cycling 30:00 [1]

I began the day with some easy time on the trainer. It felt good and was the perfect preparation for a relaxing with a good cup of coffee (Peets holiday blend).

running 50:00 [2]

A long, slow warm up plus about ten minutes of jogging after I'd run the O' course.

I ran a control picking course at Wyandotte and kept a decent pace. It felt good and was fun (though I boomed one control when I let my mind wander a bit and wasn't careful with what I was doing). Another warm day (60 or so).

Thursday Dec 30, 2004 #

running 20:00 [2]

I jogged around a bit. Really warm weather -- something like 68.

Wednesday Dec 29, 2004 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

A hilly, but slow, run on the dark trails at PNS. Strange weather today, hazy and warm (50 or so) with a forecast of nearly 70 tomorrow. Yuck. I'd like some snow. I cut the run a bit short so I could get home a bit earlier. My plan had been to run 75-90 minutes.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Once I got home, I put in some time on the trainer.

Tuesday Dec 28, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer, watching KU b-ball on tape.

Monday Dec 27, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

After a fairly hard week (and weekend) a couple of very easy days are called for. I put in some time on the trainer. Tomorrow will be the same thing or a complete rest day.

Sunday Dec 26, 2004 #

running 30:00 [2]

Jogging to/from my car.

running 1:50:00 [2]

I ran, re-ran actually, parts of the Possum Trot course at Weston Bend. I took it easy. The north part of the map isn't very good. The woods up there are thick and thorny, too. I wouldn't say I was having much fun for the first few controls. But once I got to the better parts of the map I had fun. I didn't push the pace. I walked some of the hills.

Saturday Dec 25, 2004 #

cycling 40:00 [1]

Watching the Bill Self show while riding the trainer. Legs felt a little tired.

running 40:00 [2]

Mary and I ran near the river in Lawrence (north of town, we parked at the end of the gravel road from the Midland Farm Store). I used to run in this area a lot, but I guess that was back in the mid 80s. I was hoping to spend some time on a sand bar, but the sand bars were all overgrown with grass and sapplings. I ran in the woods on the island a bit. My legs felt tired from yesterday's hills. Mary said it was fun to run here today.

I ran at Wandotte. Like last week, I stuck to the forest as much as possible (all but about 15 minutes) and made an effort to climb lots of hills. The first 10-15 minutes in the forest I stumbled and tripped a lot. I wonder why. The last 10-15 minutes in the woods I stumbled and tripped a lot. I guess that is from getting tired. I carried the map, but this wasn't technique training. I'd say I had fun, but not FUN!!

running 40:00 [2]

Cooooooold out there. I ran around the neighborhood to the PHHS track where I put in 5(?) x 300m/100m.

Wednesday Dec 22, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

A quick spin on the trainer.

Tuesday Dec 21, 2004 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

I stopped at PNS on the way home from work and jogged around on the trails with my headlamp. When I left for work this morning I heard a weather report that the high would be 38. What they didn't tell me was that the high would be before noon and it'd be getting cooler all day. So I didn't pack my jacket. Dumb. I was a bit underdressed for the weather. I didn't see so many forest rats at PNS tonight, just 3.

Monday Dec 20, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

A little time on the trainer watching a tape of the KU-South Carolina game. My legs felt fine, but my mind felt a bit worn out.

Sunday Dec 19, 2004 #

running 2:30:00 [2]

Fritz and I did a long, slow trail run at Clinton State Park. We carried maps, but I hardly glanced at mine. Fritz did a fair amount of map reading, I think. Quite cold when we started (maybe 14?) and up to almost 20 by the end. With almost no wind it didn't really feel cold except for the first few minutes. I felt fine, but the last 20 minutes or so my legs felt tired and I stumbled a bit on some rocks on the trails. On the turnpike on the way home Rick and Debbie Hermesch drove by me.

running 1:40:00 [2]

I ran at Wyandotte. I carried the map and planned where to run, but I wouldn't call it technique training. I looked for hills (plenty of them at Wyandotte) and stuck to the forest as much as possible. I'd guess I did about 20 minutes of trails and open areas, otherwise I was in the forest. Fun.

Ho hum.

Thursday Dec 16, 2004 #

orienteering 1:30:00 [2]
ahr:136

Long, but slow night O' practice at SMP. I set a course that went to lots of features I'd never been to. It was fun, made the familiar park feel new. Unfortunately I went to one area where the map was really strange. I lost confidence in the map and didn't orienteer well for about 15 minutes. About half of tonight's course was in park terrain. My legs felt tired by the end.

Wednesday Dec 15, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Under normal circumstances I'd do an easy jog or 30 on the trainer. Since circumstances are normal, I did 30 on the trainer.

Tuesday Dec 14, 2004 #

running 30:00 [2]

The plan was to run hills on the trails at PNS. I forgot about the hunt. PNS was clsoed for a deer hunt. I got a chance to chat with a hunter, learning everything I ever wanted to know about bow hunting. Instead of running in the park, I waddled around the Park College track until my mind was numb (took just 30 minutes).

Monday Dec 13, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

A day with no running seems the responsible thing to do. Complete rest might have been good, but my legs felt good and 30 minutes on the trainer is pretty close to nothing.

Sunday Dec 12, 2004 #

running 1:10:00 [2]
ahr:143

Running at Wyandotte, mostly on trails but some in the forest. I ran a course that looped clockwise around the lake. This part was easy, long legs.

orienteering 25:00 [4]
ahr:159

The course I ran had four little sections with three or four short legs. I ran these sections hard, paying a lot of attention to the orienteering (for the long legs I didn't pay so much attention to the map, it was more of a run). I went in some crappy stuff, but it was still fun.

Saturday Dec 11, 2004 #

orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

Corridor O' course at Kill Creek. I took it easy as I was hanging out tapes. One control is in a really sketchy area with new trails and thick forest.

running 1:00:00 [2]
ahr:138

After putting out all the tapes, I jogged around the park a bit, mostly on trails. The last 20 minutes -- and anytime I was going up -- my legs felt a bit slow.

Friday Dec 10, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I began the day with some time on the trainer.

running 1:50:00 [2]
ahr:142

I ran in the forest (maybe 15 minutes on trails, the rest in the woods) at Weston Bend. I carried the map and read it now and then. I ran a fairly hilly route. I felt good. I wasn't going fast, but by about 90 minutes I was tired.

Thursday Dec 9, 2004 #

running 50:00 [2]

Jogging around at SMP (to and from the car).

orienteering 25:00 [4]
5c

A short night O' course in the bit of woods around the test loop. I did a corridor course which made the orienteering interesting. I was also thinking about keeping the pace up. So I didn't pay as much attention to map reading as I should have. I had two controls where I got sloppy and lucky. I had a boom of a minute on another control. Only 5 controls and missed 3 of them...that ain't good.

Wednesday Dec 8, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer.

Tuesday Dec 7, 2004 #

running 50:00 [2]

PNS is closed this week for a deer hunt. If PNS were open I'd have done a hilly trail run. Instead I ran around the neighborhood. I came across a couple of tvaettbjornar.

running 10:00 [4]

I also came across the Park Hill HS track and put in about ten minutes at an honest effort (running 300 meters, then walking 100 meters, then repeating).

Sunday Dec 5, 2004 #

orienteering 1:43:00 [4]

The Trot at Camp Naish. I had a decent race. Platt won in about 88 minutes (I was 103). I finished 4th, a bit over a minute behind Eric Buckley (damn, he gained on me in the lifetime rankings). Lots of fun, really nice course and good map. I finished before the rain got really heavy. Only problems were a couple of hard falls (right shoulder again) and a stick in the eye. Great event, I'm looking forward to next year's Trot already.

Saturday Dec 4, 2004 #

running 1:00:00 [2]

Putting out and picking up controls at Tall Oaks for the annual Kansas Champs. Nice day.

Thursday Dec 2, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

The plan was to do a short (sprint?) night O' at SMP. I charged my lamp. I printed the map. I was ready. But I forgot to bring my contact lenses to work. I don't mind running day O' with glasses but I don't really like night O' with glasses (they don't fit as well with the headlamp). I decided it was a sign to take it easy and rest my legs for this weekend. So I did some biking on the trainer while watching a TDF tape.
