running 15:00 [1]
(injured)

Short jog around the neighborhood. It felt so-so. I can tell that I'm not running normally. I'll run again on Tuesday.

cycling 2:10:00 [2]

I took the MTB out on the Mill Creek trail. I began near the Kaw and went south (passing through SMP). I had a bit of headwind. My time out was 70 minutes, then just 60 to get back with the tailwind.

Fun. My legs got a bit tired near the end and my upper back got a bit sore (I'm not used to riding a bike for more than about 30 minutes at a time).

Another nice day -- low 60s and mostly sunny.

running 12:00 [1]
(injured)

Jogged around the neighborhood.

cycling 1:00:00 [2]

Did a couple of laps of the road at Wyandotte on the mtb. I pushed it a bit, having had so little physical work the last two weeks. It felt good mostly. Nice day to be riding - mid 60s and sunny and some wind.

cycling 30:00 [1]
(injured)

On the trainer in the basement and felt really good.

I'm going to try another jog (probably 10-15 minutes) tomorrow. I'll probably also take the mtb out for a ride on the roads.

running 10:00 [1]
(injured)

I put on the active ankle and went out and jogged for a mile. It felt ok. I hope it feels ok when I wake up tomorrow.

After I ran I did my exercises.

cycling 30:00 [1]
(injured)

I didn't run today. My ankle/foot was sore, stiff and swollen this morning. I figured some time on the trainer would be ok and it was. I'll try to run tomorrow.

Tuesday Oct 25, 2005 #

running 10:00 [1]

I went jogging. I'd jog about 100 meters and then walk 50. I was trying to run without limping. I think that I was jogging ok. I covered a bit less than a mile. I think I'll try the same thing tomorrow.

other 30:00 [1]

After my jog, I did my exercises.

Monday Oct 24, 2005 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I rode the trainer in the basement and it felt great. I still have some stiffness and swelling in the ankle, but riding didn't feel bad at all. It felt very nearly normal.

I'm thinking about trying to jog a little bit tomorrow.

I went for a walk/hike at Clinton SP. I probably shouldn't count a walk as training, but there you go.

I wore an active ankle and my ankle felt mostly ok.

I carried the map and read it quite a bit. It is remarkable how much the trails have changed. The mountain bikers have made a lot of little changes -- shifting the point the trail crosses streams, for example.

other 20:00 [1]

Leg strength exercises.

The measured swelling was the same today as yesterday.

I had another sound night of sleeping.

cycling 30:00 [1]

On the trainer in the basement, just like yesterday. I plan to ride again later today and to push the effort just a bit to see how that feels.

other 10:00 [1]
(injured)

Same as yesterday, some leg strength exercises.

cycling 40:00 [1]
(injured)

My second trainer session for the day. To keep it interesting, I popped in the video of the 1988 KU-OU game -- always inspiring. I pushed the effort compared to the last few times I've been on the trainer. It was close to a normal trainer effort. My ankle is feeling quite good -- though it still looks a bit icky.

The measured swelling was the same today as yesterday.

I got another good night of sleep.

Friday Oct 21, 2005 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

On the trainer. I took it easier than normal (which is saying a lot) and didn't put much pressure on my right ankle. It felt great.

other 10:00 [1]

Some leg strength exercises, followed by elevation and ice (all while watching the football game on TV).

Note
(injured)

Swelling down just a little from yesterday.

I slept perfectly last night.

Walking felt normal. I took a bit of a walk over my lunch hour.

Thursday Oct 20, 2005 #

other 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Light strength stuff...same as yesterday. I think I might try 10-30 minutes of cycling on Friday.

Note
(injured)

Measured swelling down a bit less than 0.5 cm.

I slept better, but still woke up a few times.

I felt like I was walking normally, Mary said I had a slight limp.

Wednesday Oct 19, 2005 #

other 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Same as yesterday.

Note
(injured)

No measurable difference in the swelling.

Woke up maybe 6 times due to pain in ankle. That's better than it has been.

Walking felt much better today than yesterday. That's really good. I'm hoping to go for a good walk on the weekend.

Tuesday Oct 18, 2005 #

other 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Some light PT -- basically some strength training for the legs. I also spent a few minutes pedalling the trainer slowly.

Note
(injured)

No change in the swelling measurement. But, parts of the ankle look a little less swollen.

I woke up a lot during the night, but perhaps not as much as last night. Maybe I'll sleep well tonight.

Walking felt much better today.

Monday Oct 17, 2005 #

Note
(injured)

Swelling was down a little bit this morning.

I didn't sleep very well (though my shoulder felt a lot better last night).

My ankle feels much better today. At work today I felt like I was walking almost normally (if a bit slowly). But then a co-worker saw me and said, "what is wrong? Did you hurt yourself?" I guess I wasn't walking as well as I thought.

CRIME continues.

Sunday Oct 16, 2005 #

Note
(injured)

I'm spending the day resting and icing my ankle. It seems like it is doing a bit better than yesteday. The swelling is down a bit. It doesn't hurt as much.

I measured a point on the ankle and found that it is swollen by about 2 cm compared to the uninjured ankle. I think I'll check everyday to see how it recovers.

Another thing I should track is whether or not I wake up in the middle of the night when I move and the ankle hurts. Last night I woke up a bunch of times.

The tight feeling is still there, but it seems a bit less severe than it did yesterday.

My current plan is to take tomorrow off. If it feels ok, walk a little on Tuesday (pushing the mower around might be what I do), ride the trainer on Wednesday, and then consider a short/easy jog on Thursday.

running 10:00 [2]

Warming up. In the past, I've never logged my warmup runs. But, I've gotten sloppy with warming up before races and I figure if I start to log it I'll pay a bit more attention. Today's warm up was short but I broke a good sweat.

PTOC event on at Jacomo. The woods were thick, so the strategy was to pick routes that minimized woods. I felt good and was having a nice run when I turned my right ankle just before the third control.

I walked back to the finish, taped it up tight, and iced it. I'm not sure how badly the ankle is injured. But, I decided to call off the trip to Columbia for tomorrow's race.

Note

Another Snorkel update: Snorkel ran for 29 minutes at Rockbridge today. I also got a report on his weight, but I consider that highly classified information that I can't post on Attackpoint.

Friday Oct 14, 2005 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I put in an easy 30 minutes....when I was done, I had a voice mail message from Snorkel who'd run 30 minutes. Wow, it isn't often that you get out-trained by Snorkel, these days.

Thursday Oct 13, 2005 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

Mostly going up and down the rocky hill at PNS. It was fun (nice weather and almost nobody in the park). My legs felt great. Usually that happens when I'm going slow, so I'll guess that I wasn't moving fast. I climbed 1300 feet.

Early in the run a helicopter came buzzing overhead, flew three large circles, then flew off. I think it might have been the KCPD police helicopter. Maybe they're upset about the audit we're doing and they wanted to intimidate me. Strange.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Snorkel Update: Snorkel reportedly ran 18 minutes today. Good, Snorkel. Good.

Tuesday Oct 11, 2005 #

running 1:10:00 [2]
ahr:137

I jogged at PNS on the way home from work. It was fun -- my legs felt good and the weather was perfect. There were a couple of groups of people watching the forest rats in the park.

I also did 2 x 4x 30 seconds of "old man" sprints. I've been doing them weekly on a part of the trail that is fairly rocky and winding. I decided to ease off the pace a bit and run them on a flatter, straighter section of trail. I was a bit worried that my knee swelling last week had something to do with the "old man" sprints.

I climbed 500 feet.

On the trainer -- easy.

Sunday Oct 9, 2005 #

Control picking at Knob Noster. The forest was ok, not the best but not so bad. In paces you had to run through chest deep grass. I kept the running slow and easy and worked on paying attention. That went ok, except for one little bobble that cost more time than a little bobble because it screwed up my route to the next control (and on top of that I misread the course and ran to the wrong next control).

I climbed 760 feet.

running 20:00 [2]

Some easy jogging in the forest.

Saturday Oct 8, 2005 #

running 1:25:00 [2]

Trails at Wyandotte. Really nice weather for a run -- low 40s at the start and about 50 by the end. I climbed 1560 feet.

Thursday Oct 6, 2005 #

running 1:15:00 [2]

Jogging at PNS. Nice weather (finally) with temps in the mid 50s. It felt great. I saw a load of forest rats and a few turkeys. I climbed 1000 feet.

My left knee is a bit sore.

Wednesday Oct 5, 2005 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy cycling in the basement. It was fun. Usually it isn't fun to ride a trainer, but for some reason it was fun tonight.

Tuesday Oct 4, 2005 #

running 45:00 [2]

I got a blister on my left heel near the end of the race on Sunday. It didn't bother me much. But then about 4 p.m. yesterday it started to hurt. The heel seemed a bit swollen and looked red. Infection?

I woke up in the middle of the night and it felt worse. I tossed and turned, thinking about the infection that Mark M. got a few years ago. He ended up wearing a little pump in a pack on his waist. Every now and then the pump would click on, pumping antibiotics directly into an IV tube attached to his arm. I imagined I'd wake up in the morning disoriented with my leg swollen and red from the knee down.

I woke up and the foot looked ok.

I ran today and, while I could feel the heel now and then, it didn't seem to be a problem. A few hours after running and it still feels fine.

I ran at PNS and included 8 x 30 seconds of "old man" sprints.

I'm sick and tired of warm weather. It was mid 80s and humid when I ran today.

Sunday Oct 2, 2005 #

orienteering 20:00 [2] ***

I went for a jog. I carried the map and read it closely. I worked on thinking the way I should, instead of the way I did yesterday. It felt ok. I could tell it was going to be uncomfortable to run (warm and humid).

SLOC red course at Cuivre River -- 9.1 km and hot/humid conditions made it tough. I felt drained and couldn't push. Running was more difficult than I expected. In places the forest was a bit thick and in places the footing was a bit rough. I don't think it'd be a problem if I'd had a few weeks of forest running in my legs. The last control wasn't in the right place when I got there.

I put out three controls for the training course at Cuivre River. I was paying close attention to the map and not thinking about how fast I was moving.

Not moving well; not thinking well. I stopped before the end of the course when my watch hit one hour. Sloppy thinking and warm conditions made this a lot tougher than it might seem.

I jogged out and picked up two flags. I took it easy and made an effor t to read the map carefully. I was feeling a bit tired and really sleepy.
