Note

Pushed the mower around the yard. A day off felt good. Tomorrow is a travel day and then I'll get a good four days of O' practice at the TJOC.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

Hanging controls for this evening's O' practice. It was hot (again good practice for Texas).

orienteering 25:00 [2]

After the practice I jogged around and picked up the markers. The map is right next to the Sandstone Amphitheater. I'm not sure what tongiht's concert was, but it was definetly country music. Picking up the controls (at about 7 p.m.) was much cooler than putting out the controls.

Tuesday May 28, 2002 #

running 20:00 [2]

Shuffled around a bit. It is getting hot and humid, good pre-Texas training.

Monday May 27, 2002 #

running 1:30:00 [2]

Another run on the river trails. I did some bird watching (spotted an indigo bunting and a baltimore oriole). The far end of the trail was wet and muddy. I finished up with ten minutes at an honest effort.

cycling 55:00 [1]

I put in a couple of laps on the bunny loop. It is getting hot and humid (good preparation for next week's TJOC).

Sunday May 26, 2002 #

running 40:00 [2]

Mary and I went to Lawrence for dinner with my folks. On the way, we stopped for a run at the river trail. I threw in ten minutes at an honest effort.

Saturday May 25, 2002 #

running 1:05:00 [2]

I ran around at Bonner Park (a new park orienteering map). I checked possible control locations and made a few changes/corrections to the map.

Friday May 24, 2002 #

running 20:00 [2]

Just enough to break a sweat and get some fresh air. My legs felt pretty good (which was probably just because the weather -- nice and cool).

Thursday May 23, 2002 #

orienteering 50:00 [2]

Keith L. set up a memory course at SMP (at each control you got to look at a bit of map showing the next control). This is usually not the sort of training I'd expect to enjoy. But it was a lot of fun. The trails were slippery and I was wearing running shoes instead of O' shoes. 7 controls.

Wednesday May 22, 2002 #

running 20:00 [2]

I went out to shuffle around for a bit. My legs felt fine, but my knee still hurts a bit.

Tuesday May 21, 2002 #

cycling 55:00 [1]

I planned to go for a run. But, my feet and legs felt beat up and my knee hurt. I rolled around the bunny loop a few times.

Monday May 20, 2002 #

orienteering 1:03:00 [5]

Mt Penn A-meet red course. I had a decent run. I wasn't afraid of the forest. I was pretty satisfied with my run. Peter (who beat me by about a minute) checked splits and pointed out that he beat me on the downhill legs. Downhill running was probably my biggest weakness at Mt. Penn (on the second day, at least). 17 Controls.

Saturday May 18, 2002 #

orienteering 40:00 [5]

US Short Champs (m21) at Mount Penn. I didn't have a good day. The woods were rocky and the rocks were wet. I felt scared. I've never really felt scared to run in the woods before. While I was feeling scared, I didn't pay good attention to the map and boomed a couple of times. Maybe tomorrow will go better. On the good side, Mary won F35! 17 Controls.

Friday May 17, 2002 #

orienteering 20:00 [4]

Some O' practice at French Creek. French Creek is a great area -- a lot of fun. 5 Controls.

orienteering 40:00 [2]

Some easy jogging around -- reading the map -- at French Creek.

Wednesday May 15, 2002 #

Note

Travel home from the Nalga conference. Tomorrow I leave for the DVOA meet.

Sunday May 12, 2002 #

running 1:15:00 [2]

Another run in the woods near the Harrah's with a USGS map. Most of my time was exploring a single track mtb trail, but I also did some straight-up-the-mountain hiking/jogging.

Saturday May 11, 2002 #

orienteering 45:00 [4]

I ran a course at Spooner Lake. It felt pretty good and went much better than yesterday. 11 controls.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

I spent some time jogging to and from the start (carrying the map and looking at it a bit). I discovered a bunch of Junior ROTC kids out in the woods orienteering! It turned out they were from Carson City and were preparing for a high school event in Lake Tahoe the next weekend. They were using a USGS map. I found the organizers/leaders and showed them the O' map and told them how to get in touch with BAOC.

running 1:45:00 [2]

I ran from the hotel with a USGS map. I began by exploring some side streets trying to find a way to get up the mountain. Then I discovered a little path that went into a state park (and was right next to the Harrah's casino parking lot). I ran around a bit -- including heading up the tree cut beneath the ski lift. My pace was low, but it was still tough. By the end I was worn out and very hungry.

Friday May 10, 2002 #

orienteering 20:00 [5]

O' training at Spooner Lake. I ran way too hard for the altitude. After climbing 5+ lines over about 100 meters, I had to stop are recover. I decided to do the rest of the course at a much lower pace. 5 controls.

orienteering 40:00 [3]

After a few minutes to recover my breath, I continued at a more moderate pace. 9 contols.

orienteering 30:00 [4]

I did a short control picking course (about 2.5 km) at a decent effort. Why did it take so long? The climb was almost 250 meters. 11 controls.

orienteering 45:00 [3]

My last running session of the day (I went for a little hike after dinner). I ran/walked up to the high point on the map I had. As I climber higher, I got caught in snow! Not just the snow that was left on the ground but fresh new snow. It was pretty cools actually. From the high spot, I ran back to the car, enjoying an all-downhill run (took my 30+ to get to the high spot and 11 minutes to get back down...and the down was actually ten lines more than the climb). I read the map the entire time -- carefully reading all the details on the climb, then reading "rough" on the way down.

Note

I felt lousy all day. I left work at 2, came home and napped. I felt a bit better then. I suspect I was just worn out from not sleeping well. The storms (and especially the hail bouncing off the windows, roof and side of the house, kept me up last night). I didn't run. But, I did move some mulch.

Sunday May 5, 2002 #

running 1:55:00 [2]

Mean Gene and I ran on the river trail and levee in Lawrence. It was fun -- we kept a steady, easy pace. We saw a fox. That was kinda cool.

Saturday May 4, 2002 #

cycling 1:05:00 [1]

I went for 2+ loops on the Bunny. It was a perfect day for cycling -- almost no wind, clear sky and temp in the mid-60s.

orienteering 25:00 [2]

I hung out some markers for Mary at Wyandotte. The park was crowded with people today. The nice weather brought out crowds. As I was running on the road, I met an old El Camino lowrider! ST=348.

Friday May 3, 2002 #

Note

A co-worker is taking a new job. So, instead of training, a bunch of us went to a brew pub afterwork. Dinner was nachos and wings. I felt like Snorkel!

Thursday May 2, 2002 #

orienteering 30:00 [2]

Line O' at SMP. Mary set the course. It was a nice, easy practice. ST=343.

running 30:00 [2]

Jogged around with Snorkel. We went out to pick up the controls, but it turned out Fritz was picking them up as he went.

Wednesday May 1, 2002 #

running 20:00 [2]

I jogged around a bit in the mist. I took it quite easy. I wonder how my speed compared to the post-bike-crash Mook.
