cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Warm enough (60F) in the a.m. that I was in shirt sleeves. Warm enough in the p.m. (80+) that I was overdressed in shirt sleeves.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

Putting out and picking up controls for this evenings informal O' practice at Dad Perry Park. Here's a video of Mary and MG starting:

There were two courses. Mary and MG started out on the same course, then Mary decided to do the other course. So what looks like Mary going out of the start in the wrong direction is really Mary changing her mind about which course to do first.

cycling 22:30 [1]

Another half-commute. This time it was from the office to home (into a steady headwind).

rowing 20:00 [1]

I didn't have much time to train this evening. It was my nigh to cook dinner. But more importantly, I had to get the map in shape for tomorrow's low key O' training session. We'll be using an in-progress sprint map of Dad Perry Park (recall the thorn picture for a couple of days ago). It'll be good to get some feedback from Mary and Meangene.

While I was on the land boat I decided to try to think like Tom. What would Tom think about? On the way home from work I saw a squirrel. It ran into the middle of the road, stopped, did a double take, then ran off. If it'd just stood in place, I'd have crashed into him. Tom would be interested in the squirrel, I'm guessing. He'd have probably been thinking about how he could model squirrel behavior in some sort of complicated formula that would fit on a Powerpoint slide for a presentation at a math conference.

Or maybe not.

orienteering race 6:00 [4] ***

PTOC relay at Wallace State Park.

OK had two teams. OK1 was MeanGene, Mary, and Fritz. OK2 was me, Hitch, and Pete.

The two OK teams were the first teams to finish. Turns out some idiot (me) skipped a control and OK2 was DQ. Sorry, Hitch. Sorry, Pete.

I wasn't so much mad at myself as just surprised. Skip a control? Gene suggested it was officially my first "senior moment."

The race was a sprint-relay. 3 course, all about 1 km. The courses varied in difficulty (orange, yellow, white). No forking, but teams ran the courses in different order. Fun format and the entire thing was over quickly.

Some short videos here:

PTOC red course at Wallace State Park. This was a brand new map of an area we've never used before. That's always fun. Angie, Matt and Joe Barrett made the map.

Cool (40) and steady rain. The rain (and last weekend's snow) made the forest a little muddy and slippery. Nothing extreme, though.

My run was a bit odd. I was running and reading instead of reading and running, especially in the beginning of the course.

I took a pretty hard fall on a wood bridge at the last control. I don't think I bruised a rib, but I did something to the shoulder/chest area that feels a bit uncomfortable.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging around in the cool rain trying to warm up a bit.

Friday Mar 26, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Lots of folks out today.

rowing 20:00 [1]

After dinner (ribs from Gran Daddy's) I put in a few minutes on the land boat.

Thursday Mar 25, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Looked like rain on the way to work, but the rain held off. Warm and sunny (and a tail wind) on the way home.

running 45:00 [2]

Ran with the West Campus sprint map in my hand and then explored the area around Dole/Lied using a basemap (lidar contours + lidar instensity). It would make sense to extend the map to cover Dole/Lied. But, it isn't especially interesting. Another option is to map to the east of West Campus. A map that covered Daisy Hill and Allen Field House would be nice to have.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work in a light rain. Riding in the rain is fun as long as the rain isn't heavy.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Little bit on the land boat. Feeling a bit sleepy, need to get lots of sleep tonight.

Tuesday Mar 23, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Sub-freezing on the way to work, nearly 70 on the return trip. The warm weather inspired a lot of people to get out and run.

running 20:00 [2]

A short run with an OpenOrienteeringMap in hand. I explored the little bike path that Mary likes to ride. When I got home I added it to OSM.

Monday Mar 22, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual bike commute. Except, it was a good bit slower than usual on the trip to work. There were plenty of patches of ice on the roads. I had to keep a sharp eye out for the icy spots.

Sunday Mar 21, 2010 #

running 40:00 [2]

Jogging the trail network at Dad Perry Park. Slushy and muddy. Wearing neoprene socks was a must.

I carried a basemap - lidar contours + lidar intensity image.

After jogging the trails, I did about 90 minutes of fieldchecking. Dad Perry will make a nice little sprint area. The forest is generally crappy, but the trail network is dense.

running 1:20:00 [2] 4.9 mi (16:20 / mi)

Mary and I went to Clinton S.P. I took it pretty easy. I ran with the contour+trails map and read it a good bit.

The plan, when I went to bed last night and set the alarm, was to run the trail race at Perry. I got up in the middle of the night and looked out the window. Snow covered everything, as forecast, but not really as I'd expected. I decided I didn't want to deal with driving up to Perry with the roads covered in snow. So, I turned off the alarm and went back to bed...wondering what Tom would have done...

Running in the snow at Clinton was a blast. The trails were snow covering mud/slush.

A couple of snapshots from the run:

Just testing the GPX upload feature. The track shows a bit of my walk back to the office after a trip to Wheatfields to get a loaf of bread.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Interesting weather today. Chilly in the morning, then temp in the 60s around lunch, then back to the upper 30 by trip home.

rowing 20:00 [1]

On the land boat. This was my first serious effort at trying to "think like Tom." I would have done some pause drills if I knew what they were.

Thursday Mar 18, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Nice day. Spent the last half hour of the workday on the phone with a state auditor (not from Kansas) chatting about performance auditing. The call was unexpected and really interesting. Then, met Mary downtown for dinner at Esquina. I had the fish tacos. Biked home after dinner. The KU game will start soon. Nice day.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Bike commute. I noticed a few Deffenbaugh recycling bins out on the streets. I wonder how many people are using them for curbside recycling.

Note

Sometimes I think orienteers are nuts (like when I read the thread about the logo)...Then I realize that people are nuts and orienteers are people.
6 PM

orienteering 50:00 [2] 3.97 mi (12:36 / mi)

Jogging on muddy trails at Clinton SP. I carried a map - half O' map and half contours only.

Near the end I did a few hundred meters with some Trail Hawks.

Tuesday Mar 16, 2010 #

cycling 1:15:00 [1]

Work commute followed by half an hour on the trainer when I first got home.

Monday Mar 15, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It is spring break this week, so the traffic was especially light.

On the return trip I saw Mary. That was unexpected. I also saw Baby Jay playing with a hula hoop on the lawn in front of Strong Hall. That was also unexpected.

rowing 20:00 [1]

A bit on the land boat. My legs felt petty good today, but I thought an easy day was wise. Or maybe it was just lazy?

Sunday Mar 14, 2010 #

running 2:00:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (1:00:00 @2)

I went for a jog at Clinton State Park. About half of the run was just a regular jog on trails. The rest was fast-fieldchecking. I added a few simple features to the current verion of the basemap. Most of what I added were rockwalls. But, I also added a couple of buildings and a small bit of new trail. I was able to keep the heart rate around 110-120 while fieldchecking.

Saturday Mar 13, 2010 #

Note

Finally got around to loading the Forest Park sprint and the Hawn Runt to DOMA.

orienteering 56:11 [4] *** 5.2 mi (10:48 / mi)

PTOC red course at a new map - Smithville. Kind of rough with some yucky (or maybe even icky) forest and a cold rain falling. I'd hoped and expected the rain to hold off, so I hadn't bothered with anti-fog on the glasses (not sure if it would have worked). I had a few difficulties reading detail on the map.

When you ran off trail it was a struggle to figure out how to get through fastest. Sometimes you push hard and fight to get through stuff. But, other times it was better to try to just ease back and focus on not thrashing.

All in all, a fun event.

running 10:00 [2]

Warm up jog. A bald eagle was flying around the little peninsula that I jogged on to warm up. That was pretty cool.

Friday Mar 12, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Just the commute. Nothing else. It wasn't exactly dream commuting weather. Steady, cold rain on both the to and from ride.

I worked a bit late tonight. I had some stuff to get done before daylight savings kicks in. Got it done.

Thursday Mar 11, 2010 #

cycling 1:15:00 [1]

Work commute and then a half hour on the trainer in the basement.

Wednesday Mar 10, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work. The ride home was in a steady rain.

rowing 20:00 [1]

I'd planned to run, but I felt sleepy (late night last night) and decided to do nothing. Then I decided that a little bit on the land boat would be reasonable.

Tuesday Mar 9, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Actually I'm prelogging my return trip. I'm at a CC meeting tonight and I am the last item on the agenda. I'll probably be home tonight. My guess is I'll roll in around midnight.

cycling 20:00 [1]

Picked up my bike at Sunflower after work and biked home in the light rain. They did a tune up and the bike seems to be in good shape. Except, they also seemed to have done something that made the front light stop working. The rear light they didn't get around to working on. The bike has a generator in the front hub that powers a rear and a front light. The front light has always worked (until today). The rear light has been unreliable. Guess I'll take it back tomorrow and try to get the front working again. Annoying.

The "Runt" at Hawn. The Runt is a mass start "goat" style course with one skip. It is the wimpy version of the Grunt. Since I'm a wimp, I ran the Grunt.

It went ok.

Middle distance red course at Hawn. Mostly a good run.

I thought the course was really interesting. It felt like we had plenty of variety. I had some trouble on the long leg when I started thinking about effort rather than map reading and my map contact got a little weak. I also didn't see one route choice that might have been better. I don't mind taking the wrong route, but I don't like that I didn't even see one option.
3 PM

running 10:00 [1]

Warm up jog. I checked the radio just before I left and was glad to hear that Kansas was up by almost 20 with about 6 minutes to go.

Sprint at Hawn on a sprint standard map (nice).

Fun course. I struggled a bit with the steep downhill/sidehill leg.

orienteering 17:14 [4] *** 1.79 mi (9:39 / mi)

Sprint race at Forest Park. The course was mostly in the forest, which surprised me a bit. I had a nice run except for a stretch of about 200 meters where I fell behind in my map reading and was running and reading instead of reading and running.

Nice to run on a sprint standard map instead of a regular standard map blown up to a larger scale. All of the sprint mapping I've been doing has made it a lot easier to deal with the sprint standards - in particular the brown fill for trails.

I was a little surprised to beat Anna.

running 10:00 [1]

Thursday Mar 4, 2010 #

cycling 25:00 [1]

Commute to work. I left my bike at Sunflower for a post-winter check up.

cycling 30:00 [1]

On the trainer in the basement while watching a bit of one of the Bourne movies.

Wednesday Mar 3, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute.

I encountered some pretty weak driving on the way home. I attribute it to nice weather and the final KU home basketball game of the season. It also doesn't help that people drive while texting.

rowing 20:00 [1]

A bit of time on the land boat. My shoulder feels pretty good - nearly normal.

Tuesday Mar 2, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. I saw the bobcat on my trip to the office, but not on the return trip.
6 PM

running 15:00 [2]

A bit of warm up and then the last 5 minutes. The last bit I ran with Mary. That was fun.

orienteering 30:00 [2] ***

A bit of O' training. Night O' actually.

The trails at Clinton are muddy. The mud is heavy. Some of it was not much fun.

Monday Mar 1, 2010 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The work commute. The streets are almost completely ice free.

On the return trip I met a bobcat. I watched him a bit. He sat in a brush pile watching me. Eventually, he ran off to some trees with more cover. I hadn't seen a bobcat in town before. Very cool.

cycling 30:00 [1]

On the trainer in the basement. I'd initially planned a short jog with a map. But, I'm feeling a bit sore from yesterday's fall and the trainer seemed like the most comfortable option.
