cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I had a long work day with the final SWTF meeting.

The LJWorld ran a strange opinion bit on the solid waste issues:

I ran the window course on West Campus that Mary ran yesterday. I went without a headlamp and made it less than half way before it was too dark to read the map. That just added to the challenge. I had to run over to a street light to read the map at each leg. Fun. I skipped one control that I knew would require me to get in some rough vegetation. I wouldn't normally skip a control to avoid a few scratches, but I was wearing shorts because it was so warm out. I think the afternoon high was 67. Bizarre weather for January.

Headlamp kartlek on West Campus. Most of this was on a map that had little windows around the controls but was otherwise blank. Fun.

My legs have been feeling a bit worn out, but they felt pretty good running this evening.

Something like a tempovaxlingsbana at Riverfront (except I ran at the same, slow, tempo the entire time). I needed the headlamp to read the map almost from the start and needed the headlamp to run in the woods after about 20 minutes. Fun.

3

Note

I drove to work today so I'd be able to get out to Riverfront quickly. I also have felt a little tired the last few days and I really, really, really, don't want to get sick.

Tomorrow will be a day off from orienteering and running. I've got to go meet with a neighborhood association in the evening and talk about work.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I left work late when I got caught up in a little experiment - trying to see if I could come up with a better way of projecting population growth for Lawrence without putting in much effort of study. I think it worked!

PTOC local meet at Monkey Mountain. Matt S ran the course in 36. That seems like a really good time by Matt.

I was running a bit passively. Not sure why. Maybe I haven't been racing enough.

I also had a bit of a thorn issue. Not as bad as this but the same basic issue. I stepped on a thorn that went through the bottom of my shoe and into my foot. The thorn broke off at the bottom of the shoe, so I couldn't pull it out. Instead I had to take the shoe off, hoping it wouldn't leave a chunk of the thorn in my foot. I loosened the shoe as much as possible, then pulled it off quickly. It hurt, but only for a few seconds.

From the GPS track, it looks like I lost 3 minutes to getting the thorn out of my foot. So, a time more reflective of my race would be about 45 minutes...still way behind Matt.

Patrick N. was at the meet, which was pretty cool. He took a red eye from Seattle and arrived this morning.

3

running 15:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (10:00 @4)

Some mindless running. I put in ten at an honest effort to get back to the car in time to get home, get a shower, and drive over to Dad's house to watch the KU basketball game.

I was in a hurry after stopping to chat with a guy in the forest. He was scouting out areas for next season's bow hunting and wondered what I was doing. I showed him the map and explained what I was doing, talked about orienteering a bit. He was interested enough that I gave him the OK web page address and he pulled out his Blackberry and made a note about the date of the next local event.

Today's orienteering training was fairly bogus.

I had to take a look at some houses as part of an audit project (rental houses owned by a landlord who hasn't registered the properties as required by the City Code). A number of the properties were in east Lawrence. I printed a Google map of the area, drew a course to connect the 6 properties, and biked through the resulting course.

This was bogus enough that I'll only give it one point. But, it was legit enough that I'll count it toward the 31 day challenge.

running 30:00 [2]

Easy headlamp jogging on west campus. I'd planned to get out a bit earlier, but spent time playing around with the lidar/laser scan data I got from Johnson County. They use one square mile tiles rather than the one square kilometer tiles that I'm used to. The big files are a chore for my PC to deal with.

orienteering 5:00 [2]

I did a short (6 minute) mini-sprint (18 controls) on west campus that Mary set for me. Fun and surprisingly technically intense.

orienteering 20:00 [1] ***

I wanted to take a day off from running, but I also want to make some progress on the 31 day challenge. I set a point to point course on the downtown and Mt Oread sprint maps and biked the course. I actually made a mistake - skipped a control and had to go back and get it. It is tricky to keep track on the map when you also have to watch for traffic and the wind is blowing the map around in your hand. I guess what happened is that my thumb slipped and I navigated to the wrong control. It must be technique training if you boom.

Once Dick, Nancy, and Paul arrived, I handed out the maps and then ran the course. The course was designed to explore some areas of the map and features that I'd guessed might be sketchy. Some were. Some weren't.

Warm weather - must have been mid 50s - with sun and a bit of a breeze. Felt more like spring than winter.

Kartlek training today.

I used OL Laser to generate potential cliffs, then set a course to see if the OL Laser generated cliffs were really cliffs (or earth banks). I was out about 2 hours, but did a bit of standing and looking at stuff, so I'll record 80 minutes.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

We had enough snow/ice on the roads that I didn't bike to work. I think I learned a useful lesson last winter (banging your head along a sidewalk is a good way to learn a lesson...and a good thing I had my helmet on).

I also took a day off from orienteering. So, no forward movement on the 31 day challenge, but probably a needed day away from running. If the roads had been ok, I might have put in a some bike orienteering for the challenge.

PTOC January score event at Shawnee Mission Park.

I had a hard time sleeping last night. I woke up several times, coughing. I was tired when I got up this morning. When I did a little jogging before the event I couldn't keep my heart rate below about 155. Maybe I should have just skipped the event.

I decided I'd try to keep a steady effort and move as smoothly as possible. It seemed to go well.

Some orienteering training at Riverfront. I took it easy because I'm a bit sick and running hard didn't seem like a good idea. I feel mostly ok, but I'm a bit tired and have some coughing. Last night I slept for 11 hours, so I'm clearing working to get healthy.

Here's the course - very simple:

http://sprintseries.org/doma/show_map.php?user=spi...

I took a few detours to check out some stuff. The map is still a work-in-progress. The vegetation mapping is primarily based on OL Laser object height data.

Mary designed a night O' course for me at "Nature Park." It was warm - I ran in just short sleeve. It is hard to believe it is January.

The course was fun, but it took a lot of concentration to make the most of it. It would have been easy and faster to just make it easy and fast. But I paid attention and also took some strange routes (like running in the forest that parallels a trail) to get the most of it.

Work commute and a long work day thanks to the SWTF.

Last year, a day like this would have ended my 31 day challenge. But this year's 31 day challenge is a bit different. The idea was to see how soon I could hit 31 days. I wanted the option of a day or two off - mainly to deal with things like the SWTF.

Jogging to/from the course on West Campus. On the jog back home I stopped and chatted with a KU PD officer. He'd seen me running around and decided to see what I was up to. He knew that night orienteering is not a crime, but he didn't know that I was night orienteering. He said that he wasn't worried about me, figured if I was up to no good I wouldn't have the light on.

Putting out controls for the OK event at Rockcrusher.

I felt ok. I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night and coughed off and on throughout the night. But I felt not too terrible today.

I worked the start/finish for the event (Fritz set the course, Mary did registration, Fritz and Paul C picked up controls). I got a little bit cold after the sun got a bit low and I was left in the shade.
