orienteering 2:00:00 [2]

Snorkel and I did a long run at Kill Creek. We re-ran the red course from a few weeks ago, then re-ran the mtb course (taking it in reverse order). We didn't take the O' part serious, just jogging along and chatting half the time. Fun. I got a bit tired around 1:40.

Mary and I went up to Weston Bend. After a bit of hiking, we did some O' practice. I set a four point course and started ahead of Mary, hanging mini-markers. Then I ran it again, taking different routes and collecting the mini-markers. It was really fun, except for having to run through some stinging nettles. I don't ever recall nettles being in the forest this late in the year. Does it take a hard frost to finish them off? Maybe so. I climbed 620 feet.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some time on the trainer. After riding I was at 169.8 pounds -- not bad considering I didn't feel dehydrated.

Friday Oct 29, 2004 #

Note

I spent some time icing my left knee. It got stiff and a bit swollen while I was sitting in the theater at KU (watching my sister in Lysistrata.

running 1:10:00 [2]

I ran at PNS on the trails. I spent nearly the entire time going up and down the rocky hill. I ran until it got too dark, then made my way slowly back to teh car. I climbed 1300 feet.

Note

When I got home from running I did an unofficial weight check - 169.4. It'll be above 170 at tomorrow mornings check, but it was nice to see a sub 170.

cycling 30:00 [1]

A little bit of time on the trainer.

running 1:05:00 [2]

I ran on the trails at PNS until it got too dark. I climbed 760 feet.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some time on the trainer when I got home from PNS. I watched a bit of the St L-Boston game.

orienteering 45:00 [2]

Mary, Snorkel and I went to Tall Oaks to test some control locations and legs for Fritz' Kansas Champs course. The map is so-so (I knew that, of course).

orienteering 20:00 [2]

I jogged around the white course.

Note

I spent about 90 minutes fieldchecking at Tall Oaks. I changed a few trails. I had a camelbak and drank a good bit of water (sunny and around 70). When I got home I stood on the scale...170.8. If I hadn't had the water I'd have been under 170. I wouldn't count that, though. My official weigh-ins take place in the morning.

cycling 30:00 [1]

On the trainer, watching football highlights.

Local meet at Blue and Gray. Rough forest. Just before I started, Dan came walking up. He'd run the first two legs then got a thorn in his knee. So he stopped. But by the time he got back to the start he seemed to decide he ought to run a bit. He shadowed me around the course. We took it hard, but not race effort (forest was just too crappy to really feel motivated to push). Blue and Gray is a lot more fun early in the spring (and before the ice storm of a couple of years ago).

running 15:00 [1]

Fritz and I jogged around the white course. Fritz began the day with a 5K cross country race. He ran the red course at Blue and Gray and jogged the white. Tomorrow he's planning to run a trail marathon

cycling 1:00:00 [1]

When I got home I got on my mtb and did a bit of a road ride. I rode up Ambassador and covered a bit of the bunny loop. The strong west wind was a bit tiring. I felt pretty good.

Thursday Oct 21, 2004 #

running 1:10:00 [2]

I jogged around on the trails at PNS. I felt better than yesterday, but still a bit stiff. I climbed 680 feet.

cycling 30:00 [1]

I did some biking on the trainer when I got home. I watched a bit of the Houston-St L. ball game.

running 15:00 [1]

Easy jogging to warm up.

orienteering 30:00 [3]

I ran a park O' course at Bonner Park. I set the course for an OK training session a couple of years ago, but I'd never run it. It was fun, though my legs still felt a bit stiff.

I shuffled around PNS and the sports fields above PNS. I took it easy as my legs felt a bit heavy. Lots of forest rats out tonight. Park Hill was playing soccer at the fields next to the parking lot. That meant I got to listen to the PA system playing "who let the dogs out?" and "Ole, ole, ole, we are the champs..." I guess that'll make me mentally tougher. I climbed 580 feet (which is quite little for an hour + at PNS).

cycling 30:00 [1]

I got home and figured I'd break out some food and sit in the chair watching Seinfeld re-runs....then I changed my mind and put in enough time on the trainer to break a sweat and make my legs feel a bit better.

M40 at Telemark. Another fun day. The course seemed more interesting than the first day and I had a better run. Still, I wasn't moving fast enough. All in all, a great event.

M40 at Telemark. Fun, despite a 2 minute mistake early on. The cold, wet weather made the woods a bit slower than they'd be if dry (or if more leaves were down). That made trail routes a bit more attractive. I was working hard, but moving slow.

Sprint O' at Telemark. Nice course with lots of orienteering (though not especially difficult orienteering).

Friday Oct 15, 2004 #

orienteering 35:00 [3]

Jogged around on the model event map at Telemark. I found all the controls (8?) and spent some time testing some ideas.

running 30:00 [2]

I ran at PNS on a nice, cool day (light drizzle). I felt fine. But after about 20 minutes I didn't feel like running. Not sure why. Anyway, I stopped and went home. I climbed 440 feet.

I started with a loop around Wyandotte Lake, then headed east on Wolcott Rd./K5 (?) toward Leavenworth. Perfect weather for biking and a nice route. I was buzzed by a stealth bomber at the lake (apparently it was flying over the track as part of the pre-race stuff for the Nascar race). I climbed 1520 feet.

PTOC meet at Kill Creek. I did 62:54 for the red course. The terrain was thick. On a couple of legs we went through fields of grass that was taller than me. I ran ok but the last couple of K I was just worn out (mentally) from fighting through the yuck. I climbed 360 feet.

MTB O' at Kill Creek. I had fun. I suffered because of my weak bike handling skills (for the leg on the roughest trail I had to push/carry my bike for a good 15-20 minutes). Fritz beat me by 6 minutes (I got him on the regular O' course, though). Gene probably would have beaten me, except he forgot to think about orienteering and made a couple of big mistakes. I climbed 560 feet.

cycling 30:00 [1]

I spent enough time on the trainer to break a good sweat. The strange injury I picked up in Maine seems to have gone over. I didn't wake up with pain in my shoulder/chest last night for the first time in about two weeks.

Thursday Oct 7, 2004 #

running 50:00 [2]

Jogging around on the roads at Wyandotte in a nice, cool rain. My legs felt good at the start, a bit pounded by the end. I climbed a total of 440 feet.

running 15:00 [4]

5 x 3 mintues at an honest effort with short (one minute) rests.

Tuesday Oct 5, 2004 #

running 1:15:00 [2]

An easy, but hilly, run at PNS. The weather was nice and cool and the park was full of turkeys and deer. I climbed 1200 feet.

Monday Oct 4, 2004 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some time on the trainer to loosen up my legs a bit and break a sweat.

Day 2 M40 at Rockhouse Mountain. Another thrashing by Mihai and another decent run. I lost time on two legs when I started thinking about running instead of thinking about where I was going. I ran with brand new O' shoes and survived with no blisters. I had two sets of insoles in the shoes to adjust the fit (the shoes were a bit too big) and provide some extra support and cushion for my sore feet.

orienteering 1:05:00 [4]

Day 1 M40 at Hogencamp Mountain (the southern part of Surebridge Mountain). I had a nice run, but felt like I was fighting to run in the rocks and get through some deadfall.
