running 30:00 [2]

Mary and I went out to Clinton. We parked at the boat ramps on the west side of the state park. Running on trails.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

Part of the trail run involved some concentrated orienteering technique work.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

As part of my project I climbed 14th street up to campus. The last bit is pretty steep.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on west campus. It felt pretty good. I took it easy.

Note

As a fan of basketball and someone amused by sports journalism, I found this video a lot of fun.

cycling 40:00 [1]

Some exploring to add streets as part of my new project. I'm not sure how long this will be interesting, but so far it has been.

Work commute.

running 45:00 [2]

Slow trail run at Clinton. I didn't feel especially tired, but my legs didn't seem to want to run. I guess I'm still a little worn from the weekend.

Nice sunset at the end of the run.

Note

I've started a new project. I read about a guy in NYC who is walking every block in all of the boroughs. I'm thinking of biking/walking/running every block in Lawrence. I started today. I've got a map at work and will mark each street segment as I go. The GIS guy at work says there are about 300 centerline miles in Lawrence. I'm going to exclude a few streets (23rd, 6th, Iowa, and maybe a few others) that are especially unpleasant.

I'm not sure I'll follow through, but I'll see how far I get before I lose interest.

Note

I took a complete day off yesterday. I was tired and worn out from Saturday. I moved around a little bit - mowed the lawn and biked to/from the grocery store. But really I just rested.

PTOC 3-hour score O' at Lake Jacomo.

I felt ok at the start. Matt B. was going at a pace that I didn't think I could keep up (I didn't know that he was only going to be out for an hour).

At the 90 minute point I was on track and figured I'd get all of the controls. But then at about 2:10-2:15, I slowed down a lot. Actually, I think I slowed down at about 1:55, but didn't really notice how much until 2:15.

The last 40 minutes or so was rough. I walked a lot and felt worn out. In the end, I skipped two controls (both high point controls).

I had two gels and some sport drink. I thought that'd be enough. The weather was warm (probably mid 70s) and sunny, but not too hot. I'm not in shape to run for 3 hours, but I thought I was in shape to move steadily for three hours. Maybe if it had been cooler.

Afterwards, I felt bad. I started to change and felt worse. I just sat in the car, trying to rest. It seemed like things were getting worse (i.e. feeling cruddy and sweating even though I wasn't moving) for about 30 minutes. Then I began to feel not-too-terrible. A Coke on the way home helped.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The students will be back next week. It takes about a day to get used to the town without the students, but it takes a month to get used to them being back.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Another rainy work commute.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging around on west campus - a bit muddy. The rain fell throughout the run, but it was light.

I enjoyed the run, but I barely got myself out the door.

running 45:00 [2]

Met Nadim and Mary at SMP after work. Nadim and I jogged around in the terrain looking at some of the areas of the map that I'd looked at before. I wanted to get another set of eyes on some of the areas and see what Nadim thought.

It was raining and cool, but not cold.

Since we'd have a bunch of rain throughout the day, I thought it'd be worth taking a look at the little waterfall I visited yesterday. Here's the waterfall with more water and Nadim for scale:

Checking stuff at SMP. I kept the pace low, but I was still pretty tired after 90 minutes. It was warm, but when the sun was behind clouds it wasn't too terrible.

I discovered some blazed horse trails. At this point, they aren't mappable, but if the horses start using them, we'll need to map the trails.

The controls were feature Paul C. asked me to check out.

I did a fair bit of climbing and spent a fair amount of time in the forest rather than in clearings or on trails. Maybe that's why I got so tired? The leaves are starting to come out, the ticks are active, and we won't have many more chances to enjoy running in the forest for the next 6 months or so.

I came across a nice little waterfall that I'd never seen before:

I ran a training course at Rockhaven (which is the far west end of the current Rockcrusher map) + a bit of extra exploring. I took it easy but made an effort to get a couple of extra hills and some extra running in the woods.

The leaves are coming out and the underbrush is starting to thicken.

It was a bit warm out, especially when the sun poked through the clouds.

Work commute. I made it home in time to watch the last 2.9 seconds of the Mizzou game. That was nice.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 55:00 [2]

Running on west campus. Most of the run was exploring some of the old trails. The woods are getting green and I won't have many more chances to explore the trails before the in-the-forest season is over.

Note

I've been casually following the GPS discussion. My feeling is that allowing people to run with GPS watches isn't a threat to the integrity of the sport and can make the sport more fun. I like downloading my Garmin 305 data to Quickroute and studying the data. I like looking at routes from other peoples' DOMA archives. I think it ought to be as easy as possible for people to create and share that data.

I was amused to see this comment on Attackpoint:

The issue is that some people feel entitled to use a specific device that they have purchased and that they enjoy, despite concerns that widespread use of such devices may change the nature of the sport. Maybe it will, hopefully it won't; but the core of the argument seems to be blind, selfish, and overwhelming devotion to a specific gadget.

"blind" and "selfish."

It reminds me of the debate approach highlighted in the old SNL sketch:

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. 35 F in the a.m. but 80+ in the afternoon.

I got home late because I was on a panel at KU's Internship Symposium. Not the best turnout, but fun and interesting.

Mary was in bed when I got home. She must be tired.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

And my right knee seems to be ok.

Note

I'm still disappointed that this didn't win melodifestivalen...

Work commute. My right knee was sore. It doesn't feel like a long-term problem.

We ate dinner at the new Esquina.

The course wasn't as interesting as Saturday, but it was very pleasant (and fun).

No compass.

Day 1 red m45 in North Carolina.

Mostly a good run. I was moving a bit slowly, especially on the last third of the course.

After giving it some thought I ran without a compass. I think that was good, but there were a few places where looking at a compass would have been useful.

I ran at Shawnee Mission Park. I checked out some specific locations that Paul C. had asked me to look at.

It was warm (mid 60s), sunny and windy.

I felt tired before and after, but felt pretty good running.

PTOC meet at Smithville. My only warm up was a little jogging in place. I should have warmed up a bit. I felt pretty good running - felt like I was working hard and not slacking off.

I took a moderately hard fall near the end. Took a look at the map as I ran downhill in the woods and caught my foot on a fence.

Interesting day in terms of food consumption. Breakfast was coffee and oatmeal with Swampfox as our breakfast guest. I cooked my oatmeal and ate it from a bowl. Swampfox had cold oatmeal in his metal bucket. Post race lunch was a cheese burger at McD's in Smithville. Dinner was squab at Michael Smith. I don't remember seeing squab on a menu before, so I took the opportunity to try it. It was really good.
