, 60F+ for the trip home.

My left calf felt tight all day.

Note

My left calf felt tight all last night - enough that I had some difficulty sleeping. So, I didn't run today. Instead, I did an easy map hike at Rockhaven. When I'm in the woods, I'm usually either mapping, checking control locations or running courses. An unstructured map hike was nice. I used to do that a lot - walking around and looking at how things were mapped and trying to understand maps and the terrain. But I haven't done that recently. I should do more map hikes.

I put out some tapes for the event at Rockhaven. Warm out there today.

I also made a couple of notes about things to tweak a bit on the map.

Night score O' at Clinton Overlook. I thought I'd cleared the course, but I never noticed 41 on the map.

I really like night orienteering, even when it involves going through some junky forest.

My left calf was tight. It was tight at the start. I must have done something to it earlier in the day (either running at Rockhaven or watching basketball on TV).

Note

The President is speaking tomorrow at KU at the Anschutz Pavilion (or whatever it is called). That's on the Daisy Hill sprint map, across the street from the Robinson Gym sprint map, within about 150 meters of the edge of the Mt Oread sprint map, and about half a mile from the West Campus sprint map.

Note

This is cool. Google Street View covers a lot of the sidewalks on the KU campus and here is a combination of the orienteering and street view:

GAOC red course day 2.

I was a bit tired from yesterday and my orienteering was a bit rough. I had some trouble with controls 7 and 8 where the area just didn't match what I'd expected. If it weren't so far from the finish, I'd have gone back out to take a look. The last couple of km was a different sort of orienteering than we'd had up to that point. That was a nice bit of variety.

The course crossed a main road twice. You had up to 2 minutes to make the crossing and your time would be deducted. I wasn't sure if it'd make sense to rest and take the entire two minutes. I decided that I'd just walk/jog across the road and get going rather than actually stop and rest. On the 2nd crossing I probably should have taken a more careful look at the next leg since I missed it.

One of the highlights of the GAOC events is that there are so many young people competing. I think this is the Henry County HS team marching through the event site.

GAOC at Red Top Mountain. Red course in M45.

Decent run but in pleasant terrain. The course started in a less hilly area before moving to some bigger hills. I got tired on the hills.

Clean run. I think a lot of people had clean runs with the visibility and runability being so good. Not sure I got all of the route choices right.

Work commute. On the way home a couple of people on West Campus stopped me. They were trying to find the bus stop for the K10 connector and the last bus of the day was 6 p.m. I gave them basic directions and then biked ahead, confirmed the directions, biked back to find them, and made sure they were still on right track. They had enough time to get there, so I hope they didn't miss the bus. I wonder who these two were. Both had some sort of accent, the young man looked like about the right age for a college student. The woman was about the right age for his parent.

running 25:00 [2]

Short headlamp run on West Campus. Felt ok.

Also, I found Tilford's blog has a nice set of photos from a cyclocross race in Kansas in 1974. Check out MeanGene on the cover of Bicycling Magazine:

A long and not very fun day at work. I was stressed after and actually had trouble sleeping. That doesn't happen very often.

running 20:00 [2]

Short run after work.

When I woke up this morning I saw some sort of frozen precip on the neighborhood streets and decided to drive to work. I couldn't tell if I was being prudent of lazy. When the drive at City Hall to the bike parking was super slick icy I realized I was prudent.

orienteering race 46:37 [4] *** 6.94 km (6:43 / km)

Score O by PTOC at SMP.

I thought we had 45 minutes and stressed a bit about being 1:37 over time and getting a penalty. But it turns out we had an hour and I'd finished in plenty of time. The start was at 12:45 and the one hour finish was 1:45. I think my brain just heard 45.

I lost time at 14. I was using the top of the reentrant SW of the control circle (you can see the very top of that reentrant) and counting on the flag to be at the high ground on the broad spur. I ended up missing it, but I think it might be just a litte off (my QR track shows that I slowed and punched just barely outside of the control circle to the east). You can't really count on the GPS track to be accurate enough and the control feature is pretty vague, so I wouldn't conclude it wasn't right.

With Mary in NY, I carpooled with Sandy and Blair. That was nice - two friendly interesting people (and Blair has a nice car!).

Checking some control locations for the February event at Rockhaven, pulling the mini-markers from "Santa's Course" and setting mini-markers for a new practice course.

I felt off. My legs felt like I had no strength in them. I was also a bit sleepy feeling. I could tell that I wasn't mentally very strong either - I kept thinking "the woods here are crappy." But they aren't really crappy, just normal Clinton Lake southside terrain.

I fell a couple of times. Once was a bit awkward. My foot got caught on something and I tumbled forward. My right quad landed on a log that was maybe knee high. My right shoulder did something strange, too. I'm a bit sore but not injured, just some discomfort.

I quickly designed a course to explore a bit and test some ideas at Rockhaven. I the jogged around the course. Fun.

The temp was a chilly 18F at the end and there was a steady NW wind that made things a bit cold on the north slopes near the lake. But the sun was out and I was dressed correctly.

I ended up with >200 meters of climb.

running 1:30:00 [2]

The running portion of today's run/map session at Rockhaven. I did some mapping of some of the places I'd avoided because they are so junky. Nice weather for running - near 40F with no wind and cloudy skies. The wintry mix is still in the forecast but hasn't arrived yet.

I did a good bit of climbing and some time off trails.

Picking up the last four controls at Rockcrusher. Legs felt ok but weren't really moving well.

Forecast calls for a wintry mix tonight/tomorrow. It'd be nice if we get enough snow to shuffle around on the skis.
