running 10:00 [1]

Some easy jogging to warm up. Legs felt a bit odd.

PTOC red course at Blue Springs Lake. This was a strange effort. I had trouble finding a good feeling physically. On the other hand, I was navigating and concentrating well.

I think part of the trouble with running was the terrain. The runnability kept changing as was rarely nice (though there were enough road sections that you could get moving on some legs). The grass was deep in places. Not just deep, also "thick." Running in some of the yellow areas felt like running in a Scandinavian marsh.

I was pretty psyched that I pushed hard up the final hill and on the last couple of legs because I ended up beating Matt S. by just 19 seconds.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Bike commute. Some cold wind out there today.

I gave some thought to using the land boat this evening, but I think I'm going to take a nap instead. I'm doing a late night ride along with the PD tonight, so I expect to be out until at least 3 a.m. Yeah, a nap is in order.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. It rained most of the night and pretty much all day...except it didn't rain when I was on my way to work and when I was on my way home. Amazing luck.

running 45:00 [2]

Shuffled around on West Campus. I carried the map but didn't read it much. It was my first night run of the season. It is always fun to run in the dark with a lamp. The steady, light mist helped. Running with a lamp in a misty rain reminded me of a lot of training sessions in Stockholm. The main difference being that it was warm tonight.

rowing 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Warmer than expected.

running 25:00 [2]

Jogging around on West Campus with the map in hand as the sun got lower and lower.

A bit of sprint O' practice on the WC map. Felt pretty good.

Hmmm, why is it that Attackpoint is defaulting to tomorrow's date (i.e. 10/29) even though it is today (i.e. 10/28)?

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Commute to/from work and a trip over to Dad's house to deliver a book. Dad had just baked some cookies. So, I ate some of them.

rowing 20:00 [2]

Hopped on the land boat, flipped on the TV, and got a big surprise. The Topeka PBS station is showing a Wallander mystery in the original Swedish. Cool.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Nothing more than the usual work commute (plus biking to the grocery store). I'm feeling a bit beat up - legs and back, mostly. Especially on the first day I ran like a klutz in the forest and fell down more than I'd have liked.

running 10:00 [2]

Shuffling around a bit to warm up.

Red course. Fun stuff once again. I moved a bit better. Seeing HP on the course quite a bit helped me push my out-of-shape-self a bit harder than yesterday. I also felt a lot better running in the forest. Some of that was a bit easier to run terrain. Some of it was practice at running in the terrain yesterday.

Really good event. Big thanks to Badger OC for a great job.

running 10:00 [1]

Shuffling around a bit to warm up.

orienteering race 1:10:00 [4]

US champs m45. Nice map, course and terrain. Felt a general lack of fitness but the terrain was gentle and didn't make a lack of fitness as big a chore as it would in rougher terrain. Walked a lot of uphills. Ran a relatively clean race. One bad control near the end but otherwise a decent run. In fact the navigation went better than expected.

orienteering 35:00 [3]

US champs model. Fun. Completely different technique needed when it was raining and I couldn't see the map.

Thursday Oct 22, 2009 #

cycling 1:15:00 [1]

Home to office. Office to the frame shop. Frame shop to home. Lots of riding in rain and wind. Fun, but I was actually getting a little chilled by the time I finally got home.

Wednesday Oct 21, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute + an errand (which involved riding in the rain).

Feeling a bit off today. Will get a bit of extra sleep.

Tuesday Oct 20, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Commuting, some work-related trips, and riding to/from the O' practice on West Campus.

orienteering 20:00 [2] ***

Ran a little bit of Fritz' draft course and then a bit extra. Fun. My mind is beginning to get back to thinking orienteering instead of thinking mapping.

Note to self: make "en kartpekar" for this weekend.

cycling 45:00 [1]

To/from work. Super-nice weather today. I enjoyed the fall colors on the ride home.

rowing 20:00 [2]

On the land boat.

cycling 40:00 [1]

The bike part of my O' training. I biked from home to the downtown map, ran an O' session, biked to the campus map, ran an O' session, then biked home.

This was two sprint courses that Mary designed for me. I focused on some specific habits - looking at the compass as I left each control, looking ahead in the terrain, and looking at the map frequently. It went ok, but I'm clearly a bit rusty. Fun. Here are the courses and QR tracks:

running 15:00 [2]

Jogging to/from the course on West Campus. Legs feeling a bit tired by the end.

I tested some of Fritz' course. I need to take a careful look at the map and give Fritz some feedback.

I did 40 legs today. That's good.

Saturday Oct 17, 2009 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging along the riverwalk as the sun came up. Nice.

Friday Oct 16, 2009 #

Note

Downtown San Antonio and the riverwalk would make for some interesting urban sprint orienteering terrain.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute. The trip home was, once again, in a steady rain with 40 degrees. It sounds a bit miserable, but actually it wasn't bad at all. My bike handles well on wet pavement, the fenders keep road spray off of me, and the lights give me a better chance of being seen by idiot drivers.

I think I need a bit better rain jacket and rain pants. The trash collectors have bright yellow Frogg Toggs: http://www.froggtoggs.com/

rowing 20:00 [1]

Some easy rowing on the land boat.

Tuesday Oct 13, 2009 #

cycling 1:30:00 [1]

Lots of commuting related cycling today. Home to work (at 5:20 a.m.), work back home to get a shower, home back to work, work back home (40 degrees and steady rain).

other 1:00:00 [3]

"Other" = trash throwing.

I did a ride along with a solid waste crew. We began with getting a bunch of tanks at apartments, including the place Maggi and Sanna lived on 9th Street and Meadowbrook (where Peggy lived). Then we did residential, with some commercial thrown in, between 19th and 23rd and Haskell and Mass.

It was certainly a good workout. Moving along the streets, climbing up and down the step on the side of the truck, dragging cans and carts to the truck, dumping cans, pushing tanks around. I expect I'll be sore tomorrow morning.

All in all, quite a lot of work. Also, quite interesting and, at times, fun.

I was lucky in that I got perfect trash throwing weather - overcast and about 42 degrees. Not hot, not cold. Dry, too.

Hanging on to the side of the truck as it drives around was fun. Just like I imagined when I was a kid and watched the trashmen go by.

Note

Strange schedule this week - work plus some travel. My plan will be to take it easy and get in just a bit of training. I should get in some good map study. I should also put some effort on to staying cold/flu free.

cycling 45:00 [1]

The normal commute + a few errands. I took a slightly different route in - took 11th street off the hill. Steep, fast and a bit scary with traffic.

Sunday Oct 11, 2009 #

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging on West Campus with Raymond and Fritz.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

O training on West Campus. We had short courses that were forked. We did 5 of them. Fun. Good practice.

Saturday Oct 10, 2009 #

running 1:00:00 [1]

Jogging around in some crappy forest at Clinton. I carried a map board and drew a few changes as I went. That kept the pace low, but required me to go into some places I wouldn't normally go. Chilly - 39 when we finished - but really nice in the forest.

Friday Oct 9, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

The usual commute. It was a little chilly this a.m. With yesterday's trip in the rain and today's in the cold, I've gained a reputation as being a bit of a nut job at work. I think I'll have a good chance to cement that impression if I bike to work next Tuesday when I need to be on the job at 5:45-5:50 a.m.

rowing 20:00 [1]

Watching "Cops" from the land boat after tracking Mary's progress on the trails at Clinton via live web tracking (instamapper.com). It was pretty cool.

Thursday Oct 8, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commute. It was a rainy day, so it was a good test of whether or not I'd be enough of a hard core bike commuter. I managed pretty well. I could probably use a better pair of rain pants and a rain jacket in a nice bright color.

running 40:00 [2]

Jogged at West Campus/Hutton Lake. I carried the map and spent some of the run working on high LAM frequency. At some point it got dark enough that I couldn't really read the map, especially through my rain covered glasses.

Wednesday Oct 7, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute - a bit chilly on the way in, some frost in the grass on West Campus. I also did a few errands on the bike, including going to get my flu shot. In a typical Lawrence experience, I chatted with a former Mayor in the waiting area.

running 20:00 [2]

Short run on West Campus (aka Hutton Lake). I planned to do a bit more, but I left work late and then cut the run short to get home and deal with some dough that was rising.

Tuesday Oct 6, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [3]

Work commute. I'm still at work, so I am pre-logging the return trip. I am (as usual) last on the agenda and the meeting is both full and moving slowly.

Monday Oct 5, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [3]

Work commute. I took a different route home because I had an end of the day meeting at the KU PD.

rowing 20:00 [3]

Watching football on TV while on the land boat. My fantasy team held on for the win.

cycling 50:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (30:00 @2)

Cycling to and from the overlook at Clinton.

running 1:00:00 [2]

I created a quick base map of the overlook area at Clinton. The base is 2 meter contours and the intensity image (all Lidar). I jogged around on the trails with the GPS as a way of getting an initial trail network mapped and to explore the area a bit. I think I will map the overlook as my winter mapping project. It isn't the best terrain (even for Kansas). There is a nice trail network, but the vegetation isn't very nice (tick, crappy forest and lots of the open areas are 3-5 foot deep grass). On the other hand, the area is convenient and parts of it are nice (some of the open areas are mowed grass and the trail network is good).

The plan is to map the area as an ISSOM map, probably 1:5,000 and 2 meter contours.

PTOC meet at Landahl. The woods are still thick but beginning to lighten up a bit. Landahl has lost of trails, so you could spend most of your time on trails. Cool temps helped.

I ran just below an honest effort and focused on a high frequency of LAM. That went pretty well. One thing I need to work on is getting back into the routine of glancing at my compass. I realized that I didn't look at it until the 6th control then looked at it again near the 8th. I need to get back to the routine of looking at the compass as I leave each control. Should be easy to fix.

I started a bit behind Matt S. and saw him off and on after the 4th control. That was fun.

Here's the map:

Note

Did a bit of fieldchecking when we got home - maybe 50-60 minutes.

Friday Oct 2, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Commuting. I barely noticed the cold air in the morning thanks to my warm gloves. I was happy. Some serious wind out there today. Supposedly the gusts reached 45 mph.

running 45:00 [2]

Easy jogging/exploring on west campus. I found a few more of the old trails through the forest.

Thursday Oct 1, 2009 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Work commute. Rained a bunch at night and then got warm. The rain had ended by the time I was on the road. The temps were high enough that I didn't need gloves to keep my hands warm. I was actually a little disappointed because I found my warm gloves yesterday and was looking forward to wearing my warmer gloves.

Note

Did some fieldchecking on West Campus. I made some good progress.
