cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Kind of cold and damp.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. I had the TV on and watched the Royals get the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th inning...but they didn't manage to get any runs across.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I was also named as "healthy employee of the month" - mainly because I bike to work most of the time.

running 45:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) + (15:00 @4)

Ran with the Trailhawks but NO DOGS. That's pretty rare. Raymond was there, but he's going home for the next month or so.

The pace was good, in that it was a bit harder than I would have run.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Mary got back from Hawaii today.

running 1:50:00 [2]

I ran on a new section of basemap (laserscan 2.5 meter contours + lutning image) of the area just west of the previous Rockcrusher basemap. The basemap now covers the area from the dam to Rockhaven. My plan was to run the trails and use the GPS to rough-in the trails. The trails get much more distinct and used as you get closer to Rockhaven. Since the park is heavily used by horses, that means the trails can be a mess, too.

The weather was a bit unexpected:

and the video:

Before the run I watched the Kansas game. What I like about sports is that the outcome isn't known in advance. The uncertainty makes it fun. Today's game was fun to watch. I just wish Kansas had won.

orienteering race 55:12 [4] *** 4.46 mi (12:22 / mi) +156m 11:09 / mi
ahr:161 max:187 11c

PTOC local race at Lake Jacomo. We used a section of the map that we haven't used much (ever?) before. It was a bit rough and junky.

The temp was low 30s with a little bit of snow and plenty of wind. Running was great. But changing and standing around after the race was cold.

This was the sort of course/terrain where you needed some mental strength to deal with the junky stuff. I didn't have much of that. I watched the headcam video when I got home and my lack of mental strength was obvious, especially for the first half of the course. Here is the map:

http://sprintseries.org/doma/show_map.php?user=spi...

Matt won in 52. Joe was second in 53.

I went to Jacomo with Raymond. He's heading back to the UK next week (though he'll be back in Lawrence in late April). On the way back, I asked Raymond if there were things here that he'd miss. His answer was interesting - the optimism of the people.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Very little traffic, especially on the way home. The students haven't yet come back to town and everyone else was getting ready to watch basketball.

Speaking of basketball, I saw this article in The Atlantic:

http://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2011/03...

I THINK this is a joke. But, I'm sure that a lot of Kansas fans don't see it as a joke.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. Followed by watch, watch.

Note

From Saturday's race at S-F (covers the first 43 minutes or so of the race):

GPS+video+map

I'm not sure why, but the map image doesn't seem to load properly (at least for me). The QR map is at:

http://sprintseries.org/doma/show_map.php?user=spi...

I took a nice fall at 1:40.

The GPS track around control 13 is interesting. I punched at 13, but the track doesn't go to the control circle. I ran without a compass and both 13 and 14 felt strange (but without a compass and in flat terrain it didn't seem strange that it felt strange). But, the track suggests that the map might be a bit screwy around 13. Who knows?

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Wednesday Mar 23, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work.

running 50:00 [2]

Run on the trails at Clinton with the Trailhawks (+ 10 minutes on my own before).

At about 3 p.m. I didn't have any motivation to run. At 4, I suddenly felt like I would run. I'm glad I did. It was a perfect evening for a run and I enjoyed running and chatting with Gary H. (and running with Lambchop is always fun).

Monday Mar 21, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp was warm for the trip home.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. It was enough to break a good sweat and move a bit. My legs are a bit tired.

orienteering 1:27:00 [4] *** 11.29 km (7:42 / km) +245m 6:57 / km
ahr:164 max:175 20c

"Runt" at S-F.

My breathing felt a lot better than yesterday. My legs were a bit tired. I had a mixed run - most of it was fine, a few times my navigation was not what it should have been but it didn't cost me, and a few times my navigation was not what it should have been and it cost me. I ran Pasi-style again.

S-F is a really nice place to orienteer. I used to prefer rougher terrain, but I'm getting to prefer pleasant terrain.

I didn't skip a control. I thought about it, but never got around to it.

I've got headcam video from both days at S-F and I'll try to get around to processing and uploading the videos in the next few days.

The weekend was really nice. Thanks to all the SLOC folks for putting on the event. Thanks to OUSA for getting us a discount at Motel 6 on the way to the event.

Pete was good company. On the trip back he was like an entertaining all-talk XM station (in a good way). And, I made it home in time to watch all but the first basket of the KU game.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up. Once I started my heart rate didn't get below 147 despite the light effort. I guess that's the lingering illness.

orienteering race 53:36 [4] *** 7.55 km (7:06 / km) +119m 6:35 / km
ahr:170 max:178 15c

SLOC red at S-F. Super fun/pleasant terrain and an interesting course. As planned, I ran Pasi-style. That cost me a little on a couple of legs at the end where there wasn't much to read on the map and I had a bit of zig zagging.

See twitter for the course. I'll scan it later.

Friday Mar 18, 2011 #

Note

Travel most of the way to the SLOC meet. We got the OUSA discount at Motel 6.

Thursday Mar 17, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp was in the mid 60s when I went to work and nearly 80 for the trip home. Downtown was still crowded with people after the parade. I encountered a lot of bad drivers on my trip home.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Then laundry, laundry.

Then pack, pack.

Work commute. Pleasant weather today.

orienteering 15:00 [2] ***

A very short technique session on the base map (contours + lidar lutning image) of the neighborhood and Holcolm. Except for one brief coughing fit, I felt pretty good.

My O' technique was sloppy. I was orienteering passively - just heading in the right direction and checking off features. I'll need to fix that for the weekend.

running 5:00 [2]

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Mary declared that I was "almost normal" today. I'll still got a bit of a cough and some junk in my lungs, but she's probably right. I'll do an easy run tomorrow.

Monday Mar 14, 2011 #

rowing 20:00 [1]

I planned to do a little exercise today. I figured biking to/from work would be enough to see how I felt, but not so much that if I didn't feel ok I'd suffer.

When I woke up there was an inch of snow on the roads and snow falling. I decided not to bike to work.

After work I did a "row, row" session. I took it easy, but worked harder as I went and by the end was actually working up a sweat. When I stopped I had trouble breathing and coughed and hacked for a half an hour.

Sunday Mar 13, 2011 #

Note

Mary and I went for a hike on a bit of the Rockcrusher base map and then on some of the trails west of the current base map. It was just the right amount of work for me today.

orienteering 1:26:11 [2] *** 9.82 km (8:46 / km) +153m 8:08 / km

I shuffled around PTOC red course at Watkins Mill. It probably wasn't the best thing to do given that I'm still weak and occassionally coughing up junk from my lungs. But sometimes it makes sense to do things that don't make sense.

Fun course (I think Reta was course setter?).

Perfect weather - temp right at 50, sun and light wind.

Matt B ran the course in 70 minutes.

5 points? Usually I give myself 5 points for any orienteering race. But I kept a steady, easy effort, so this didn't really feel like a race.

Friday Mar 11, 2011 #

Note

Better, but still not normal. I'm going to try to jog/walk around a red course at Watkins Mill tomorrow.

Thursday Mar 10, 2011 #

Note

A little bit better. I was able to stay awake until 8:30 last night.

Wednesday Mar 9, 2011 #

Note

I got the third night in a row of 10+ hours of sleep.

Monday Mar 7, 2011 #

Note

Sick. Working on sleeping and avoiding stress.

Sunday Mar 6, 2011 #

running 1:25:00 [2]

An easy jog on trails and in the terrain at Rockcrusher.

I felt a bit off this morning and decided I was either getting sick or was having some allergy troubles. Since the weather was perfect and I haven't run much, I talked myself into the allergy hypothesis and went for a run.

I should have rested. I'm definitely sick and running didn't help (though it was mostly nice to be out).

I took the pace easy. But the last 30 minutes was a chore.

At yesterday's event, I had Matt B and Joe B run the D course with the headcam. You can see the map and Matt's video here:

Saturday Mar 5, 2011 #

running 25:00 [2]

Some jogging around while I did a last minute check to make sure controls hadn't disappeared and to pick up a few controls.

Friday Mar 4, 2011 #

Note

We went out for a dinner with two other local government auditors and their spouses....it might not sound like fun, but it was.

Thursday Mar 3, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

running 15:00 [2]

A very short jog from home.

Wednesday Mar 2, 2011 #

Note

Lazy, but good day. I didn't bike to work because I had a seminar to attend in KC in the a.m.

Just like Larry Brown, Mary and I went to the KU game. The game was good and the crowd was mostly good. We skipped out after the buzzer instead of staying for the senior speeches.

I wish there was some way to bottle the atmosphere of AFH...

Tuesday Mar 1, 2011 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. There were still a few icy patches this morning. I read a news story that a cyclist crashed on ice in the mid morning and had to go to the hospital. Hope the cyclist was ok.

running 50:00 [2]

Very relaxed trail run at Clinton overlook. The first 20 minutes or so I was without a light, then it got dark enough that I turned on a light.

I didn't feel especially good or bad, but it was a really enjoyable run.

2 points for the day. 1 for cycling as alternative training and 1 for a run.
