cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp was a chilly 14 in the a.m. but the wind made it feel a bit colder. The trip home was with a tail wind.

running 20:00 [2]

A short run on West Campus and home in time to watch the basketball game. The wind was cold.

I set a course at Rockhaven that was intended to be hilly. The points were all on trails and the idea was to run on trails. Except for maybe 500 meters, I stuck to trails.

The pace was relaxed and I took the hills at an easy jog. I'd expected to have to walk some of the hills, but was able to maintain a slow jog.

Fun and I felt pretty good.

Here is a bit of the course:

running 20:00 [2]

Warming up with Gene and then a bit after I finished. After I finished I jogged out to the last control to get a photo of Gene at the control. But he was close enough behind me that I wouldn't have made it and he took a straight route to the finish while I jogged the trail and I didn't see him.

Lunch at El Potro on 31st Street was good.

Mary has a course at Clinton that she's run several times and I ran it today. We used the contours + trails map. Mostly that was good and interesting, but at one point I would have liked to know where a good route through a bunch of dense cedars and saplings was.

I don't think I've ever seen such a still day at Clinton. The lake was smooth.

My legs didn't feel especially good and I took things pretty slowly.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Easy run, mostly on the trails, at Rockcrusher. Mary wants to use a section of the map that includes a large field that hasn't been fieldchecked, so I spent a few minutes and sketched in the field - mostly it's rough open and the edges show up in the lidar and in photos.

running 20:00 [2]

Short jog on West Campus. I left work a little early (4:30) and got in a short run before it got dark.

running 1:40:00 [2]

Jogging at Rockhaven with the map in my hand. I spent most of the time on trails. The trails are a bit muddy in places. I felt especially slow on the hills.

At Rockhaven putting out some mini markers for a practice course. Some of the forest is a bit rough.

Some running on the trails.

Friday Dec 19, 2014 #

running 20:00 [2]

Short headlamp jog on West Campus. I've been feeling strange for the last two days. I don't think I'm sick or getting sick, but I'm not feeling normal either. I'm guessing (hoping) that another good night of sleep will make everything normal.

Work commute.

running 50:00 [2]

Slow headlamp jog on West Campus. I included one trip up Ulrik's hill. I was hoping the snow would start falling. It didn't.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Just the work commute. Windy out there today.

Monday Dec 15, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The heavy rain stopped about 5 minutes before I left the house to go to work. It was warm (50s) and a south wind blew me to the office. The trip home was different. The temp had fallen to mid 30s and a mix of rain with a little bit of sleet fell. I had a northwest wind that mostly was a tailwind.

Sunday Dec 14, 2014 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Kartlek at Rockhaven + some trail running. I also made a couple of quick stops to add notes to the map.

The temp was warm - low 60s.

I also did about 30 minutes of mapping - mostly checking some stream beds.

3

Saturday Dec 13, 2014 #

running 1:35:00 [2]

Trail run at Rockhaven with some time off trail. I also spent some extra time making a few mapping notes. I explored at the east end of the section I'm planning to map. I also went into the big dark green area and discovered that someone has cleared some areas within the dark green. I might go back and map all of the rides and clearings within the dark green. Or I might just leave it dark green and never set foot in the area again.

I listened to Radio Oringen's podcast with Gunilla Svard for some of the run.

Thursday Dec 11, 2014 #

running 55:00 [2]

Headlamp jog on West Campus, including a trip up Ulrik's Hill. Time went by quickly and I felt pretty good (which almost always means I was moving slowly).

1

Wednesday Dec 10, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The trip home was mentally stressful because the pavement was a bit wet and the temp was around freezing. I had a pretty uncomfortable crash a few years ago in similar conditions. I made it home and didn't fall down.

running 20:00 [2]

Short run on West Campus. I cut the run short so I could make it home and sit in front of the TV watching the KU game.

Just the work commute and nothing more. Yesterday I had an earned day off, today was just laziness.

Sunday Dec 7, 2014 #

running 1:40:00 [2]

A long easy jog at Rockhaven. I was out for 2:15, but took a number of stops to make a few notes on the map.

About half of the run was in a light rain.

Near the end I stepped on a thorn that went through the sole of my shoe and into my foot. I felt it immediately and managed to get down on the ground without stepping on the thorn again (kind of a slow motion rolling fall to the muddy ground). The thorn was relatively easy to remove through the sole of the shoe and I don't think the thorn went more than about 1/4 inch into my foot. The Inov-8 x-talons are great shoes, but they have soles that are fairly soft and don't protect you from nail like thorns. It happened at the very end of the run and I walked the last bit back to the car.

Also, I'm pretty sure I saw a Merlin. It flew at me in the field near where I'd parked. I got a good look at it. The "birds near me" app on my phone has a Merlin siting at Clinton, but I've never seen one before.

Note

About 2 hours in the afternoon fieldchecking at Rockhaven. Most of the work was mapping some of the rocks. It felt like it went pretty well and the weather was nice for mapping.

PTOC night score at Bonner Park. Lots of controls and lots of open and easy running (the park is mostly open grassy areas). My hands felt cold for the first 8-10 minutes, but then everything was fine. The temp, upper 30s with light wind, was very nice for running.

Ate at Arthur Bryant's with Pete and Clementine after the run. That was fun as I hadn't seen them in a while. Clementine has a nice headlamp.

Easy jog on West Campus.

I've been busy the last two days with the MAIAF meeting in KC (a joint meeting with the SEIAF and the SWIAF).

Note

Had a house guest...Swampfox. Stayed up too late talking about mapping (among other things) and then spent a bunch of time talking about local government at breakfast.

I was at the CC meeting last night. One thing that was interesting was a report on the sharp decrease in workers compensation costs for trash collection that looks to be related to beginning to use more automation to collect household trash. The City Manager made a point of the change to more automation being approved by the City Commission, implemented by Public Works, and based on a recommendation from a task force. What as interesting, to me, was that the City Manager didn't say a word about the fact that all of this started with my work which made the initial recommendation.

It is interesting to me that a manager can't or won't recognize the audit function.
