cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute + trip to the grocery store. I was home in time to hand out candy (and maintain Mary's spreadsheet of trick-or-treat data).

running 25:00 [2]

Short run on the trails at West Campus. Legs felt good. I cut the run short so I'd be home in time to watch the entire KU basketball game on TV (it is half time now).

Nice sunset over West Campus http://instagram.com/p/RbOzqSQ045/

My actual watch time was 29:49. But, for logging purposes I consider that 25:00.

Work commute. Didn't get home until almost 9 because I'd been invited to attend a Madre Lawrence town hall meeting.

Went to Woodridge with Mary and Jenny. I needed to get there to see what work the map needs. I've got an old version and a newer (but less complete) version. I planned a course to take me to see some areas that I wanted to take a look at (as opposed to a course that was especially interesting). I ran with Jenny, stopping at each control and generally taking different routes.

Highlights were:

Mary was keeping up a good pace.

Jenny spotted her first cardinal. You tend to take for granted how amazing a cardinal is.

The fields have been cut since our last event. Open areas are viabl route options instead of waist deep grass.

Putting out some controls, picking up some controls and working registration and results at Dad Perry. Fun. It was especially nice that we had a bus load+ of Shawnee Mission kids. They bring some energy to the event.

Dick, Reta, Mary, MG, Jenny and I went to 23rd Street Brewery aftewards where we had a long wait for food and got to see the Jayhawks come remarkably close to winning the football game.

Work commute. Chilly for the ride in. On the ride home I was able to follow a car-free Jayhawk Blvd. The street was shut down a half an hour early for the KU Homecoming parade.

Work commute.

When I woke up the temp was 71. 45 minutes later it had dropped to 51 and was raining. I was suprised to see another 7 people out commuting in the cold, wind and rain.

Work commute. My left knee feels nearly normal. My right knee feels much better. There's still some fluid in the knee and the cut can hurt a bit, but the knee isn't stiffening up the way it was yesterday. I might try jogging tomorrow night.

Some preface stress when we learned that Mary's dad was in the hospital - worried about him and Patsy. Turns out he was more or less ok.

NAOC sprint. Steady run for the first 9 controls the ran into a low fence on the way to 10 and fell pretty hard. Both knees hit rock and the right knee bled a fair amount. Lucky to avoid bruised ribs. From 10 on my navigation was behind and my knee was tightening. Bummer.

The course was fun with more variety than I'd expected.

Off to see S and A (and the kids) as soon as we finished.

NAOC long red.

A bit better than yesterday in some ways. But I was running slowly.

The terrain here is interesting.

M45 course. Fun orienteering. I had a reasonable race. Lost some time when my glasses fogged on the last couple of short legs. I had a few legs where my map reading got behind, but for most of the course I was orienteering well. Running was slow and steady. Not moving through the terrain well (only my second run in the terrain this season so not unexpected).

Ran without a compass and that was a good decision.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

I had a mid-afternoon meeting with some scientists. So, I ended up getting back to the office a little late and getting to the trail head a little late. I'd planned to run and bike but decided to just bike.

As I was looking at the Kaw at the turn around, I wondered if there was much geosmin, MIB or microcystins in the water. The scientists gave me some papers that might help me figure that out.

I learned two lessons:

1. damp leaves can be slippery
2. riding into a tree can be uncomfortable

Running with a map at Clinton Rockcrusher. A good bit of kartlek. Today was the first time this season where the woods are pleasant enough to just run a course without worrying about the thickness. Some areas are still thick, but they are passable. I spend a good 40 minutes of this running off trail. I stepped on a thorn but it only went maybe 1/8 inch into my foot.

Also did 3 x short (5+ minute) courses. Fun. Fell down once. Slipped on the rocks a couple of times. I should have had the shoes with spikes given the rain.

I did a short MTBO course. It included the sandy section of the trail (which is extra sandy these days) and a resulting fall when I slipped some of the sand and didn't quite unclip in time.

Work commute. Legs felt tired in the morning.

running 15:00 [2]

Poking around at Dad Perry to check a few things on the map before the next meet. It is a neat little area (roughly 400 x 400 meters). Mary's course setter and her long course is some 3.9 km. That's a lot of orienteering in a little area.

running 40:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

On the river trail. I threw in 3 x 5 minutes at an honest effort. It felt mostly good. Breathing was a chore.

cycling 45:00 [1]

MTB on the river trails after pumping up my tires. I was dressed for running more than biking and the sun was going down. I was a bit chilly by the end. I used my bike light for the last ten minutes or so.

After I finished a guy who'd passed me earlier said he'd been trying to catch me near the end but that I was going fast. I don't think I'd ever heard someone say I was riding a MTB fast! I'm sure it was a combination of working hard to stay warm and being able to go faster than the guy who was trying to catch me because I had a light and he didn't.

Oh yeah, river was a bit high and quite pretty:

Work commute. I felt super strong on the Mississippi hill on the way home. I wonder if that's what it feels like for people who are doping. It was actually a stiff tail wind.

Running around on trails on West Campus. I found another permanent O' marker (set out by the KU ROTC?). Fun.

Kartlek at Clinton Rockcrusher. I stuck mostly to trails because the woods are still a bit junky. I kept the pace easy but was tired by the end (and unexpectedly tired later in the day).

I woke up in the middle of the night and decided that if I woke up around 6-6:30, I'd run the Sand Rat. I woke up at 7:45 (too late to get up and make it for the 8 a.m. close of registration). It might have been fun to run, but it wasn't too bad to sleep a bit late.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

On the trails at Clinton. I did a bit on the "white" trail which was fun. The white trail is more difficult - more rocks and roots. It was definitely a challenge, but not so difficult that it wasn't fun. That's progress. A month ago it wouldn't have been fun.

It was cold when I was out in the wind.

I think 25 Manna is tomorrow. I think I ran it 3 times (Lund 1x and IFKL 2x). I think one of my all time top 5 races was at 25 Manna.

running 40:00 [2]

Running on the river trails. It took me a while to realize that the tapes along the trail were markers for the Sand Rat. I might just run it.

The run was strange. I felt not very good and right at the end my hamstring cramped. Not sure that's ever happened before, let alone after 40 minutes of jogging. Fortunately, it eases quickly.

MTB cycling 50:00 [1]

Switched shoes from the run and got on the bike and did some riding. A couple of stops for minor mechanical issues (loosened cleat on one of my shoes and a loosened bolt holding my pump on the frame). Quick and easy fixes.

I realized that a scary feeling is when your on a corner and your front wheel starts sliding.
