Testing Mary's sprint course on the Mount Oread map plus a little extra to check out a few things.

Mary made good use of the map, but there are parts of the map that need updating. One of the problems with campus maps is that the university has a tendency to have little construction projects going on all the time, resulting in lots of little changes.

Checking my revised course for next weekend's WC sprint. My earlier version of the course used some trails that are passable but a bit overgrown. I decided to stick with open areas for more pleasant running. That meant revising the course.

I biked to/from the start. I also did some weeding when I got home (sort of like Tom's weed/jog workout).

running 1:30:00 [2]

Longish jog on the trails at Clinton. We parked at the boat ramp on the west end of the state park. I took it easy, felt slow, and finished feeling good. My current plan is to avoid running more than 90 minutes until I'm sure that my left hip is ok.

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual commute. Felt a bit hot out there today.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row. Watched a bit of the Royal's game against Boston (Wakefield pitching).

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I thought about a short jog, but decided to mow the lawn instead.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Just getting to/from work felt like a chore. I felt off all day. I had trouble concentrating and just never felt good. Now - after 10+ hours of sleep - I feel fine.

Work commute.

On the way in I chatted with a cyclist who was in front of Sunflower. He wanted directions to Desoto. Turns out he'd biked from KCK to Topeka to video tape the drag races. He'd planned to ride the bus back to KCK but they were going to charge him $35 to haul his bike and refused to take it without a box. He only had $45 and didn't have a box, so he decided to ride back to KCK.

He'd ridden along US40 from Topeka at night - stopped a couple of times by the Sheriff who said that he wasn't breaking any laws, but they were getting lots of calls from drivers. Eventually, he slept near a farm house under a clear plastic shower curtain. He told me that if I was ever doing something like this, I should have a clear shower curtain.

Seemed like an interesting guy. It seemed as if he made the best of his situation. No whinning. Nice.

running 20:00 [2]

On the pavement. I dropped the old bike off at my Dad's house and ran home. Warm out there.

running 55:00 [2]

Jogging on the trails at Wyandotte. I carried the map and read it off and on. About half of the time I was with Mary. That was nice.

It was quite warm and humid today.

Testing some legs for the upcoming West Campus sprint. I think the course needs to be a little longer and I'm not sure if I want to send runners on any of the trails. We'll see.

I also did a bit of easy cycling today - went with Mary and Susan on the bike trail and then to/from the start on West Campus.

Today was the first day of the year where it started to feel like summer - warm and humid. Today was also the Trailhawks marathon and 50 mile trail race. That'd have been pretty tough.

It was bike to work day. Sunflower was providing coffee, juice, and snacks to bike commuters. I stopped for a coffee and then joined Jonathan for the last 2 blocks of the commute.

After work, I met Mary and her sister Susan for dinner at Esquina and then biked home.

Here's the video of my stop for coffee and biking to work:

Back to the usual routine after a really good few days in Texas.

The trip to work was in a very light rain. The trip home was in a steady rain that was getting a bit heavy by the time I got home.

Today was supposed to be some sort of employee health/wellness day, with a bike ride around lunch (3.5 miles). The rain canceled the ride, but we had a healthy-ish lunch.

I went for a jog in the am. It was muggy but only about 72 F. I'm not sure how people manage to run through the summer I'm TX. Most of my run was on the Riverwalk. I finished with ten+ at an honest effort.

I also put in quite a bit of walking today.

Saturday May 15, 2010 #

Note

Went for a longish walk to stretch my legs. The temps here in San Antonio are a bit warm for me.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. The trip in was in a steady rain. I need to get some better pants for biking in the rain.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Row, row.

Followed by pack, pack. I'm heading off to Texas (of all places) tomorrow.

Wednesday May 12, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Storms came through town in the late afternoon. I studied the radar and figured that I could time it just right and make it home between a couple of storms. It worked out just right.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Super-nice weather for commuting - even had an unusual tail wind to push me home.

running 20:00 [2]

Easy jog on west campus. My ankle felt uncomfortable when I started, but after a few minutes it was fine.

Monday May 10, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual work commute. The ride home was in a cool rain. Looks like we might get some storms tonight.

Another easy jog on the trails at Clinton SP. Like yesterday, I carried the contour+trail map and read it quite a bit. Better visibility today (I ran in a different section of the park) made it a lot easier to keep track of where you were, but also meant you could see a lot more of the terrain.

My ankle was about the same as yesterday. I had some discomfort, but it felt stable.

I felt a bit better physically. I was moving a little bit better. Here's a snapshot from the trail:

Trail run at Clinton SP on a perfect day for an easy trail run - dry, clear, and about 60 degrees.

I carried the contours+trails map and read it quite a bit. With all of the leaves out, you can lose track of where you are because you can't really see very far in the terrain.

I took it easy. My ankle felt good. I had some discomfort, but it felt stable and now (a couple of hours after finishing) it isn't any worse than it was before I ran.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Bike commute.

After work I had a choice: trail run with the Trailhawks or Girl With Dragon Tatoo at Liberty Hall. I liked the movie. A bit violent for my taste but the Svenska was fun.

Work commute.

I expected tonight to be a really late night, but the CC meeting was over at 9 and I was home by 9:30. Nice.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Bike commute.

My left ankle is a bit sore, but I don't think it is anything that'll cause any problems.

I spent some time thinking about my races this weekend. I suffered from a lack of condition. But, I felt like I was orienteering well. I haven't done much orienteering (racing or training) since January. Typically I need a bit of practice to get my orienteering sharp. But I was orienteering well and that was a little surprising and quite satisfying. I think I've figured out a few new things about my orienteering technique. It is always fun to learn.

Red course at West Point Post.

Tired. I did a lot of walking. My navigation was ok, but a bit off compared to Saturday. I struggled a lot more to keep concentrating and was probably lucky not to make any big booms.

I turned my left ankle near the end. That slowed me even more than being just tired.

A clear indication that my mind wasn't sharp was that I had a song stuck in my head. Not just any song, but Åke Uppman 's classic "Jag är en man" (a "swedish outlaw country" song from the late 60s):

Middle distance at Lake Popolopen.

This was really a lot of fun, though I got tired quickly.

On the "long" leg (9 to 10 was maybe 900 meters), I was caught and passed by Carl Underwood. I think he's on the JWOC team this year. I didn't know who he was at the time, but he went by me pretty easily then made a boom at the control (and I slipped by him).

Warm day.

Sprint at Camp Buckner.

Fun course. I really like when we run sprints on maps drawn to sprint standards. I'm not really sure why. It doesn't seem like it is such a big difference.

For the most part, I was orienteering well. Of course, my condition is a bit of a problem and the heat slowed me a bit. I ran cleanly but had a bit of luck on one leg. My plan to 6 was to gain a line or two and use the buildings at the bottom of the hill to decide when to stop for the control. Turned out I couldn't see the buildings and had to change my plan on the fly. It worked out ok, but I'm sure it cost me some time because I slowed more than I'd have had to if I'd been able to see the buildings.

Before the start I soaked my O' top in cold water. Putting on the cold shirt felt great and seemed to cool me off a bit.

Lots of fun.
