running 2:40:00 [2]

Steet O' 3-hour rogaine in Lawrence (using Jayhawks as control points). I went to all but one control. My plan was to be out two hours, but I didn't stick to my plan. Over two hours, mostly on roads, is probably not the best thing to do the day before going to a training camp. But, it was a fun thing to do. Avg. h.r. 143.

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer.

Note

I'll get in a good bit of exercise the next few days. Tomorrow is a 3-hour urban score O' in Lawrence. Then I'm at TJOC for four days.

running 40:00 [2]

I jogged around the neighborhood a bit. It didn't feel especially good.

Wednesday May 28, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Spent an easy 30 minutes on the trainer. My hip and knee are still a bit sore from the weekend. I think it'll be fine tomorrow.

orienteering 46:00 [4]

I ran the second leg of the OK relay team at Harriman. This was a lot of fun -- interesting courses, nice maps and terrain, mid-50s and steady rain, and a head-to-head race with Nadim. Nadim and I went out a second apart and crossed the line a second apart. We saw each other a lot. Nadim moved a bit better than me, but no so much better that I couldn't keep up most of the time. I felt better than I did yesterday (and much better than I did Saturday). My run was mostly clean. I got tired after the spectator control.

orienteering 1:41:00 [4]

I ran and navigated much better today than yesterday. I'm still a bit off, but I felt good most of the way. I struggled a bit on the last loop, though.

orienteering 52:00 [4]

Fun...but not a good performance. I boomed three controls and fell on my knee (no real damage, I think, but the knee is stiff). The course was interesting and difficult. I ran slowly, which would have been ok if I hadn't missed a few controls. Tomorrow will be a big challenge for me -- long course with more hard running, I expect.

Friday May 23, 2003 #

orienteering 20:00 [2]

Jogged around a bit on the model event map at Harriman.

Wednesday May 21, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I'm a bit busy this evening. So, I took it easy and did 30 minutes on the trainer.

running 45:00 [2]

Jogging around at PNS. The weather was very nice for running -- cool and dry.

running 15:00 [4]

15 minutes of 70/20s on the trails at PNS. My avg. h.r. was 168.

running 1:10:00 [2]

Jogging around on the trails at Weston Bend...

running 20:00 [4]

..with 4 x the big hill. My splits and avg. hr. for the uphill: 5:03 (155), 5:07 (160), 5:09 (158) and 4:57 (160).

Saturday May 17, 2003 #

cycling 55:00 [1]

Took my mountain bike out for a couple of laps of the bunny.

Friday May 16, 2003 #

Note

Traveling home after a week in Stockton. The flight out of Stockton was a couple of hours late, so I missed a connection in Phoenix. The flight to KC was on an oversold RJ with bad air conditioning. It is nice to be home.

Tuesday May 13, 2003 #

running 25:00 [2]

Shuffled around Stockton, CA a bit.

Sunday May 11, 2003 #

running 2:00:00 [2]

I spent the day exploring at Yosemite. I drove up first thing in the morning, parked the car, bought a USGS map and spent the next 7+ hours on my feet exploring. Most of the first 3 hours was running, most of the last 5 hours was hiking.

Jogging around at Parkville before and after...

...15 minutes of 70/20s at ELP. It was humid and a bit over 80 degrees. Lots of sweat.

I was planning to run at Parkville after work. On the drive to Parkville, the NWS was reporting tennis ball-size hail heading toward the town. That didn't sound like good running weather.

Instead I rode my trainer in the basement while watching a bike race on TV (Liege-Bastogne-Liege).

As I'm writing this, another line of big storms are heading this way (a tornado apparently hit an apartment complex at 23rd and Wakarusa in Lawrence). Meanwhile big storms went a bit north of us. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I jogged around PNS on the way home from work. On the way to the park, I passed a couple of buildings that were destroyed by the tornado. I was curious to see if PNS had any damage. It didn't. I'm glad.

running 1:10:00 [2]
ahr:132

I took an easy run on the bunny loop (saw one bunny). My legs have felt a bit off the last couple of days (post long-O'), but they feel a lot better after running tonight.

Long O' at CNYO. I orienteered like a beginner. I wasn't really ready for the race. I wasn't concentrating well. While I got quite tired, I felt better physically than I expected (much better, for example, than at West Point). I guess the lack of hills helped.

The flight home was interesting. We flew parallel to the wall cloud that brought tornados to Kansas City. Watching the storm and lightning while the RJ bounced around was a new experience (Peter wouldn't have enjoyed it). On the drive home from the airport, I was wondering if my house would still be standing. It was. I was glad. Parts of KC got hit bad (something like 40 people injured and one killed).

The preliminary stage of the short champs at CNYO. I had a nice, but not perfect, run. I had a hesitation or two and on one leg I ran a bit too hard (and had to slow down a bit on the next leg). Lots of fun.

Stage 2 of the short O'. Another fairly nice run. I struggled with the rougher areas of the forest. I struggled a bit with some of the contours. Overall, I was satisfied with the day. I'd like to be running stronger and I should be reading the map a bit more actively.

running 20:00 [2]

A nice short run from home.
