orienteering race 40:00 [4] ***
17c

Flying Pig -- middle distance race in M21. Not too terrible. Hans Fransson caught me very quickly and blew right by. Fun.

running 20:00 [2]

Jogging to warm up.

Thursday Mar 30, 2006 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some cycling in the basement. It felt good to move a bit after spending far too much of the day in the conference room at work.

Wednesday Mar 29, 2006 #

running 20:00 [2]

Slow, but not easy feeling, jogging at Bonner Park (warm up and back to the car after the course).

Mary and I met at Bonner Park after work. I designed a course for her, she designed one for me. I ran fairly hard (but moving really slow - legs heavy from yesterday, I guess). Fun.

running 1:20:00 [2]

Easy jogging at PNS. It was nice weather (again, in the traditional sort of way) and the park had a lot of forest rat watchers.

I climbed 1080, nearly all of it in the first 45 minutes.

Monday Mar 27, 2006 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Easy cycling. I should have waited a bit, then I could have watched the "Big Red" hockey game.

Sunday Mar 26, 2006 #

running 45:00 [2]

Warming up and then jogging trails back to the car at Wyandotte.

orienteering 10:00 [4] ***
7c

A sprint course (training, not a race) at Wyandotte.

running 1:35:00 [2]

Trail run at Rochcrusher. I carried the old O' map and read it most of the time. My legs felt tired the last 30 minutes.

Saturday Mar 25, 2006 #

orienteering 45:00 [2] ***

Checking potential controls/legs for the HCC trim course. The new map is nice.

running 45:00 [2]

Jogging around and exploring the map a bit. I looked at the map a lot, but I wouldn't call this "orienteering."

In the entire 90 minutes, I climbed 1020 feet.

cycling 45:00 [1]

Riding the trainer while watching the LSU-Texas game.

Friday Mar 24, 2006 #

cycling 40:00 [1]

On the trainer while watching basketball. Locally we got the Wichita State game with short updates on the much more exiting Villanova game. We got complete coverage of the last minute or so of the Villanova game. I didn't really have a favorite, but I was yelling at the BC players to watch the guy cutting to the basket on Villanova's last score. If they'd listened to me, they'd have won!

Thursday Mar 23, 2006 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Hilly-ish trail run at PNS. I'd planned to run at Wyandotte if I could get away from work a little early. I probably could have until I came across some intersting data on police departments in big cities...I ended up sitting at my desk studying the numbers and when I looked up at the time it was 5 p.m.

I climbed 1520 feet.

Wednesday Mar 22, 2006 #

cycling 45:00 [1]

Riding the trainer...thinking...and watching a bit of a Simpsons re-run.

Tuesday Mar 21, 2006 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Jogging at PNS on the way home from work. I did some Kansas-style snopulsning (we had an unusual March snow!). I climbed 1020 feet.

The last 20 minutes was extra easy because it was dark and I didn't have a lamp (so I stuck to the flat, wide trails).

Monday Mar 20, 2006 #

cycling 40:00 [1]

Easy cycling.

Sunday Mar 19, 2006 #

running 35:00 [2]

20+ warm up jogging and 15 slowly jogging back to the cabin.

Day 2 at Sid R. Another interesting course...except it took us into some real crappy stuff. Mostly fun, though.

I didn't eat enough in the first hour or so after running and then had a late lunch. Sloppy. I should be more careful about eating.

Storms kept us in DFW longer than we'd planned.

Saturday Mar 18, 2006 #

running 50:00 [2]

Time includes 20+ minutes of easy warming up and 30+ minutes of running back to the cabin and checking a few possible control location options for TJOC.

orienteering 1:05:00 [4] ***

Sid Richardson red course. Nice cool rain.

I felt strange physically (I slept soundly until 9:30 a.m which is unusual and an indication of something being wrong?).

Fun course.

cycling 30:00 [1]

I would normally do 60-90 minutes of running. But, I had a stressful day and came home feeling drained.

I did manage to complete some minor home repair (installing a new mailbox at the edge of the street). It wasn't much, but I'm always happy when I do anything "handy" and don't cause more harm than good.

Tuesday Mar 14, 2006 #

running 1:30:00 [2]
ahr:136

I shuffled around (slowly) on the trails at Wyandotte. I can tell I need to do more hills because the hills at Wyandotte look bigger than they used to. I climbed 1280 feet.

It got dark on me before I was done and the last ten minutes went extra slowly because I couldn't see where I was going and didn't want to poke my eye on a sappling.

I was able to get a nice view of tonight's penumbral eclipse of the moon.

Monday Mar 13, 2006 #

running 25:00 [2]

Easy jog at PNS. The park didn't get hit hard by the storms yesterday. That's good news.

cycling 30:00 [1]

When I got home I listened to a bit of the Bill Self Show and rode the trainer in the basement.

Sunday Mar 12, 2006 #

orienteering 45:00 [2] ***

Running some O' technique at Kill Creek. I kept the pace slow and easy. I felt pretty good, better than yesterday. Yesterday felt like a bit of a chore, but today felt close to normal.

running 50:00 [2]

Jogging before and after the technique training. I carried the map and read it quite a bit (but I won't log this as technique training). Fun.

We made it back to the car about 10-15 minutes before a hailstorm hit with hail stones that were close to tennis ball size. Lucky we weren't still out when the storm hit.

Saturday Mar 11, 2006 #

orienteering 55:00 [2] **
ahr:134

Park orienteering training at Bonner. I set a course with lots of turns (to force myself to have to pay more attention to the map) and jogged it slowly.

I didn't feel especially good or especially bad. I don't think I'll be any worse off tomorrow for having run today.

I climbed 180 feet.

cycling 35:00 [1]

Easy time on the trainer when I got home.

Friday Mar 10, 2006 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Easy while watching KU-OSU from Dallas.

I felt close to normal (which means I'm not as close to normal as I think, but moving in the right direction).

My plan is to take it relatively easy this weekend. Tomorrow will be up to 90 minutes or very easy running/cycling. If that goes ok, I'll do a bit more on Sunday, but still keep it very easy. I feel the need to get out in the forest and on a map.

Wednesday Mar 8, 2006 #

cycling 30:00 [1]
(sick)

I'm still not healthy, but I feel much better than I did yesterday and I felt the need to move a bit.

I rode the trainer in the basement and watched taped coverage of last summer's TDF.

Moving a bit felt good. It was also enough (probably) that I won't feel the need to move a bit tomorrow.

Picking up controls from yesterday. Tired.

PTOC had an 8-hour rogaine at Lake Jacomo. I drew a route that I figured would take me four hours, since I wanted a nice, slow run and didn't think I could run for 8 hours.

37 at the start, 39 at the finish, and plenty of cold rain made this fairly tough. I ran an hour or so harder than planned when I started to get cold.

Fun. Tiring.

Friday Mar 3, 2006 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Easy cycling. Just enough to break a sweat and feel like I've done a little something. Long run tomorrow.

Thursday Mar 2, 2006 #

running 1:35:00 [2]
ahr:124 max:146

Nice easy run at Wyandotte. I went by the car after about an hour to pick up my headlamp since it was getting to be too dark to run lamp-less.

I climbed 1420 feet.

Note

I logged my training and then noticed that I'm one minute behind Anna for the last 7 days. It is tempting to go ride the bike to fix that....but, that would be pretty stupid.

Note

A day off seemed like the right thing to do to honor Max Falkenstien.
