running 20:00 [2]

Shuffled around a bit. I went by the high school and saw a "chain reaction." The field behind the school is full of grasshoppers. As I got near one grasshopper jumped. When that grasshopper landed, it made a couple more jump. When they landed, even more jumped. In seconds, the field was a cloud of grasshoppers heading away (almost like ripples in a pond). It was pretty cool.

running 20:00 [2]

I didn't do much of a run tonight. I had a high-stress day at work. Then, in the afternoon my co-worker/friend Nancy's husband died. It was not a good day. I went out and shuffled around, but never got my mind on running. I turned around after just 11 minutes and jogged home.

running 1:20:00 [2]

Ran around at Wyandotte. I threw in ten minutes at an honest effort. My legs did not feel very good. I saw a strange character running up and down the hill by the dam -- at least he wasn't wearing a duct tape hat.

running 1:05:00 [2]

Mary and I got up relatively early to get in a run at Weston Bend before it got too hot. It was mid/upper 80s....

running 25:00 [5]

...6 x the hill at Weston Bend. My times were: 4:33 (faster than I intended), 4:45, 4:51, 4:53, 4:56 and 4:55. I felt much better than last week (similar temps).

cycling 45:00 [1]

The latest Sports Illustrated showed up in my mail box. I flipped through and read bits of an article about an NFL player who died last year from heat stroke. It was 100+ here in KC today. I decided an easy bike ride made more sense than a run. I'll try to get up early on the weekend. Mostly I'm just biding my time, waiting for some better weather. I'll do some easy stuff until the heat breaks.

Note

I didn't train today, but I did spend ten minutes on the NT (enough to break a sweat) and then did some stretching. I planned a day off -- no excercise at all. But, work was stressful and a bit of something physical was a good stress reliever.

running 1:10:00 [2]

I hadn't been to Wyandotte for a while, so I went there this morning. I jogged around on the roads, including...

running 20:00 [5]

2 x 10 minutes at an honest effort. Each honest effort included a decent climb (not enough that Mook would even consider it a climb, but for the KC area a decent hill). My legs felt tired by the end.

running 1:00:00 [2]

Ran at Weston Bend. This time include jogging to and from the hill, plus easy jogging down the hill...

running 30:00 [5]

6 x the hill (from the bridge). Last weekend I did 5x between 4:39 and 4:44. Today I did 6x. But, I was going much slower. My times: 4:58, 4:53, 4:59, 5:11, 5:17 and 5:15. I think the difference was the weather. Last Saturday was unusually cool (close to 70 when I ran). Today was more normal (probably 80+ at the start and 90 at the finish).

Friday Jul 19, 2002 #

Note

My legs felt just a little bit stiff this morning. Today was an off day (mowing the lawn). I'll plan to get in a hilly day and a longish day this weekend. But, I'll stay flexible. This morning the weather forecast called for temps over 100 on the weekend. If it is that hot, there isn't much point in doing any more than some easy running or cycling.

Thursday Jul 18, 2002 #

running 35:00 [2]

I decided to do a short run -- minimize my time in the hot weather. I threw in 6 x 30 seconds up a short hill. I didn't go especially hard, but I expect my legs will probably be stiff tomorrow.

cycling 50:00 [1]

Easy ride on the Bunny Loop.

Tuesday Jul 16, 2002 #

running 45:00 [2]

Mean Gene, Snorkel and I ran from home. We went out on the bunny loop a bit past the high point along Amity. It was hot.

Sunday Jul 14, 2002 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Mary and I went to Weston Bend. I did an easy run for 80 minutes, then did ten at an honest effort.

running

Jogging around at Weston Bend.

running 20:00 [4]

At Weston Bend, I did some hills. 5x 4:39-4:44 up the big hill from the bridge over the creek. It felt ok.

cycling 55:00 [1]

I rolled around the bunny loop. I saw two strange things. First, I saw a burned out SUV. I'd seen the smoke and flames when I was driving home from Weston Bend. It was within 50 meters of the place I saw the duck a month or so ago. Second, I saw a stray dog on Amity. It was a strange looking dog -- short white hair and huge ears. The ears where way out of proportion to the rest of the dog.

running 20:00 [2]

Shuffled around a bit.

Thursday Jul 11, 2002 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

Thursday night's O' session was a mtb ride on the river trails in Lawrence. I didn't bring my mtb, so I just ran the trails. I threw in ten minutes at an honest effort. It felt very good (which typically means I wasn't going as fast as usual!). After the run/mtb ride, a few of us adjourned to Tropicana.

cycling 40:00 [1]

Some easy cycling on the bunny loop.

Note

My knee was a bit swollen this morning. At Harriman last week, I fell backwards, landing with my left leg extended straight in front of me. I guess I sprained the knee. It has been stiffer than normal the last few days. It was getting better. This morning it was worse. I usually run on grass. Yesterday I ran on sidewalks and roads. Maybe the hard surface caused some extra stress. I took it easy today and tomorrow will either ride my mtb or jog on the trails.

running 30:00 [2]

Another heat advisory and ozone warning. Another easy session. Magnus would have said, "Det var skönt ute."

Monday Jul 8, 2002 #

cycling 55:00 [1]

We've got a heat advisory and an ozone warning. It wasn't a good day for a run, so I just did an easy bike ride. Tomorrow should be another bad day. I'll see how it feels and might just do another easy ride.

Another O' session at Harriman. I ran around a bit and then did one of the WOC 93 short qualifying courses. The course was a lot of fun. I passed through the Beaver Pond Campground but didn't spot any of the O' campers. I also ran along the Lake Welch Beach and saw more fat people in swim suits than I ever wanted to.

I ran a control picking course at Harriman -- I don't remember the name of the map, but it was the map from the WOC relay. I also spent some time jogging around and reading the map. After about 40 minutes of running, I felt like I wasn't struggling too much with the rocky footing. I struggled a lot with the rocky downhills.

Note

Another day off from training. Despite the day off, I worked up a good sweat twice. First, at work we did some park inspecting. We're doing an audit of the condition of Kansas City's parks. The staff auditors have been out everyday inspecting parks. I go out one day a week and check their work. It'll be an interesting audit. Second, I mowed the lawn. Pushing the mower around is probably the equivalent of a light jog of 20 minutes or so.

Monday Jul 1, 2002 #

Note

I'll make this an easy week.
