running 35:00 [2]

A short, hilly jog at PNS. I climbed 720 feet (which is a fair amount in just 35 minutes...keeping in mind that the biggest hill is just 160 feet).

cycling 30:00 [1]

When I woke up this morning my plan was to do a 80-90 minute hilly trail run at PNS.

But as the day went on, I realized I felt like just going home and relaxing. I feel a bit mentally tired. I think it is from too much travel recently: drive KC -> St Louis; fly St Louis-> San Jose; fly San Jose -> KC (and because of bad weather in Chicago not getting home until 2 a.m); fly KC -> Dallas; and fly Dallas -> KC. With another flight Saturday (KC -> Stockholm), I decided I was travel weary.

So the plan changed to just coming home and relaxing.

But when I got home I decided to ride the trainer a bit while the pizza dough was rising.

orienteering 20:00 [4]

TJOC 6-point course. I had a nice run (still was something like 1-2 minutes behind Tom). Nice course with good variety and some interesting legs.

I nearly caught Dylan (who'd promised to break my legs if I caught up to him). I had in just in front of me leaving the last control and was going to put in an effort to beat him in (given that he's only about 18 I wouldn't have much chance against him in a sprint, but it'd be worth a try). 50 meters after the last control I landed on my ankle, twisted it a little, and stumbled. That killed any chance of beating Dylan in (but I still got him on elapsed time).

Note

Only ran one workout at TJOC.

If I'd woken up before 6 a.m., I was going to run the 5 K road run)...but I slept through it. Then I had to catch my flight before the afternoon's workout (something called Lans-O' -- after Lans Taylor who was setting up the course).

2 courses plus running back to the cabin at TJOC. The first course was a mass start course with a regular map. The course was fairly easy with several opportunties to simplify the orienteering by running on roads/trails around or by going straight towards major catching features. The second course was on a map with just roads and trails. The idea was that the first map gave you a chance to "over navigate" when all you needed to do was use the big features. The second course wouldn't let you "over navigate" since all it had was the big features. We timed everyone and looking at the different times let you see how much you improved.

I was glad to see that I didn't really improve (indicating that I wasn't over navigating to begin with).

Fun and interesting training course.

Two issues: (1) I didn't have my number (which is a no-no at TJOC), and (2) Tatyana put a control on the wrong bit of green.

I ran a bit of the first course with Ashley S. It is good to see her doing some orienteering.

Shadowing Stephen C. and Noah at TJOC. Shadowing is usually fun -- and it was this time. I saw some decent orienteering by both of the kids (and some wicked parallel errors, too).

Someone described Noah as "like Matt Cobb."

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

On the trainer for an hour. I watched a bit of cycling, but most of the time I was watching Dogtown and Z-Boys.

I'll leave for TJOC in a couple of hours. The current forecast is for highs in the low 90s, which is not too terrible.

running 35:00 [2]

Nice, short run at PNS. After several days off (and a good night of sleep) my legs felt really good.

Monday May 22, 2006 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging around downtown San Jose curing a break between sessions at the annual conference of the organization formerly known as N.A.L.G.A. I felt seg.

running 10:00 [2]

Some pre-race warm up.

Nice course and forest. Lots of booms and bad orienteering on my part (though bits and pieces of the race went fine). There is something to learn from today's race, but I'm not yet sure what it is.

Friday May 19, 2006 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up a bit before the UMSL sprint race.

orienteering race 15:00 [4] ***

Sprint race on the UMSL campus. Nice map, nice course. Lots of fun. I had a good race, losing little time to anything except being slow (lost a few seconds when I fell down after getting my map at the start!).

running 35:00 [2]

Trails at PNS. Saw some wildlife, including: an unidentified mammal (probably a ground hog, but I didn't get a good look), a fat squirrel, an Eastern Bluebird, and a pack of walking-stick-wielding serious hikers.

running 10:00 [4]

3 x 3:20 old man intervals on the trails on the east loop (which means I did some climb). Felt pretty good.

Monday May 15, 2006 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Just a bit of time on the trainer to break a sweat and move a little bit.

Sunday May 14, 2006 #

running 45:00 [2]

Easy jogging on the river trail in Lawrence. Saw lots of birds, including an Indigo Bunting and some Baltimore Orioles.

running 15:00 [4]

During the jog on the river trail I threw in 3 x 5 minutes at an honest effort (though just barely an honest effort). Felt ok, though my legs felt a bit of yesterday's running and, I think, the mapping (standing and walking) and maybe even standing around in the morning.

Note

Spent a couple of hours in downtown Lawrence watching the US Collegiate Cycling Champs -- really fun to watch. Met Mom there and took her to La Familia for M's-day lunch. Then I did an hour or so of KU fieldchecking.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Started the day with some time on the trainer while waiting for Mary to wake up (after she stayed up late to finish reading the latest Harlen Coben book).

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging on the road that goes south from SKP park (Lackman, I think) to warm up. I also had the chance to chat with Pete G. and give him directions to the meet site. It was a little tricky as they used the church parking lot instead of the park parking lot.

orienteering race 15:00 [4] ***

PTOC sprint at SKP. Nice course by Mike Shifman (as expected) and a fun event. I had a mostly good race and felt like I was moving ok, though I didn't feel very good.

After a bad sprint at W.P. (and a bad sprint at San Diego), I was glad to run well today.

orienteering 20:00 [3]
ahr:158

I re-ran the sprint course (from memory). I'd planned to run it with the map, but Dan Welch seemed to think I wouldn't be able to re-run the course without the map. So, I decided to show Dan that he was wrong.

Note

Spent about 3 hours fieldchecking the KU campus map.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Yesterday's day off was probably a good decision. I felt good (and no swelling in my knee) today.

I stopped at PNS on the way home and went up/down the rocky hill until I'd climbed 1000 feet. My legs felt very good.

running 15:00 [2]

Warming up at Bonner Park.

orienteering 15:00 [2] **

Two very short O' technique sessions. First, I did a course on the Bonner Park map with an emphasis on leaving controls. Second, I did a little tiny course on a air photo (from google maps) where I used individual trees as control locations. Fun and interesting.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Jogging at PNS.

At the end of the run I was rewarded with an Indigo Bunting spotting. The Indigo Bunting is probably one of the three most spectacular local birds (tied with the Bald Eagle and, of course, the Jayhawk).

running 10:00 [4]

3 x 3:20 old man LAM intervals on the trails at PNS.

Monday May 8, 2006 #

Note

No training today. Feet are a bit sore and beat up from Hudson Valley rocks. Also, I needed to mow the lawn.

Sunday May 7, 2006 #

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up.

West Point day 2. Mostly interesting orienteering and fun to have to adapt to three different mapping styles (I guess that is good training). I had a reasonably good race. Far from perfect, but not bad at all.

I got tired.

West Point A-meet - I ran M40.

Nice run. The few days of practice in the last week worked -- I felt reasonably comfortable running in the terrain and orienteered pretty well.

Lots of hills to go up.

running 10:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up before the sprint at Camp Buckner.

orienteering race 20:00 [4] ***

Sprint race. I wandered around the course, making some mistakes (including skipping one control).

On the bright side, the Law of Competitive Balance would suggest that I should run a lot better tomorrow.

Thursday May 4, 2006 #

Note

Spent a little time field checking the map of Stephen and Annette's house (after moving some furnitiure). The map isn't perfect, but it would certainly work for some sort of mini-O' event.

I ran at Bushy Ridge, Fahnestock. I re-ran a course (parts of it actually) that I think I ran at a training camp in the late 1980s.

The map is still in good shape -- some new trails and some vegetation changes.

Fun, fun, fun....It makes me wish I lived in the Hudson Valley (and was on permanent vacation). Back in the day, Snorkel and I used to drive up for a week of training on these maps. That was always fun, always good training.

I ran a control picking course at the map next to the Kent School (I think it is called Pond Mountain, but my copy of the map had the name cut off).

Very nice terrain and map. Light rain the whole time.

I kept the pace moderate.

orienteering 15:00 [2] ****

I re-ran a section of controls from the control picking course (but I took them in the opposite direction). When I'd run them the first time, I struggled with concentration and making sense of the map. I wanted to do it right.

Note

I also spent 90+ minutes hiking around with the map and looking at different features. It was a lot of fun (even in tthe rain). After about 30 minutes, I was picking out kolbottnar from a distance.

Running the course at....well, I can't remember the name of the map and I don't have it in front of me. It was something with a P.

Peter, George and I ran the course twice, taking splits so we could see how much faster it'd go the second time around. Peter started out first and hung tapes (in various locations, mostly in the center of the control circle).

Fun training.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

Checking out a couple of control locations and jogging to/from the start.

After the run, I sampled one of Peter's famous bacon cheeseburgers.

running 20:00 [2]

Jogged around a bit at the C.I.A. campus and in the forest north of the campus, which adjoins the FDR home. I also did 90+ minutes of hiking and spent 20 minutes playing with the dogs. So, despite just 20 minutes of jogging, my legs feel a bit shot.
