cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy cycling. For those of you following the Paseo Bridge saga, you'll be glad to know that the structural repairs have been made and MDOT plans to open the bridge on Sunday.

cycling 30:00 [1]

An easy night -- spent some time pedalling on the trainer.

Wednesday Jan 29, 2003 #

running 15:00 [2]

Jogged around to warm up.

Night O' practice at SMP. Mary set the course, Nadim, Gene and I ran it. Snorkel (who has been working like a meth-pumped long haul trucker) didn't. But, I gave him the map and he'll pick up the controls. The course was fun. I slowed down a bit in the middle part of the course when I got into an area that was thick and hesitated on some of the trails.

Nadim and I shuffled around the roads and bike paths at SMP (we even explored a bit of the test loop). We carried the map and had headlamps, but didn't do much map reading. When we finished, there was a sketchy character in the parking lot...Snorkel!

Monday Jan 27, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

A bit of time on the trainer.

Sunday Jan 26, 2003 #

running 3:00:00 [1]
ahr:130

Ran at Rockcrusher. The first two ours I was with Gene. Then I did a bit on my own. We carried the map, but didn't do much map reading. We ran around the Adams Campus area, a place I'd never explored before. We went to the old graveyard, which is full of Swedes. It was cold today (12 at the start and 18 at the end) and a steady north wind made it unpleasant to be in the open. We stayed in the forest to avoid the wind.

orienteering 54:00 [5] 7.8 km (6:55 / km)
ahr:168 17c

PTOC red course at Longview. It was fun and I managed to orienteer reasonably well. A few times I ran a bit faster than I should have through some rough stuff (including when I ran face first into an osage orange tree).

running 35:00 [2]

After the red course, I jogged around the orange course. About half way through I got tired (and hungry).

cycling 30:00 [1]

Riding the trainer in the basement was a good way to relax after a long work week (even though it was only four days) and dealing with the strange traffic on the way home. The Paseo Bridge is closed and folks who usually take the Paseo are driving all over the place trying to figure out how to get home. It is enough to drive you crazy.

Thursday Jan 23, 2003 #

running 50:00 [2]

Cold out there (3 F when I ran and -8 F when I went to work this morning). I bundled up and shuffled around in the snow.

Wednesday Jan 22, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Another very easy day -- some time on the trainer. I warmed up for it by shovelling snow. Looks like the snow will make tomorrow's commute a real mess (roads will be slick and the Paseo Bridge is probably going to be closed...yuck).

Tuesday Jan 21, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some cycling on the trainer in the basement. My legs felt quite good.

Monday Jan 20, 2003 #

running 2:40:00 [2]
ahr:135

I ran around at Kill Creek (carrying the map but not reading it very much). There's still a bit of snow left on the trails and in the woods, so it was slippery here and there. I planned to run until (a) I got tired or (b) I'd been out three hours. I went with (a) when my legs ran out of gas at about 2:20...it took about 20 minutes to get back to the car.

orienteering 1:04:06 [5] 7.07 km (9:04 / km)
ahr:168 14c

Second day was much easier. The area wasn't nearly as hilly and we had more chances to run trails. I had a reasonable run - lost some time on a route that looks ok but involved running on a rocky, up-and-down trail that paralleled the river. Ross got me by a bit, but not enough. I beat him over two days by about 40 seconds.

orienteering 1:35:27 [5] 11.08 km (8:37 / km) +610m 6:45 / km
ahr:169 20c

First day at the Georgia meet. The course was tougher than I'd expected. The woods were nice, but lots of climb made it tough. I had 610 meters of climb on my route. I won with Ross Burnett a couple of minutes back. My legs were tired afterwards.

Friday Jan 17, 2003 #

Note

I woke up this morning expecting to feel sore from shovelling snow yesterday. I didn't. I wonder why.

Note

Walked around the model event map in Georgia -- definetly worthwhile.

Thursday Jan 16, 2003 #

running 40:00 [2]

I shuffled around the neighborhood in the snow. It was getting a bit cold and windy. I'd have done a longer run, but I need to do some laundry and pack for tomorrow's trip to Georgia for the A-meet.

Tuesday Jan 14, 2003 #

running 45:00 [2]

Snorkel called me at work this morning and wanted to do a night hill run at Wyandotte. I didn't feel up to that. Instead, I shuffled around the neighborhood a bit.

cycling 25:00 [1]

I also spent a few minutes on the trainer watching a tape of the KU-Nebraska game.

Monday Jan 13, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

My legs felt a bit tired during the day (sitting at my desk at work doesn't seem very good). They felt fine on the trainer.

Sunday Jan 12, 2003 #

running 3:00:00 [2]
ahr:137

I went back to Kill Creek for a long/easy run. I began by re-running the red course (but taking the controls in reverse order....7 to 6 to 5 and so on). Then I ran the green course. Then after a bit of a trail run, I ran most of the orange course. I bumped into a few controls that hadn't yet been taken in. I wasn't sure if it was best to take them in or leave them. I decided to take them. I hope that turns out to be ok.

orienteering 50:00 [5]
ahr:170 13c

PTOC meet at Kill Creek. The course was fun -- lots of running. I ran 49:57. Snorkel was 2nd at 53:??.

running 15:00 [2]

I jogged around the white course to keep warm. After I finished the red, I put on a jacket, but got chilled chatting with Eric and Shifman. I figured a bit of a jog would warm me back up.

Friday Jan 10, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I rode the trainer. Edge NFL Matchup was on ESPN2. I'm not a huge football fan, but I like the show. It is a good way to kill time while on a trainer.

This was the last bit of my really light week. Tomorrow, I need to get back to more serious training.

Thursday Jan 9, 2003 #

running 30:00 [2]

Snorkel and I shuffled around the Parkville nature area trails in the dark (with headlamps).

Wednesday Jan 8, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

Some easy cycling on the trainer. My legs feel good. I'll do some easy running tomorrow and something Friday (or just another day off), then back to normal training on the weekend.

Tuesday Jan 7, 2003 #

running 40:00 [2]

I met Snorkel and Mary at the hill at Wyandotte after work. Snorkel and I jogged up the big hill 4 times. I spent some time chatting with the park police who were suspicious of our activity. They don't get it -- night orienteering is not a crime!

Sunday Jan 5, 2003 #

running 50:00 [2]

Jogging around at SMP.

orienteering 15:00 [4]
ahr:158 9c

I did 3 x about 1 km short O' courses at SMP. My legs felt pretty good, but I don't think I was moving very well.

Saturday Jan 4, 2003 #

running 55:00 [2]

Jogging around at Clinton with Gene.

orienteering 45:00 [4]
14c

Gene and I did some O' intervals at Clinton. I'd give him a minute lead and then we'd meet in two controls. Then Gene would give me a minute lead and we'd meet after two controls. It worked well -- kept both of us pushing hard. My legs felt mostly ok, but I struggled on every uphill (and fighting the stiff headwind crossing a couple of fields). It was really warm (maybe 60?). Two days ago I was running in several inches of snow.

Friday Jan 3, 2003 #

cycling 30:00 [1]

I spent some time on the trainer. My legs felt a bit worn today (especially in the morning and after sitting at my desk for a while). Cycling felt good and by the evening my legs felt good. We'll see how O' training goes tomorrow.

Thursday Jan 2, 2003 #

orienteering 3:15:00 [3]
ahr:147 23c

I took a day off work and decided to rerun the Possum Trot (not skipping any controls). It was bone dry in KC, but Knob Noster was covered by a few inches of snow (check out the photo. The snow slowed me down (and made me work harder than I'd planned). But, running in the snow was a lot of fun. I was quite tired (and hungry) the last 30 minutes.

I drew a line O' course at Weston Bend and jogged around it. I took it pretty easy, especially on the hills.

cycling 30:00 [1]

When we got home from Weston Bend, I hopped on the trainer for a few minutes (watching college football -- not as good as basketball, but better than Seinfeld re-runs).
