running 1:00:00 intensity: (45:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

Trail run at Clinton. I did 15 minutes at an honest effort as 70/20s. I don't think I was actually going fast, but I was working fairly hard. The weather was nice again - mid 80s without much humidity.

On the way to Clinton I was listening to a bit of AM talk radio on Ebola. Getting information about viruses and public health from talk radio is like getting information about weather by watching Sharknado.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Nice weather once again.

running 20:00 [2]

Grocery shopping run...I felt MUCH better than I did yesterday.

I also discovered that the store sells powdered peanut butter. I didn't buy any.

Work commute.

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. The weather was nice, but I felt (and was) slow. I didn't feel good at all.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Weather was comfortable. It is remarkable how nice weather makes the legs feel good.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging around to put out and retrieve controls at Gage Park.

I jogged through the course to double check that nothing had disappeared and to wake up the SI units. It started to feel unpleasant due to the weather.

We had a decent turnout for the Sunflower Games - a few more entrants than last year. Mary rounded up a lot of helpers and it seems like the organization went well.

Afterwards a group of PTOCers and OKers got lunch back in Larwence at Ingredient where we were joined by Bruce, Diane and Eric (and their dog) for lunch.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up and then after the race to check out a couple of parts of the map.

Sprint "poker" orienteering by Fort Leavenworth Adventure. They'd been using a USGS map, but after the last event out there I dug out the lidar contours and some air photos and I've created a 1:15,000 "adventure race" map. Today's event was on an enlarged section of that map.

I won by a minute or so ahead of Schoen (sp?). He's a little younger than me and a bit faster runner.

Weather was not so nice (except that the sun was behind clouds). I got up at 6:10 and it was already 78F.

I really like what Ft Lev Adventures does with their events. They are low key and really aimed at everyone being successful and having fun. And they have chocolate milk at the finish. They had something like 30 starters today, mostly families in groups.

The built up part of Fort Leavenworth would make a good sprint area with a ISSOM map. The terrain isn't super interesting, but there's enough going on that it would be fun. Traffic is not really a problem because there isn't a lot of traffic, drivers are used to seeing lots of people out jogging, and everyone drives at a reasonable speed.

Note

Brutal weather today. I skipped any exercise. But mowed the lawn, pulled some weeds and watered some plants.

I also spent some time comparing the JWOC sprint map with this map:

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The weather was pretty reasonable. But heat + humidity should be back tomorrow.

running 50:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton. Mid 80s and low humidity and in the shade on the trails it was nice. I saw a snake. I also saw someone running in those 5-finger shoes.

running 20:00 [2]

Feeling almost jet-lagged today. But, I managed to get out and shuffle around a bit. It felt quite good. I've got a new pair of shoes that are more comfortable on roads or firm trails than the x-talons that I usually run in. That makes it a bit easier. I should probably make a point of having a couple of pairs of running shoes at all times.

Also, fun to see the Oringen video from Mattias Gothberg from yesterday's race:

Note

CC meeting tonight (and it looks long and I'm at the end of the agenda). No training. I even drove to work. But, that's also not a bad thing because the weather is misserable (100F with a heat index of 110 at 7 p.m.).

Monday Jul 21, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Hot and humid. The "heat index" was 103F when I left work. Instead of running, I took a cold shower.

This is cool video from the Oringen MTB Orienteering (filmed by Henrik Gothberg's son Mattias):

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

MTB on roads and the levee to/from the trail head. The trip home was into a bit of a headwind.

MTB cycling 1:30:00 [1]

On the river trails. In the first minute or so I nearly crashed when the front wheel lost traction on a sandy curve.

Still nice weather, but the heat is coming back.

I was surprised that I only saw a few other on the trail on bikes. I saw more runners.

Here is Mud Creek (in case Magnus wants to check the water level):

And here is some of the single track:

At some point during the ride I started thinking how nice it'd be to stop at La Prima Tazza for an iced mocha Florentine. I didn't do that, but I think I can replicate it at home (basically some chocolate flavor, foamed milk, a shot of espresso and ice).

running 1:30:00 [2]

Running on the trails at Clinton. The weather is starting to get warmer again (and I got out the door late because I watched the TDF coverage). But I took it easy and it wasn't too terrible.

Friday Jul 18, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

After a really nice week of weather it is expected to get more normal this weekend.

Thursday Jul 17, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Today was the annual downtown sidewalk sale. That means there are a lot of crazy drivers around. I survived.

running 50:00 [2]

Easy jog on the trails at Clinton. I carried the map and read it a few times. Mostly I just jogged and let my mind wander.

Note

"After they announced the Sprint would be in Venice some years ago, it was easy to put this as my biggest goal. Sprint is still the 'easiest' discipline to prepare from home (still Belgium) in combination with distance running. The Qualification in Burano went like planned, with a victory in HEAT 3, putting me as last starter in the Final. I felt strong and in control, but I missed a small alley to control 7, losing 20 seconds and probably a medal. Still, my race after that was strong enough, finishing 7th in the world (a new PB both for myself and Belgium)."

- Yannick Michiels

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I'd thought about going for a run, but my legs felt strange all day.

On the trip home, I biked through an area where I'm making a little training/sprint map. I wanted to check out a few things I'd seen on the base map.

1

Note

"How did we in Denmark get such succes on the sprint in Venice. It's very simple. We were best prepared. Tue had drawn a very detailed map of the entire area so we have made a lot of courses and legs on that map. Together with this and a lot of hours spent on google streetview we had confidence that we could handle whatever the course setter gave us. The only thing that could surprise us was fences which we knew there would be. So the job was to scan the route that we knew would be best for fences."

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. We had a record low last night (54F) and it felt very pleasant to bike to work and feel comfortable (even if I'd prefer cooler).

running 50:00 [2]

Slow jog on the trails at Clinton. My legs felt slow, but the temps were so comfortable (low 70s in July!).

Part of the run was listening to another podcast, this one with an interview with Bengt Skott. He had some interesting comments about covering orienteering on the radio.

Sunday Jul 13, 2014 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Watched the end of the TDF stage and then got going. That meant it was pretty warm when I was running. I parked at the beach and ran the trails. "Ran" in this case meant slowly jogged and walked a bit.

Some spider webs on the trail and dripping humidity.

I carried a good bit of water (~1.5 liters) and had another bottle in the car, but I still got home feeling dehyrdated.

MTB cycling 1:05:00 [1]

MTB to/from a park shelter in Clinton. I was dragging on the trip home.

running 1:30:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton with the map but not paying much attention to it. I listened to a couple of podcasts, including the Skogssport interview with the Danes (third time listening and I think I'm up to understanding about 65 percent of the Danish).

I moved slowly and it was a bit hot and unpleasant, especially for the last 15 minutes or so.

I skipped today's PTOC event in KC. I chose watching the WOC relay over a sprint O' in a new park.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Pleasant temps in the morning.

running 45:00 [2]

Jogging on the trails at Clinton. Mostly nice and hot but not too terrible. I listened to some podcasts - interview with Lena Eliasson and then an interview with the Danish national team leader and Maja Alm. I've listened to the podcast with the Danes twice. I think I've managed to follow about 45-50 percent of what they say.

Sunflower had some sort of trail running clinic at Clinton. They had shoes to test. MeanGene and Blair were there and we chatted a bit.

Wednesday Jul 9, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Decided to do nothing but watch the TDF in the evening (and do some laundry).

Note

"One thing I like about the sprint is that a lot of the technical training can be done at home. In general looking at sprint-courses and learn how to see the fastest (and often shortest) routechoice in high speed is an important skill. But also looking at old maps from the embargoed area, and if there is no old map, maybe make your own and make courses, so you learn how to navigate in excactly this area."

--Tue Lassen

running 45:00 [2]

Jogging on the trails at Clinton. I carried a map (the in-progress 1:10000 map of Clinton) and looked at it once in a while.

Not so humid after last night's storm.

Mary and I did the Trailnerds "pychopathic" 5K at Wyandotte. The course was short but tough and all on single track horse trail after the first 50 meters or so. The course was out and back and on the return trip I was meeting runners and that took a little extra enegry and concentration.

Warm (80) and humid (70 dew point) so it was just kind of difficult to feel good.

Fun.

3

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging to check out the trail and see if they'd cut back the vegetation along the sides of the trails (they had) and then a bit of a warm up jog.

Saturday Jul 5, 2014 #

Note

My prediction system was a bit rough for today's sprint qualifications. The forecast was;

Ross S 26th
Giacomo B 28th
Ethan C 28th

Ali C 11th
Sam S 16th
Tori B 22nd

It worked (+/- 1 place) for Samantha and Ethan; but not so well for Giacomo, Ali and Tori. I think the system is a bit tough on Tori and Giacomo.

Note

There is a strong correlation between performing well at the WOC sprint and emailing me and asking for a copy of my Burano map. Of course, correlation does not equal causation.

MTB cycling 1:30:00 [1]

At the river trails. I hadn't biked there in over a month. I picked up the tapes that I'd hung for a practice MTBO course. Fun.

MTB cycling 25:00 [1]

Biking to Clinton.

When I got my bike the rear tire was flat. It must have been a slow leak. The tube had multiple old patches. I had a brand new tube and put that in. That meant that I didn't have a spare tube on the bike, but that shouldn't be too risky.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

MTB on the trails at Clinton. With the recent rains, it had been a while since I was last on singletrack trails. I was definitely rusty, especially for the first 15-20 minute.

running 50:00 [2]

Running on the trails after locking my bike at the beach. I took it easy and felt pretty good. I listened to another MTBPodden episode.

MTB cycling 15:00 [1]

MTB on the road to get home. On a bit of downhill, my front tire when flat (and I nearly crashed). I didn't have a spare tube. I had an old patch kit with dried out glue. I tried to patch the tire with the old glue, but it didn't hold air. I got a lift from Mary to get home.

Work commute. Chilly (for July) in the morning.

running 35:00 [2]

A slow jog on West Campus.

Wednesday Jul 2, 2014 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute in amazingly pleasant weather - low humidity and temp around 60 in the morning and low 70s in the evening.

running 20:00 [2]

A short run to the grocery store.

I listened to a bit of the Radio Oringen podcast interview with Mattias Karlsson. It was interesting.

Now it is time to attach the computer to the TV and watch Simon and Turbo.
