cycling 50:00 [1]

Commuting to/from work. The annual return-of-the-students is starting. That means more strange drivers. Gotta be extra careful while biking.

Thursday Jul 30, 2009 #

cycling 55:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (25:00 @2)

Commuting on the bike. From the house to work. From work to the apartment for some final junk. For some reason I was completely drained by the last ten minutes of the trip to the apartment. It wasn't hot or anything. Just felt super tired when I got there. Oh well.

Tuesday Jul 28, 2009 #

Note

Another packing day. Tonight is the last night in our short-term-lease apartment. Feels really good.

Monday Jul 27, 2009 #

Note

Planned to do a short run. Thought better of it. Need to pack the apartment for the move.

Sunday Jul 26, 2009 #

Note

No training today. Instead, we spent a good bit of time at the new house. Began with reversing the refrigerator door so that it would swing open in the opposite way. Got about half way through when we looked at the instruction book. It had a section on how to reverse the door. Wait a minute, it has a note about how to reverse the door on a stainless steel model. See page 21. Go to page 21. "Doors on stainless steel models can't be reversed." Doh! Put the door back on. When this refrigerator needs replacing, we'll get one with the door that swings the way we want (or at least one that can be reversed). Got plenty of cleaning done. The previous owners didn't trash the place or leave it a mess. But it needed a bit of cleaning. It will feel good to move in later this week.

running 20:00 [1]

The time includes warming up and a bit of time picking up controls.

orienteering 17:00 [4]

Fritz organized the PTOC sprint at Loose Park. The course was a little over 3 km with three loops and a mass start. I think you'd call this a "Motala" course.

Fritz also updated the map a bit. He did a good job - no issues at all as a runner.

I managed to pull out a win ahead of Joe Barrett. I think he was about 1:30 back.

Post run, Gene, Fritz, Raymond and I stopped for coffee at the shop where Damon worked after his position was eliminated at Garmin.

running 25:00 [2]

Easy run at Burcham Park after work. A bit warm. I carried the map and read it quite a bit.

cycling 20:00 [1]

Did a short ride on the bike path with Mary. Fun.

Thursday Jul 23, 2009 #

cycling 1:20:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (40:00 @2) + (20:00 @3)

This is the total of three rides. First, I commuted to work. Second, biking from work over to the new house for a final walk through before closing. Finally, biking from the new house back to the apartment.

running 10:00 [1]

A bit of jogging around.

orienteering 20:00 [2] ***

A bit of orienteering. Ran a course on the downtown sprint map. Start/Finish at Sunflower (Mary bought her bike!) but most of the distance was in OWL. Raymond and Gene ran, too.

Post run, we headed over to Dempsey's for burgers and Smithwicks.

This week's special, the Ratatouille Burger was tempting (grilled eggplant, summer vegetables, red pepper-tomato jam and a chevrine goat cheese disc. (*vegetarian*) don't miss this perfect summer burger! ). But I went with the classic.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Low 70s and stead rain. It felt great! I did an easy hour on the river trails.

Sunday Jul 19, 2009 #

rowing 30:00 [2]

On the land boat while watching the final climb of today's TDF stage. That's a great way to spend time on the rowing machine and a great way to watch the TDF.

Note

Good, but lazy, day.

We went bike shopping. Mary has narrowed her favorite bikes down to the Giant Dash and Trek 7.2.

I put in some time working on the downtown sprint map. Drafting, which is not much fun, rather than fieldchecking. Are there people who actually like drafting?

A highlight of the day was a really nice lunch with Mary at Angler's (a recommendation from Raymond, seconded by the bike salesman at Sunflower). Fish tacos on the menu makes it easy for me to decide.

I expect this to be a lazy week. I'm presenting a report to the City Commission, which means a bit of stress and a late night on Tuesday. We're closing on the house on Friday. Lush.

running 20:00 [1]

Warming up and jogging around a bit after the race.

orienteering 15:00 [4]

PTOC sprint at JCCC. Paul C. set the course - really fun with route choices on most of the legs.

Amazingly cool weather - low 70s and low humidity. Raymond pointed out that this would be great weather in the UK, but for the other reason (i.e. nice and warm instead of nice and cool).

I felt quite good running. Pushed just a bit too hard on one leg and suffered on the next leg. I certainly had room for a better race, in particular begin a little faster into the circle. I should probably take a look at the QR data and see.

After my run I jogged out on the course with my phone and got a snapshot of Joe towards the end of the course.

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Took advantage of the nice weather by doing a bit of a ride in the middle of the afternoon. My legs felt a little worn from the run this a.m.

Friday Jul 17, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Commuting to/from work. Amazingly comfortable weather for this time of year, maybe 60 in the morning and about 76 when I biked home. Really felt good.

rowing 20:00 [1]

On the land boat when I got home but before the TDF coverage came on.

running 30:00 intensity: (25:00 @2) + (5:00 @4)

Not what was planned.

I was just beginning 15 minutes at an honest effort (as 70/20s) when I came across a dog on the trail ahead of me. Not just a dog, but a square headed dog. The dog was some sort of pit-bull mix. Had that pit-but head and body, but was a little small (small...or hungry?). The dog was on a leash but a person was not attached to the other end of the leash.

I had flashbacks to being torn up as a kid (dog got my leg, pulled me to the ground, chomped my back and then grabbed me by the neck). Lots of blood. Not fun.

Fortunately, this dog didn't go after me. I felt suprisingly calm as I wondered if it would be best to "feed" the dog my left arm or my left wrist (maybe the Garmin 305 on my wrist would slow him down?).

The dog kept a close eye on me, but let me walk away.

I went up to the levee and just jogged back to the car.

Wednesday Jul 15, 2009 #

Note

I did a bit of fieldchecking after work. Then I got a carry-out pizza and took it over to Summer. Eating pizza and watching the TDF.

Tuesday Jul 14, 2009 #

running 35:00 [1]

Ran on the trails at Clinton. The trails got 10 minutes or so of heavy rain about 20 minutes before I got there. By the time I started the sun was out. Even without the steamy trails, it was uncomfortable. The "heat index" was 106 (probably more, actually). Fun? Not really. Mostly just slipping on the mud and feeling drained by the conditions. Glad I did something, though.

Monday Jul 13, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)

Commute to/from work. My legs are getting used to riding.

rowing 20:00 [2]

On the land boat watching a re-run of a stage from the 2004 TDF.

Sunday Jul 12, 2009 #

cycling 55:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (15:00 @2) + (10:00 @3)

Biking to/from the downtown map. Once I was there, I did a bit less than two hours of fieldchecking. I got surprisingly tired. It wasn't very hot. Fun, though.

Saturday Jul 11, 2009 #

running 15:00 [1]

Jogging around to warm up. Took about 1 second to break a sweat. My legs felt pretty good as I jogged around a bit.

JCC sprint. Fun to be at an area I don't really know (trained on the map once, and the map has been updated a bit since then).

Had a reasonable run. Legs felt better than they have in a long time. Mind was working fine. Surprised to be so far ahead of Matt and Joe.

We drove to the meet with Raymond, who is in town for a couple of weeks. Fun to see him. We asked about how Lawrence has changed in 10 years. He said that he sees a lot more people out exercising - running and biking. It is something you wouldn't notice unless you'd been away for 10 years.

For anyone obsessed with precision, my time was actually 12:23 (or was it 12:24?, I can't remember).

orienteering 10:00 [1]

Shuffled around the course and checked out a few bits of the map.

Friday Jul 10, 2009 #

running 50:00 [2]

Ran on the river trail with Gene, Dick, Paul, Nancy, Rick H. and Raymond W. It was cool to see Rick and Raymond. Haven't seen either of them in a bit. Well, actually I saw Rick running downtown a month or so ago and the last time Raymond was in the US was only a few months ago.

Raymond was leading the pack when we met a mountain biker coming at us pretty quickly. Unfortunately, Raymond's English-instincts took over and he moved to his left, while the MTBer moved to his right. The met head on. Fortunately the cyclist was breaking and Raymond was slowing.

Temp in the mid 80s, but Texas-like humidity.

We grabbed some pizza at Pape Keno's after the run.

Breaking news....the city has fixed the leak I found a couple of days ago.

orienteering 20:00 [2]

Shuffled around the arboretum with a map in hand (ran Gene's course but took the controls in reverse order). Hot out there.

It was my first run in my trendy new Inov-8 shoes. They felt good.

Wednesday Jul 8, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Another commuting day. I should have gone for a run when I got home. But I was lazy. Sat in a chair and watched the TDF instead of going for a run. Lazy.

Tuesday Jul 7, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Commute to/from work. Pretty nice riding weather - little wind and low humidity. On the way home I came across a water line break. A small fountain was bubbling up through the pavement (looked like a drinking fountain in the middle of the road). I stopped to call it in. I hope it gets fixed before it gets much worse and wrecks the pavement. Might be too late.

Monday Jul 6, 2009 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

My legs felt worn out when I woke up this morning. After work I did a short bike ride. Felt good to be outside and moving.

rowing 15:00 [2]

I used the land boat until Mary got home from the pool.

Note

I did some mapping on the KU Campus. I worked in the area around the stadium, adding new parking lots, the practice facility, and the football building. It wasn't fun mapping. The fieldchecking was tedious - lots of compass work. And it is a bit sad that so much of the nice areas around Potter's have been turned into parking lots and buildings.

The sun was warm. I had sunscreen on my face and neck, but my arms got a bit more sun than they needed.

I took several breaks to watch the bike race. Most of the time I was mapping the elite women were racing. They were taking about 12 minutes a lap. The same three riders who got a big lead in the downtown races last night were alone in the circuit race today. I didn't see who won. I will need to check the paper tomorrow.

running 1:15:00 intensity: (30:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (15:00 @4)

Watching-bike-race-intervals. I had a route that let me see the riders 3 times on each lap. I caught them heading north on Mississippi, then jogged between Blake Hall and Watson Library and down to the little traffic booth, then I ran up the hill to the Chancellor's house. I saw the riders 3 times on each lap. The leg from the traffic booth to the Chancellor's house was a tough climb and I had to work hard to beat the riders.

With a few laps to go I finished my work out and just watched the racing. Fun. Tiring.

Note

I also did about 6 minutes of Seek N Spell, running around the campus looking at my phone.

Saturday Jul 4, 2009 #

rowing 40:00 [2]

Watching the TDF from the land boat (2 x 20 minutes).

Friday Jul 3, 2009 #

orienteering 30:00 [2] ***

Waited for the thunderstorm to pass by and for Mary to wake up...then went over to the arboretum and did a bit of orienteering. I ran the course Gene set for the race two weeks ago - once taking just the odd controls, then once taking just the even controls. Pace was easy. Fun.

cycling 50:00 [2]

Cycling to/from GSP-Corbin in the middle of the afternoon.

Note

I did a bit over an hour of fieldchecking for the downtown sprint map - the section around GSP-Corbin (which gives you an idea of how far away from downtown the downtowm map has become). GSP-Corbin is pretty interesting with lots of uncrossable walls and some hills. Even though it is just 200 x 200 meters, you could probably design an interesting little sprint course on just that section. It would probably take a map change.

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Commute to/from work. On the way home I worked a bit hard.

Wednesday Jul 1, 2009 #

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Commute to/from work. Nice day to ride, not so humid and light traffic.

I spent some time today daydreaming about a new commuting bike.
