5 PM

other 20:00 [1]

Shoveling the walk and driveway.

running 25:00 [2]

Short jog on West Campus. I ran without a headlamp because it was early enough that there was still some dim light and the snow on the ground made it easier to see things.

orienteering 1:20:00 [2]

Checking control locations at SMP. Fun but I was tired by the end. I took a nap in the afternoon.

O' training just east of Rockhaven on the in-progress map. Fun and tough course with lots of climb. Until the last bit, there weren't really any places where you could just move easily through nice easy terrain. It wasn't so much that the terrain was junky, just always enough that you felt like it was work.

When I was done I grabbed my map board, put on some warm clothes and did 30 minutes of fieldchecking until Mary was done.

Headlamp trail run at Clinton. I took it easy. Some light snow was falling.

I saw a tvattbjorn.

Headlamp jog at West Campus.

I drove to work today because some of the streets and bike paths are still icy.

Mary and I went out to Clinton and ran a course on a map that is a mix of lidar contours, trails and a few added features. The course was fun.

The video is with the chestmount of the GoPro and stabilized by youtube.

Note

I did a bit over an hour of fieldchecking at Rockcrusher. My feet got cold.

Sunday Dec 23, 2012 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Kartlek at Rockcrusher. I set a course with 13 legs and ran it. The control locations were very simple. I did a bit of extra climbing and spent a bit of the time running in the woods. Nice day and fun.

I test ran Gene's red course at Rockhaven. It was fun and really nice to be out in just a little bit of snow.

I took one hard "fa."

I saw Gene out checking points and we stopped and talked a bit.

Jogging on the trails at Clinton overlook. Easy.

running 45:00 [2]

Trails with the headlamp (and in a light rain) on west campus. I waved to Mary when I was at the light to cross Clinton Parkway. She didn't wave back.

Tuesday Dec 18, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I pushed the effort on the way home.

Lots of crazy drivers in town for tonight's basketball game. I saw:

1. Running a red light on Mass.
2. Pedestrian waiting at cross walk near campus with no traffic, then stepping out when a car was coming (pedestrian on phone the entire time)
3. Car with right-of-way coming to dead stop in the intersection.
4. Car stopping in middle of road and driving starting to talk on phone.
5. Running a red light on Clinton Parkway.

It is a good reminder that it can be dangerous out there.

MTB cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Night ride on the river trail. It has been a while since I've ridden the MTB and I felt rusty for the fist 10-15 minutes. It was a very nice evening to be out - temp around 40, clear sky, no wind.

Sunday Dec 16, 2012 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

An hour of "kartlek" at Clinton Rockhaven. I stopped a few times to add a few things to the map. Gene's setting courses for our Jan 1 event on the map and it is very much a "work in progress."

PTOC local red course at Watkins Mill. Not a great day for me. I boomed 2. I took a reasonably hard fall at 3. I couldn't find 4. After 4, I eased off the effort and did my best to enjoy the rest of the course.

4

orienteering 15:00 [2]

Some control pick up time. I went to 4 to pick up the marker and found it a bit south of the correct location. Some people took a bit different route and found it without trouble.

I will have to recommend this terrain to Mikell Platt. He seems to think Burr Oak Woods has some thorns and thick forest.

Friday Dec 14, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It rained a little bit on me when I was coming home.

Thursday Dec 13, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Warmer than it has been all week.

A driver cut me off at 8th and N.H. on the way to work. I think they just didn't see me.

1

running 20:00 [2]

Short run to/from the grocery store to buy some salad.

1

Wednesday Dec 12, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Went in a bit early for a breakfast meeting.

1

running 25:00 [2]

Easy headlamp run on the trails on West Campus - not much time for more as we're off to a holiday party.

Tuesday Dec 11, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute to/from the office.

I felt a bit off all day. Went to be early and slept deeply.

1

Monday Dec 10, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It was cold on the way to the office. Actually, it wasn't exceptionally cold (maybe 17F), but it felt especially cold becuase of the wind. When it is below 20, I usually wear boots that are windproof. I didn't do that today. My feet were cold at the office and took a long time to warm up. It didn't help that my office was 64F when I arrived and didn't warm up until the afternoon.

I expected to feel tired from yesterday's run, but my legs didn't feel tired. Maybe I took it too easy yesterday.

Testing some legs and looking at some stuff at SMP.

I hit my hand on a stick or something. It is uncomfortable. I don't think it did any actual damage, but it feels worse afterwards than it did before.

Checking some control locations for Shifman's courses. Something like control picking.

running 50:00 [2]

2 x 25 minutes of running around while putting out and retrieving controls at Woodridge. It was foggy when I was putting out controls, which was really nice to look at. I took a couple of snapshots:

Note

I bumped my hand/finger on the door when I was putting some markers back in my car. It hurt and the finger is not very comfortable right now. Time for some ice.

Thursday Dec 6, 2012 #

running 40:00 [2]

Spent the work day at the KU Edwards Campus for the Mid-America Intergovernmental Audit Forum. On the way home I stopped at Kill Creek, put on my headlamp, and did some kartlek.

1

running 30:00 [2]

Short headlamp run on West Campus.

1

Tuesday Dec 4, 2012 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 20:00 [2]

An easy jog to get some time on my feet and see how everything felt. Everything felt ok.

1

Note

My finger feels a lot more comfortable today. On Sunday I fell and seem to have dislocated the finger. After I fell, I looked at my finger and it was pointing in an unnatural direction. But it popped back in place easily. It was uncomfortable on Sunday and then got a stiff and swollen yesterday. Movement was uncomfortable and when my bike hit a bump my hand would hurt. Today was much better. There's still some swelling and discomfort. I can bend my finger a bit - maybe 40 percent of the normal range of motion.

Mass start ultra long. Smashed a finger. Glasses and magnifier fogged. Attitude nOt very good. DNFd.

running 1:15:00 [2]

After DNFing I decided to take advantage of being on a map and explored a bit. I found a few controls and ran a couple of legs before making my way back. I might call this kartlek.
