orienteering 25:00 [2]

Peter set up a beginner clinic/score O' at West Campus. I helped a bit with set up, then jogged around the course (that's the 25 minutes), and picked up controls later.

orienteering 53:00 [4] 6.5 km (8:09 / km)

PTOC red course at Lake Jacomo. Just before I started Eric S. and Dick N. finished, complaining about the crappy forest. So, I ran expecting the worst. It was a bit rough. Jacomo is one of the places that suffered a lot of damage from the ice storm last year. I ran ok and beat a slow-moving Snorkel by 5 minutes.

PTOC night O' at West Fleming (in Lee's Summit, hometown of Jeff Graves). The course was a score O' with a lot of controls, so it felt like control picking. I doubt I picked an optimal route, but I found them all and orienteered faster than the others. I finished in time to catch the last 5 minutes of Bob and Max's coverage of the game. Gene pointed out that when we're orienteering and KU is playing "wildcats" (K-State or Arizona) to reach the final four, KU always wins.

Rooooooooock, chaaaaaaaalk, Jaaaaaaaaayhaaaaaaaaaaaaawk, KKKKKKKKKKK, UUUUUUUUU.

cycling 30:00 [1]

A bit of easy trainer time.

Thursday Mar 27, 2003 #

running 50:00 [2]

At Parkville Nature Sanctuary. This include 5 x 40/20 in the forest.

running 10:00 [4]
ahr:169

Did the east loop (clockwise as usual) at a decent effort. The trail was in good shape and I felt good, so I pushed a bit and ran it in 9:52.

Tuesday Mar 25, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

The plan was for some running at Parkville. It didn't work out. Instead, I spent a few minutes on the trainer in the basement.

Sunday Mar 23, 2003 #

running 15:00 [2]

Jogging around to warm up and get to the start triangle.

orienteering 1:15:00 [2]
ahr:141 7c

Ran a course at Kill Creek. Mary designed the course to have longish legs with some route choice. I felt a bit tired and the weather was warmer than I like.

Saturday Mar 22, 2003 #

orienteering 31:36 [4]
ahr:172 12c

Short "red" course at Prarie Center. I worked fairly hard and got Dan by a bit over a minute (might have been a bit more if the fourth control had been in the right spot). It was mostly fun.

orienteering 30:00 [2]

I jogged around the green course at Prarie Center.

Friday Mar 21, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy time on the trainer. Tomorrow is a PTOC meet at Prarie Center. We haven't run there in a few years. It should be fun.

Thursday Mar 20, 2003 #

running 40:00 [2]

I stopped at Parkville on the way home and jogged around a bit. Another perfect running day -- 40, no rain. I saw loads of deer and a pack of turkeys.

running 10:00 [4]
ahr:161

I did ten minutes (10:57) at an honest effort. I did one time around the east trail loop. I need to check the time to see how it compares to the last few times I ran the loop at an honest effort.

Wednesday Mar 19, 2003 #

running 55:00 [2]

I ran at Parkville on the way home. I threw in 5x40 seconds in the forest plus 4x1 minute up a decent hill. Perfect running weather -- 40 and light rain, but the clouds meant it got dark in the woods a bit early. No sign of Snorkel at the Riss Lake hill.

trainer.

Monday Mar 17, 2003 #

running 40:00 [2]

Running around with the map at Rockcrusher. Most of the run was warming up and then running back to the car. But, I also did some short intervals in the woods (5x40 seconds).

orienteering 45:00 [2]
ahr:145 10c

Felt almost normal today when I ran at Rockcrusher. I made one big boom -- a good 4 minutes when I ran up the wrong reentrant in the green. The weather was warm again today but not quite as warm as the weekend (today was about 70 and cloudy). The ticks are out.

Sunday Mar 16, 2003 #

running 35:00 [2]

Warming up and then jogging back to the car at Clinton. Another warm day (yesterday hit 77 and today was about the same).

orienteering 35:00 [3]
ahr:155 12c

An O' practice at Clinton. Today's training was almost exactly the same as yesterday. Today I felt a whole lot better. Still, I'm not normal. When I finished 35 minutes of O' today, I guessed my avg. h.r. would be about 145. It was 155. Running felt much better today.

Saturday Mar 15, 2003 #

running 25:00 [2]

Warming up and jogging back to the car.

orienteering 35:00 [2]
ahr:155 14c

Did a control picking course at Landahl. I went slow and easy. At the end, I checked my avg. h.r. and saw 155 -- at the pace I was going it'd usually be more like 135. So, I'm not yet healthy. I'll take a nap and do another easy run (if I feel decent) tomorrow. Landahl was packed with mountain bikers for some sort of event. Landahl is one of the parks that was hit hard by the ice storm a bit over a year ago. Some of the forest is seriously crappy.

cycling 30:00 [1]

I felt pretty good today. I took it easy though -- 30 minutes on the trainer. I taped the Paris-Nice TV coverage. Bike races are perfect material for trainer riding.

Assuming I feel decent tomorrow, I'll do some easy O' sessions this weekend.

Wednesday Mar 12, 2003 #

Note

My cold is so-so. I called off the planned weekend of training in St Louis. If I feel ok, I'll do something around here (easy) on the weekend.

Sunday Mar 9, 2003 #

orienteering 55:00 [4]
ahr:169 12c

PTOC event at Weston Bend. I felt pretty crappy. I've got a light cold. I missed at the first control (the map is a bit fuzzy in the area and the control might be hung wrong). After that, I ran cleanly but slowly. Despite feeling crappy, the O' was fun. After the race, Shifman announced that Weston Bend would be the site for December's Possum Trot.

Saturday Mar 8, 2003 #

running 1:30:00 [2]
ahr:139

Snorkel, Mary and I went to Kill Creek. We ran around - mostly on trails - carrying the map and paying attention to it most of the time (actually, Mary ran on her own and did a course, I think). After the run we ate fish tacos at Baja Fresh.

Thursday Mar 6, 2003 #

running 35:00 [2]

Jogging around at SMP before and after some O' practice.

orienteering 25:00 [4]
ahr:160 19c

I ran a control picking course at SMP. I'd set a course for an OK night practice a few weeks ago. I couldn't run the course then, so I ran it today after work. I ran without my lamp and stopped when it got too dark to easily read the map.

Tuesday Mar 4, 2003 #

running 1:20:00 [2]

Jogged around and did about ten minutes at an honest effort (70/20). Yesterday was warm. Today was not. At lunch it was calm and about 40. Then the temp dropped and it started raining. We got a bit of freezing rain before the sleet started. When I ran it was about 20, with heavy sleet and a 20 mph wind from the north. I didn't see anyone else out.

Monday Mar 3, 2003 #

running 20:00 [2]

A bit of easy jogging. It was warm today -- mid 50s. The forecast calls for freezing rain tomorrow.

Sunday Mar 2, 2003 #

orienteering 40:00 [2]

Jogging around before and after the O' practice at Rockcrusher.

orienteering 50:00 [4]
ahr:159 18c

Gene designed a course at Rockcrusher. The course was fun and fairly tough. I felt a bit off. I haven't done much technique the last few weeks and it showed.

Saturday Mar 1, 2003 #

Note

I'm feeling sort of terrible. I'll take the day off and take a couple of naps.
