cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Hot today.

I decided that the work commute was enough and I was going spend some time this evening playing around with OL-Laser (a program for using lidar data for O' maps). Downloaded the software, installed it, started it up...whoops. Then I read the detail and sure enough - the beta version expires on 8/31/10.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Legs felt really worn out after yesterday's run. That's kind of sad but not unexpected.
7 PM

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

cycling 30:00 [1]

I went out and biked for a bit over half an hour. I figured it would be the responsible thing to do. It was fun but my legs felt tired.

Sunday Aug 29, 2010 #

9 AM

cycling 45:00 [1]

Biking to/from the Clinton trail head. I could tell it was going to be a bit warm today, but I left the house a bit later than I could have. I wanted to give the trail runners a chance to get rid of the spider webs for me.

I pushed a bit more than usual on the biking.

orienteering 10:00 [2]

Some careful map reading during the run.

running 1:10:00 [2]

Trail run at Clinton.

When I woke up in the morning my legs felt dead. I decided that I'd start easy (I guess I always do that), and then turn around early if I didn't feel good. But, I felt good.

I saw MeanGene's car in the parking lot, but never saw him. When I got back, his car was gone. I thank him for helping remove spider webs.

Test running draft courses at Robinson. After testing, I checked out a couple of things on the map that needed a look.

Friday Aug 27, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual work commute. Once again, perfect temp for the ride in. As the biking weather improves and the students have returned, I see a lot more bike commuters out there.

Once again, I got cut off by the Prius-driver who cuts me off about once a week. It is the same car and driver each time. I've learned to expect them to cut me off.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

The last of the moving boxes in the basement has now been unpacked. It makes the room feel a lot bigger and brighter. Our home gym is now looking pretty good.

I've been thinking that we might need a stationary bike. I've typically used a trainer-stand and my road bike, but I think it might be nice to have a bike made for sitting still.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I went to the police chief's retirement reception - unusual crowd.

Very slow and easy at Clinton overlook. I ran Genes sprint course. First the odd controls, then the even.

cycling 45:00 [1]

To/from work.

I spent the first hour of the day reading the exposure draft of the Yellow Book (i.e. Government Auditing Standards). From then on the day went pretty well.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

Jogging at the overlook. I read the map continuously and decided to count the run as O' training.

When I started I heard someone yell, "Hey Mike." Turns out it was Gary of the Trailhawks.

Really nice cool weather - felt great.

cycling 50:00 [1]

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual work commute.
6 PM

cycling 20:00 [1]

Biking to/from the Robinson map. I pushed the pace a bit on the climbs.

I test ran two of the short sprint courses for the N.O.D. event. Now that the construction area just east of Robinson is completed I need to make a couple of small additions/corrections to the map. Otherwise it is pretty much finished.

I thought the courses were fun - more fun that I'd anticipated. With all of the students back in town there is the added challenge of running and reading the map without running into a student.

Saturday Aug 21, 2010 #

9 AM

cycling 50:00 [1]

Biking to/from the Clinton Overlook trail head. I figured that I was leaving late enough that some early morning trail runners would have taken down the spider webs for me.

running 1:10:00 [2]

I ran on the trails at the overlook and the state park. I carried the overlook sprint map and contours+trails only for the state park. I didn't read them much, just a glance at the map now and then.

I planned to jog 45-60 minutes but ended up doing a little bit more. I haven't run this long in a while and I certainly haven't felt this good in a while. I feel like my motivation is coming back.

Friday Aug 20, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

The plan was to go for a ride this evening with Mary, but a storm with lots of lighting was moving through and we decided to skip the ride.

Thursday Aug 19, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

Today was the first day of classes at KU. That means lots of people and traffic on campus at 7:40 a.m. It takes a few weeks before the kids figure out that there isn't anyone to make them go to class. Then the crowds die down a bit.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Feeling a bit sleepy.

Wednesday Aug 18, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. With the students back in town for just a few days the driving is a bit scary (it'll calm down in a week or so). On my return trip I saw two cars drive right through stop signs. I saw one crash (not too bad).
6 PM

cycling 50:00 [1]

I biked to/from the Clinton Overlook. Kept a sharp eye out for crazy drivers - saw a couple. Reminder to self - stay safe. It'll get better in a week or two.

running 25:00 [2]

Easy jog on the trails with the map in hand.

When I arrived a saw the lot full of Trailhawks. I'd forgotten about the Wednesday evening run. I chatted with Gary. Turns out there were testing the shoreline shuffle course. I didn't want to go all the way over to the race start area and decided not to run with them.

Tuesday Aug 17, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The trip in was in a nice cool rain.

running 40:00 [2]

I jogged through the West Campus map and onto the Mt Oread map. I dropped by the OK table at the student activity fair and said hello to Pete and Mary. It looked like a big crowd at the event and they seemed to be getting some interest. I also saw Gene and chatted with him a bit. Then I jogged home. My legs felt good.

Monday Aug 16, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The temp was in the lower 60s when I went to work. It felt great. Great. It had reached mid 80s for the return trip, but the humidity was low and it felt almost great.

rowing 25:00 [1]

Row, row, ro.

I spent a bunch of time this evening looking at the tracking from WOC. I didn't buy the online coverage (mainly because so much of the live stuff was going on while I was at work). I hadn't really seen much of the tracking before and it was fun to see. I also watched a bit of the video coverage from Norwegian TV. I thought they did quite well. I still have some more of the TV coverage to catch up on.

Sunday Aug 15, 2010 #

9 AM

cycling 50:00 [1]

After following the WOC relay online, I biked to/from Clinton.

orienteering 10:00 [2] ***

I re-ran all but one control from yesterday's sprint at Clinton Overlook. I took the controls in reverse order (to be different) and skipped one control (as an homage to TG).

running 30:00 [2]

On the trails with the map in hand and spending a reasonable amount of time reading it, but not enough to consider it orienteering training.

And the big news of the day....when I went out side to get the paper this morning if felt NICE. The excessive heat warning is over and it actually felt good to be outside and moving around!

cycling 50:00 [1]

Biking from home to the arboretum, putting out the markers, biking to the overlook, biking back to the arboretum, picking up markers, and then biking home.

orienteering race 11:42 [4] *** 2.09 km (5:36 / km) +23m 5:18 / km

Sprint at Clinton Overlook. I was a bit tired and didn't really get much out of myself - running steady and hard, but not quite flat out. Mook blazed the course in under 9 minutes.

The course was fun with a few short legs with some direction change, then a route choice leg, and then you were done. Gene put out some markers with no punches at the last two controls. One of them pulled me off. I was coming toward 8 and figured the marker might be tucked behind a tree. So I was planning to orienteer to the right tree. Then I spotted a marker on a tree from about 150 meters away and just went to it. I got to the marker - no punch. I checked the ground and was just leaving when I spotted another marker about 10 meters away. "Ah hah! Gene is being tricky!"

Warm, but not as bad as the last week or so.

And the "excessive heat warning" that was set to expire tonight was extended another day.

Work commute. It was really hot on the trip home. The "excessive heat warning" was expected to end today, but the NWS extended it through tomorrow.

Thursday Aug 12, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. That was enough outdoor exercise for me because it was another "feels like" 110+ day.

My office has been uncomfortable all week (actually all summer, but except for this week it hasn't been so bad if I have a cool drink and a fan blowing on me). Today the temp hit 85 at my desk. I certainly don't work as well when it gets that hot.

cycling 45:00 [1]

The work commute.

Mary and I went out to dinner after work and I biked home after dinner. Being a little later and after a pop up storm, the temperature was a bit lower and more comfortable.

Tuesday Aug 10, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I also biked to/from the grocery store.

On the trip in, I spotted a figure running fast across West Campus. As I got a little closer, I saw a map in his hand and realized it was Mook.

Mook was downtown and we had lunch. I can recommed El Jeffe at Esquina if you want a tasty (and huge) meal.

Note

I spent some time looking at the WOC sprint maps. The courses look fun. It seems like there was a bit more difficult orienteering on the qualifying races than at previous WOC qualifying races. Maybe it is just my imagination. I guess I could make a comparison and see.

A general observation: the split times are consistent with most of the US runners taking just a few extra seconds at each control. I can imagine that checking descriptions and codes, punching (and I think they use Emit, so it is not quite as familiar), orienteering and folding the map, costs a few extra seconds each control. Over 20 or more controls, a second or two per control really adds up.
9 AM

cycling 50:00 [1]

To/from Clinton for a run. I probably should have gotten out the door a bit earlier. It has been a hot and humid day. I sat at the computer and followed the WOC sprint finals instead of getting started right away.

running 1:00:00 [2]

On the trails at Clinton. I felt good for about 15 minutes, then ok for about 30 minutes, then terrible for the last 15. I saw MeanGene out there. He'd been going for over 3 hours. Tough guy.

During my bike-to-run transition, I added a few trees to the overlook map using the iphone app. I think the app will be useful for making those little changes to maps that you bump into from time to time. I typically carry an O' map with me if I'm running somewhere that has a map. I'll notice little changes - maybe a tree that was removed or a new tree that was planted, sometimes a new trail or a re-routed trail. With the iphone app, it takes just a little time to make the change and then move on.

PTOC sprint race on a new map at English Landing. The map is just a little bit south of PNS, where I used to run 2-3 times a week.

I felt like I was moving pretty well. I was surprised to finish ahead of Matt and Joe.

Clean run aside from passing by 6 without seeing the flag, resulting in adding 75 meters to the race.

running 10:00 [1]

Very slow, easy jogging to warm up a bit. I went super easy because my legs didn't feel very good and it was already a bit warm.

I 'tweaked' my right knee yesterday, but it was completely normal today.

Friday Aug 6, 2010 #

Work commute. On the return trip the weather was much more comfortable than the last few days!

cycling 55:00 [1]

Easy bike path ride with Mary. Lots of fun.

Before the ride I loaded GhettOCAD on my iphone. My first impressions are good. All I've done is played around with the drawing using the OCAD layer. It seems quite straightforward and intuitive. I'll play around some more and eventually see what I can do with the GPS and WMS layers. Biggins is amazing.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Had a weird day at work with an LJWorld editorial touching on an on-going project and the announcement that the Police Chief was retiring.

Another day of disgusting heat and humidity.

Monday Aug 2, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Today was the first day with a temp of 100 F. It felt like it. One of those days where the wind on your face feels uncomfortable - like having a hair dryer blowing on you. Usually this sort of weather doesn't last more than a few days to a week. We'll see.

It is also the time of year when the students begin to return. That means traffic starts to pick up and weird driving becomes much more common. You get some young drivers new in town. They've got the good eyesight and quick reflexes to be good drivers. They're also a bit clueless and lack the experience to be good drivers. They've got the self confidence to do dumb things without realizing what they're doing. I keep an eye out for them. Of course, I also watch for the older drivers, the parents bringing their kids to college. They've got the experience, but maybe not the rest of what you need to be a good driver.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Sunday Aug 1, 2010 #

Note

I put in some time field checking the sprint map near Robinson. I've got the complete area finished, but will need to do some quality control. By "finished" I mean I've been over the entire area except for the one little bit that I forgot about (just an area about the size of two tennis courts).

I had another allergic reaction. Eyelids swelled up and my eye itched. I started to have some breathing problems. Both the eyes and the breathing cleared up within about 15 minutes of getting someplace that was cat-free.
